Jesus, that opening paragraph reminds me how much Stereogum annoys me.

It's really bothering me that RTJ3 is being omitted from so many lists. I know it was technically a 2016 release (the digital release dropped on Christmas Day), but I don't recall the album appearing on any 2016 EOY lists, not even late entries like Pazz & Jop. I'm hoping that as more lists start accumulating we'll see it more often, but so far it's very disappointing.

Which is a real shame, since they have a few very good writers (Kelly Conaboy in particular is a fantastic music writer, such as here: https://www.stereogum.com/1972552/trl-i ... ing-board/)

Hope so too - always liked those guys, plus "Awaken My Love!" has been doing quite well on the 2017 lists so far from what I can tell.

Stereogum as some of the worst writing in all of music criticism. As much as people rag on Pitchfork's writing, Pitchfork on a bad day is on the same level as Stereogum on an average day.

I wasn't a fan of RTJ3 personally (RTJ2 was my jam though) but goddamn, it has had 88 on Metacritic, I'd expect it to do far better than it is now. Maybe it's just a matter of time. It did drop at a weird moment though when no one is really hyped for that music, right on Christmas, so maybe perhaps it flew under the radar when it came time to tally the votes?

January albums (I know RTJ were Christmas 2016 officially, but the physical release at least was January) always seem to suffer from being overlooked on end of year lists to some degree, unless they're a total phenomenon like Merriweather Post Pavilion. I think RTJ are another example of that.

I always saw it the opposite way, where if you release an album in January and play your cards right, you can stay in the conversation all year-long. Especially if you keep promoting the record after its release with TV performances, great music videos, remixes or festival appearances. Last year, sure, there was David Bowie's Blackstar that dominated the conversation that was clearly on another planet. But you also have a guy like Anderson.Paak who released Malibu in mid-January and managed to sneak in many year-end lists and to end in the top 20 here. The xx also don't seem to have this problem this year.

Maybe RTJ3 just did not have that same lasting impact? I don't know.
