I've personally never been fond of St. Anger's production style. The choice to suppress completely the guitar solos is IMO the opposite of the essence of Metallica's music. It was a bizarre way to try to cater to the nu metal crowd. Then again, I'm not a fond of ...And Justice for All's production style either, which created a more interesting sound but is disrespectful of the rhythm section's work. To each their own I guess.
