Films of the 2000s: 2009 (2016 edition)

Post by Petri »

It's time for the 2009 movie poll.

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is 15th of June. If you haven't voted for your favorite movies of 2008 there's is still two weeks left to do it.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 2009:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

Very good year for animation. All five of the nominees in that Oscar category for this year were well worth my time.

Not sure I have seen a single non English spoken movie that year.

1) Adventureland
2) Zombieland
3) (500) Days of Summer
3.5) The first 5 minutes of Up
4) Whip It
5) District 9
6) Mary & Max
7) Moon
8) Sherlock Holmes
9) Black Dynamite
10) Up

While the worst movie I have seen from 2009 is clearly Dragon Ball Evolution, I'm really surprised people are backing up The Lovely Bones which while at times daring and with solid acting, is pretty dull and ugly, and reaches peak cliché when Song to the Siren kicks in.

Last day to vote.
There's a very tough combat of two last final top 150 spots (four movies within two points) so there's also a really big chance for a tiebreak if no one is voting anymore

The voting is closed. Again at some point the results seemed to differ quite a lot from results of the previous 2009 poll but in the end 11 out of 11 of the top 11 of the previous poll were in top 11 this time too  (in a differ order though). (Even (500) Days of Summer had it final spurt.)
Again animation movies did very well (three animations in top 5). I expected to see a bit higher Dogtooth (maybe not so many still hasn't seen it), Antichrist (Lars von Trier has done very well in these polls but maybe its too rough and people haven't dared to watch it (or just don't like it)) and Coraline (because good animation movies are doing so well this year and I guess many have seen this one). I also expected to see Wacthmen in top 50 (it was #54).

Last times winner A Serious Man was #8 this time (biggest drop for an earlier winner of its year I guess). A Single Man did better than last time though and tied with Up in the Air at #15 (hopefully everybody voted for the movie they were meant to vote. :) )
So before the final voting can start there's going to be a tie-break!

THE RESULTS
1. (2) Inglourious Basterds – Quentin Tarantino (USA / Germany), 302 points, 9 votes , 2 #1 votes
2. (5) Up (Pete Docter & Bob Peterson), 267 points, 12 votes , 0 #1 votes
3. (10) Mary and Max (Adam Elliot), 227 points, 9 votes , 1 #1 vote
4. (7) Das Weisse Band - Eine Deutsche Kindergeschichte (Michael Haneke), 182 points, 7 votes , 1 #1 vote
5. (11) Fantastic Mr. Fox (Wes Anderson), 176 points, 7 votes , 2 #1 votes
6. (4) District 9 (Neill Blomkamp), 171 points, 9 votes , 0 #1 votes
7. (8) Moon (Duncan Jones), 152 points, 8 votes , 0 #1 votes
8. (1) A Serious Man (Joel & Ethan Coen), 137 points, 8 votes , 0 #1 votes

Nice!

I wonder why Funny People isn't more liked, to me it's a great character-driven film about working your way up and reporcussions of fame that is hilarious often not really trying to be so. Mixes comedy and drama in a way Allen did in Manhattan or Crimes and Misdemeanors. And Sandler, though I can't stand most of his films, is fantastic in the role. This really should have been his last film!

I like the idea of this being a big countdown, starting at 50 with New Moon. For all that is addmitedly wrong with the film, the first 20 minutes would be a pretty great kick-off. And the soundtrack!
