Films of the '60s: 1965

Post by Stephan »

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 15 films (or more, but only 15 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100. The deadline is May 31st.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the great (and awful) films released in 1965, from a variety of sources:
IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

Chimes At Midnight
The Golden Thread
Repulsion
La Bonheur
The Round-Up
A Charlie Brown Christmas

With a Ghatak and another Varda hopefully we finally get a film in that isn't by a male American, West European or Japanese director.

I count 4 of these so far.

Round-Up is '66, at least according to RYM

1. The Battle of Algiers
2. Chimes at Midnight
3. Fists in the Pocket
4. Pierrot le Fou
5. Doctor Zhivago

Fists in the Pocket (or Fist in His Pocket, or Fists in Pockets, or A Fistful of Pocket, or any of the myriad translations I've seen over the years) is one of the great near-forgotten films of the sixties (or indeed of all time). It's truly disturbing and unforgettable.

I have never seen Repulsion, and I really have no idea why.

Films101.com has it as 1965. That would seem to be an error, as IMDB confirms that the film premiered at Venice in '66. Oh, well.

Revised list:
1. Chimes at Midnight
2. Fists in the Pocket
3. Pierrot le Fou
4. Doctor Zhivago
5. The Sound of Music

I've been completely swamped with the new job the past weeks, so I haven't done any collating so far, and I've got a volunteering job tomorrow, it's my birthday Sunday, and Monday is completely booked as well. What that boils down to is that I'll be able to work on collating these votes Tuesday evening at the earliest.

Is there anyone who's up for taking over these polls from me? I've gotta get into a bit of a rhythm work-wise, right now I'm pretty beat when I get home and I don't have too much energy for this.

Edit: My votes:

1. For A Few Dollars More [30]
2. The Hill [20]
3. The Sound of Music [15]

OK I counted the results. There's a tie between 3 movies at #10. Stephan, what was the rule in this case? Tie-break is out of question I guess, because Greg is probably the only one who has seen Tokyo Olympiad and I don't think the rest are either in the list of most seen movies of the forumers.
Is there someone who doesn't think 1965 is the weakest year of the 60's in the movies?

1. Repulsion (Roman Polański) 272
2. Per qualche dollaro in più [For a Few Dollars More] (Sergio Leone) 223
3. Doctor Zhivago (David Lean) 199
4. Campanadas a medianoche [Chimes at Midnight] (Orson Welles) 160
5. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (Martin Ritt) 143
6. The Sound of Music (Robert Wise) 134
7. Pierrot le fou [Crazy Pete] (Jean-Luc Godard) 130
8. 赤ひげ [Red Beard] (Akira Kurosawa) 109
9. Lásky jedné plavovlásky [Loves of a Blonde] (Miloš Forman) 60
10. TIE BETWEEN THREE MOVIES. ALL GOT 50 points
Tokyo Olympiad (Kon Ichikawa) (one vote (Greg #1))
Alphaville, une Etrange aventure de Lemmy Caution (Jean-Luc Godard) (three votes Highest vote Petri at #4)
The Hill (Sidney Lumet) (two votes Highest vote Miguel at #3)

How about this rule for the tiebreaker?

If Greg or anyone else has seen all three films, he/they will decide which film is going to win.
If no one has seen all three films, then those who have seen two of them assign +1 and -1 points to the ones that they have seen.

Thanks for helping out Petri!

I've generally ruled that the film with the highest single vote wins, since that one is more likely to be an underrated gem. But it's not the most well thought out rule.
