Acclaimed TV Shows

Post by Seanywack »

Hi all! Since I have grown to love this site and TSPDT so much over the past few years, I have decided to try my hand at tabulating a list of the most acclaimed TV shows. I have collected a large number of lists from major publications with the help of Google and Metacritic, and I used a rudimentary scoring system to rank the shows: 100 points for #1, 99 for #2, and so on. In order to give lists different weight I simply assigned 100 points to All-Time lists, 50 points to genre lists, 40 to decade lists, and 10 to EOY lists. (For example, the #1 entry on a decade list would receive 40 points, while the #1 on an EOY list receives 10.)

Through this method I have painstakingly assembled a basic list, but I would like your help to fine tune it. I would greatly appreciate if someone could come up with a better, more accurate scoring system, and of course I will always welcome more lists. If there is interest, I'll post the titles of all the lists I have collected in this thread so you can see what I'm might be missing.

Oh, I'm actually helping a guy with a project exactly like this. Check general discussion to see the user Letmeintomyzone. He really wanted to do this too, and is trying to create the the site currently. I typed a document containing a whole bunch of TV lists, most of which you yourself probably found. I didn't include any EOY lists to him, though. I don't really want to tell him about this...

I contributed a list to letmeintomyzone's project through JimmyJazz the other day (see Jimmy's message above mine). I sent him a list from a book my little brother owns through a PM, I'll copy it here for you so you can see the list as well:

It's a book about TV series, "Petit éloge des séries télé" (Little eulogy to TV shows), written by Martin Winckler in 2012, a French writer and journalist now living in Québec.

The book ends with a list of 77 series that he recommends. He claims that he tried to limit himself to series available in DVD, claiming that some series he would have recommended (he names Cold Case, Cop Rock and Chicago Hope in his intro) are not available on this medium.

Wow, I can't believe I didn't see that thread! But if this guy is already working on his website, I'd be happy to help him and give up my own project. My goal is simply that a list of this kind gets put out there, regardless of who does it.

Actually, perhaps you can get in contact with Letmeintomyzone about this. He has been struggling to come up with a good formula for this project, although he has been apparently working very hard on a website for it. Maybe this can be a collaboratory project :)

I will type what lists I sent to him and see what overlap we have. You may have actually found some lists I wasn't aware of, and vice versa.

Thanks for the list Pierre!

JimmyJazz, I've already pm'ed Letmeintomyzone telling him of my interest and offering to send him lists. But I'd love to see your lists as well anyway!

Oops, looks like you beat me to it regarding my PM. Still, I discuss further details about his project in the PM I sent :)

I will type up a set of lists that I found and sent to him in a detailed word document a while ago. Still working on the games one, which is carrying over to several documents...
