Films of the '60s: 1968

Post by Petri »

It's time for 1968 poll!

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 15 films (or more, but only 15 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100. The deadline is August 31st.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the great (and awful) films released in 1965, from a variety of sources:
IMDb
RYM

When 2001 and Once Upon a TIme in the West (in advance two biggest favorites to win the whole decade poll) were almost everyone's #1 and #2, Rosemary's Baby was high in every list and some of the regular movie poll voters didn't participate - two movies with less than 50 points were qualified to final.

rank. title (director) - points / votes / #1 votes
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick) - 411 / 11 / 5
2. C'era una volta il West [Once Upon a Time in the West] (Sergio Leone) - 395 / 10 / 5
3. Rosemary's Baby (Roman Polanski) - 199 / 10 / 1
4. Planet of the Apes (Franklin J. Schaffner) - 121 / 6 / 0
5. The Producers (Mel Brooks) - 108 / 5 / 0
6. Night of the Living Dead (George A. Romero) - 81 / 6 / 0
7. Targets (Peter Bogdanovich) - 62 / 5 / 0
8. The Boston Strangler (Richard Fleischer) - 62 / 3 / 0
9. The Party (Blake Edwards) - 49 / 4 / 0
10. Romeo and Juliet (Franco Zeffirelli)- 40 / 1 / 0

Petri, when we changed to the steeper scale I think Stephan and I decided that a minimum of two votes would be required to go to the final. I'd say it's your call though as you run this now. Perhaps you don't want to take away the fun for bonnielaurel.

Yeah I remember too that we talked about “more than one vote” rule but I didn’t find the conversation anymore. I also thought that Tokyo Olympiad already qualified from 65 poll with only one vote (and that was even more problematic case with three movies with the same score, and especially because The Hill would have got more points if Stephan had voted for (or watched?) more movies. Actually Stephan or I didn’t announce the winner of tie-breaker that got zero votes).

I think I don’t want to steal the fun from bonnielaurel so let’s say one vote is enough (maybe we re-discuss about the rule before 50s polls). So Romeo & Juliet and Tokyo Olympiad will be in the final.

About the results in general: I thought Vargtimmen (Hour of the Wolf) would have easily gone to the final. Seemingly it’s hard to get to see the movie (I know it’s on YouTube but I want to watch movies with at least DVD quality if possible). For example libraries in Helsinki have over 20 different Ingmar Bergman films but not Vargtimmen (or any other of his films from 68 and 69).

With your votes Bullitt would had got 49 points (5 votes) which had been enough to the final. Unfortunately the results have been released so we don't see the legendary car chase scene with the same turning car in zillion different situations. :(
