I might need to listen back to that Mitski album but other than that, half of this top 10 is also in my top 10. Be the Cowboy seems to be raking a few first places, which honestly surprises me a little though I expected it to perform well.

There's a remarkable, compact perfection to Be the Cowboy that makes it resonate, I think - in this era of bloated, absurdly overlong releases, here's an album that packs 14 songs into 32 minutes (which makes repeated listens as easy as they are merited) without a single one feeling too short or unfinished (something that wasn't uniformly true, I don't think, of the 11-songs-in-31-minutes Puberty 2), and possessing a consistency of mood and thematic concerns across disparate styles. I think it'll end up in the EOY top ten when all is said and done.

I thought Puberty 2 was a lot better than Be the Cowboy.

Is this really an era of overlong/bloated album releases? In the 90s and even the early 2000s maybe, but I don't really see it these days as nobody is worried about filling a CD any more as nobody buys CDs. Even the big pop albums like Invasion of Privacy and Sweetener this year are well short of an hour.

These lists have kind of been all over the place, probably partially because there is no obvious choice for number 1 this year. Even if it wasn't the best year, it should make for a pretty interesting race for the top spots.

I could be wrong, but I believe the only albums to top more than one eligible list so far are Heaven and Earth, Joy as an Act of Resistance and Be the Cowboy.

I think some Albums this year suffer from being too long...I'm thinking of TY Segall or Kurt Vile.
But then again some are incredibly short - Daytona By Pusha T is only 21 minutes...can it even be considered an Album ??

I remember Trent Reznor saying that his latest project Bad Witch was meant as an EP at first but that he felt those are too often overlooked, especially on streaming websites. He meant to release three EPs in a row (last year's Add Violence was considered an EP and he probably felt it didn't get the recognition he expected). So really, in 2018, the distinctions between an EP, a mixtape and an album is really just about how you frame it because no matter what, it's just gonna end up as a playlist in Spotify; physical formats used to be the first indicator of the kind of content you would get.

The trend of long albums has been going on for a while with how streaming websites sometimes tend to reward albums with many tracks. That's how we get Drake' overlong and filler-full Scorpion, and even worst offenders like Migos and Rae Sremmurd's triple albums, etc. And before that, albums by Zayn, Kanye West, etc.

Overlong and filler-full is an apt description for every Drake album

Well, that this is a year with less long albums of course doesn't mean that there won't be long albums anymore. I myself was surprised how many mayor released stayed close to 30 minutes, or even went below. Especially hiphop, which in the 90's and 00's surprised if they didn't go over 60 minutes. Seems like they are making amends. That there are still Freedom's Goblins (for me actually a great example of how a long album can earn it's length), Aviaries (idem) or Kurt Vile albums (haven't heard his one yet), as well as artists who seem incapable of keeping it short (here's looking at you, Drake and Kamasi Washington).

Mitski, on the other hand, has delivered 5 very short albums in a row. That seems to be her style. Same goes for the songs, she keeps things small.
