Films of the Early 20th Century: 1948-49 (2020 edition)

Post by Petri »

I think it is time to continue our journey. Last time when we had the films from early decades the years were separated in ten parts. This time I think 12 parts would be nice. Then in the end we will have 180 + x wild card choices = about 200 finalists.

1. 1948-1949
2. 1946-1947
3. 1944-1945
4. 1942-1943
5. 1939-1941
6. 1936-1938
7. 1933-1935
8. 1930-1932
9. 1927-1929
10. 1924-1926
11. 1921-1923
12. 18xx-1920

If someone else wants to host this poll I'm very happy to step down but if not I can do it. In any case I will ask if there's anyone who could help me in releasing the final results by finding the direct links to the movie stills, quotes from the movies and comments by critics. I can do the calculations but I don't have time to get all that information that would make the roll out look better.

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the IMDb list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 180. The deadline is November 30. New rounds will be posted on the 15th and first day of each month.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

Thanks for starting this, Petri. The set-up looks good, although 39-41 is much stronger than 44-45, because of the weaker war years. If you need help with the quotes I can collect those again.

Thanks bonnielaurel. Helping with the quotes would be great (although if BleuPanda is releasing the final results I'm not sure if he wants to collect them all.)
Does anyone else think we should do 1943-45, 1941-42 and 1939-40 instead of 1944-45, 1942-43 and 1939-41?

Hey guys, not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm completely overwhelmed by your lists. I'm obviously not the biggest movie buff around here, but still the fact that a person has seen 30 or 40 movies from 1948 and 1949 is completely incredible to me, even more so for someone as young as Schüttelbirne, and automatically some questions pop up in my head and maybe someone is kind enough to answer them.

1. How many hours do you watch movies per day/per week?
2. How long have you been doing so?
3. Is it always enjoyable or does it sometimes feel like a work process?
4. How do you decide what to watch next? Is there some sort of system to it?

I'm fully aware that somebody somewhere might be just as ridiculed by my music listening habits, although I'm sure I'm also far from being the most compulsive music listener here. I hope nobody takes offence by this, I'm just genuinely curious :o

1. Currently I try to watch about five movies a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. The number of hours depends on the length of the movies. It used to be less, but I don't have a lot to do right now (for obvious reasons :( ).
2. For about nine years now. I started watching movies in English when I was 13 and I didn't understand a lot. A lot of my English abilities comes from autodidactic movie-watching.
3. I recently watched Duras's India Song and after about 70 minutes I thought about quitting, but then I continued through to the end. Some movies are just generally not enjoyable. That can be a good thing or a bad thing. When I know that I can't concentrate on a movie, I don't watch it because it would be unfair to the movie (if that makes sense).
4. The starting list from TSPDT is great for recommendations. Nobody will ever be able to watch all the 18.000 movies on there, but the vastness helps in finding movies that are not talked about often.

Thanks for answering, Schüttelbirne. I actively tried to watch more movies this year and I think 2020 may be the first year of my life where I'm averaging more than one movie per week. During the first lockdown I watched a movie almost every day, but I quickly veered away from that habit when things got more normal again. I admire your dedication through all these years. And yes, TSPDT is probably a great starting point when trying to get into movies.
