Interesting to see which tracks are the ones that critics' lists latch onto from the "big albums" of the year. I often feel that a song's success on this list, if it's not a noted single like say, "This Is America", is too how much it stands out from the other tracks on an album. For example, I feel like Golden Hour won't have a single track that stands out - although I do anticipate that "Space Cowboy" will rise into the top 50 at some time.

Excited to see how this develops with time! I'm imagining that "This Is America" will maintain the top spot until the end. The rest of the top 10 I'd imagine will bounce up and down a little but should primarily stay high, and below about 25 I'd say anything can happen.

Wow, hella disappointed my SOTY, "M.A.H." by U.S. Girls, hasn't made it into the top 50 :(

Oh, i'm really happy to see Wide Awake getting mentions. It is one of only two songs to blow me away this year the first time I heard it (along with Nobody), and I was surprised to see it not listed as one of the three songs on the Megacritic chart. I was afraid I was gonna end up with another How Do You Sleep.

Guess the critic's choices are getting away from my own taste.. 2015's TPAB, 2016's Blackstar and Formation were amazing.. but I can't feel those feelings in 2017's DAMN. and HUMBLE, and This is America from this year...

Snail Mail's "Pristine" seems low at the moment.

Good to see Soccer Mommy in the top 10.

I don't really care for the Mitski song at number 6.

I knew that “This Is America” would be an easy number 1 (I actually called it in our 2018 songs thread a couple months ago), but I didn’t think it would be THIS dominate.

In other news, I really, really, really don’t like Cardi B, but even I’ll admit that “I Like It” is pretty good. Not “number 2 song of the year good”, but it’s still good.

They seem to have gone more with Heat Wave so far. The 3 tracks with Speaking Terms in the middle is possibly my favourite 3 track run of the year.

Loving the Soccer Mommy love too. Featured in my tracks of the year the last couple of years. EDIT: Inside Out made 75 last year, Skinned Knees just outside top 100 in 2016.

Though I disagree on Nobody.

Thank U Next and No Tears Left to Cry are vote splitting almost perfectly. I wonder how highly either one would rank if not for the other.

It's interesting that MGMT has two songs on here but neither one is the sublime She Works Out Too Much, which seems like it will be the AMF favorite.

OMG, just listened to ”Mo Bamba”. If that track is still in the top 100 when I’m done with this spreadsheet, then I’ll shut down AM.

That song was actually released as a single back in June 2017 (the album MUDBOY was not released until over a year later), so therefore it can't be in the top 100 songs of 2018. There, did I find the loophole????? :scared-shocked: :scared-shocked:

New statement:
If ”Mo Bamba” is still the highest 2017 song (that includes beating ”Mystery of Love”!) on this list when it’s complete, then I will shut down AM.

I really do wish I could understand trap rap more, but even though there are some artists (such as Travis Scott) where I can clearly recognize the talent involved, the entire genre is filled with stuff – the grating synth hi-hats, the constant ad-libs, the drunken, auto-tuned lead vocals – that makes me internally groan every time.

Trap is alright with me. Obviously I don't love it like I do 80s/90s hip hop but I like some elements about it. It's catchy as hell but the one problem I have with it is listening to an entire album of it. That is too much for me. I have to take it in portions.

Also wishing I was fly on the wall while Henrik listened to Mo Bamba:

I had not yet heard of this song. You made me listen to it with your comment. If you ever put me onto something like this again I'll make sure AM gets shut down somehow.

On a serious note, I know it is not done to say that a song is objectively bad, but ever an acclaimed song is then Mo Bamba is it. There no sense of musical ability in those vocals.

On a less serious, but still foreboding note, everybody likes to make a joke out of trap rap as the musical sin of our times, but people talked about synth pop in the eighties the same way and now that has become a standard. When today's kids grow up, trap music of the 2010's will be re-evaluated as the most magical thing that has ever happened. I fear it is inevitable (as much as I still fear a lot of 80's synth pop). Consider yourself warned.

The thing is that trap rap actually has a great potential to click with me. I love music with a dark atmosphere and heavy beats. The whole genre has a massive attitude problem though, in my humble opinion.

If Acclaimed Music can survive with "How You Remind Me" on the list, I think we can deal with this "Mo Bamba" song.

In a way, trap reminds me of crunk, a style of rap that was extremely popular in the mid 2000s (say, 2003 to 2007).

Both are genres of rap that reached extreme levels of popularity in the US, both feature “aggressive” instrumentals and vocals, both place very little emphasis on lyrics or technical rapping ability, both feature extremely simple, repetitive beats, and so on.

The main difference here is that the critics in 2007 never had the gall to laud something like “Crank That” or “Party Like a Rockstar” like they do now with trap.

The synth hi-hats and the constant ad-libs are my favorite parts...

I'm from Atlanta, the birthplace of trap and still its largest exporter, and I love it. It's something that I've been surrounded by for a very long time, from when my high school would play Waka Flocka Flame beats during the morning announcements, all the way to its modern "renaissance" of sorts, when it's now become THE dominant hip-hop form and one that receives critical attention. There's definitely a sense of regional pride in it, for me at least.

I also think it's very much contextual music. It is designed for a particular environment and doesn't work as well in say, a casual listen at home setting.

Which is a shame because "Party Like a Rockstar" was one of the best songs of its decade.

“I Like It” only has 58% of the acclaim that “This Is America” does, meaning Gambino’s song might just be one of the most dominant SOTYs in recent memory. A top 200 placement looks inevitable, and even as someone who really likes the song, that frankly seems ridiculous.

Especially since ”Redbone” is only #2899 and “Me and Your Mama” isn’t even in the top 10,000. :(

Thankfully we are near the end of the decade, which presumably will adjust things a bit.

Can't believe that "5 Dollars" is getting any acclaim at all - it's one of the least good songs on Chris. How on Earth is "Doesn't Matter" not lapping the field from that album?!

Thanks Henrik. #21 Lucy Dacus "Night Shift" came out end of 2017. Made my list last year, but will be higher this year.

I thought Doesn't Matter would be the most acclaimed track too--it's certainly the catchiest! Maybe it'll be an AMF favorite.

The biggest surprise for me so far is how poorly Maggie Rogers is fairing. I thought "Light On" would be top 50 for sure.

22 (31) Peggy Gou - It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)

I am becoming obsessed with this song. I had never heard of it a week ago and now it's showing up seemingly on every list.

Indeed, if I find half of these songs atrocious, Sheck Wes is far from being bad compared to some of the top 20 songs.

And as in previous years, worse, I not only know almost no songs, but I don't know many of these artists.

I can't believe how lacklustre the top 10 is. I made a playlist and not really impressed with any of them. Only one song in the top 10 uses a real drummer. They're mostly rnb or hiphop. I don't mind the Mitski and Travis Scott tracks. And maybe the Drake one. Political music bores the hell out of me so the number one track leaves me cold.

The divergence with No Tears Left to Cry over the last few updates has been really surprising. It's hard to think of a song that has benefited more from timing, with Thank U, Next being released right at the beginning of EOY list rollout, going immediately to #1 in the U.S., and staying there for the last several weeks.

I'm most surprised at Honey. That song just does not stand out to me at all from the others on the Robyn album. It's no Dancing on My Own, but it'll probably end up higher than that track.

When I listened through the initial top 50 Henrik posted, thank u, next instantly stood out to me as the best song, and I didn't realize it was a No. 1 hit until this post, or that it just came out. I do love No Tears Left to Cry too though. Those are definitely my two favorite songs of hers.

After the last two updates, the song that stands out the most is King Princess - 1950. Sifting through dozens of trap songs I can't connect with to get to that one was well worth it.

At first, my top 5 most played songs this year were all absent from the list. At least Fast Slow Disco is in there now (barely), but I'm disappointed these ones aren't even in the top 500.

Father John Misty - Please Don't Die
First Aid Kit - Fireworks
Janelle Monae - Americans
U.S. Girls - Pearly Gates

I'm surprised that Americans isn't getting any recognition. A catchy, politically charged anthem on one of the biggest albums of the year. I don't understand that one.

Sorry, there's only room for one politically charged song in lists and it's This is America!

Also Americans is one of the weaker tracks on Dirty Computer.

Songs not on the list that should be:

Audiobooks - Friends in the Bubble Bath
Caroline Rose - Jeannie Becomes a Mom (or any of a number of tracks from her album)

Totally agree about Honey. In fact the whole Robyn album seems a bit over-rated to me, but Honey doesn't stand out at all. What are all those music critics seeing in it?

Best album and best song.
