Films of the 1990s: 1996 (2016 edition)

Post by Petri »

Time for 1996 movies.

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the IMDb list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is 30st of November. If you haven't voted for your favorite movies of 1995 there's is still two weeks left to do it.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 1996:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

I changed this to IMDb because it's so easy to change a release date on RYM (and some people change them into the (US) normal distribution release dates (and half of the Rotten Tomatoes release years are wrong so it's not a good source to check world release dates). N'oublie pas que tu vas mourir was in official selection/competition at both Cannes and Toronto FIlm Festivals in 1995 so it's a 1995 movie.
You also voted for Welcome to the Dollhouse on 1995 poll (which is correct). So everyone don't forget to vote for Welcome to the Dollhouse! Last round tt was a 1996 movie (because of RYM then) (#12 of its year) but this time it is a 1995 movie (RYM also says that nowadays. IMDb has always said that). I'm gonna edit my 1995 list...

The voting is closed.

The votes divided maybe more than ever before. 106 different movies got points. Top 12 movies got over 100 points but after that there was a huge gap and practically any movie with two quite high votes could have ended up into top 15 (#15 got 58 points when in 1995 poll it had 126 points and a movie with over 100 points didn't qualify). I gave 8 points to #15 (58 total) and 7 points to #16 (57 total) so it kind of feels like I decided which movie went to final. At least I didn't know it was a crucial decision when I choosed to put them in that order.
EDIT:Correction to the list. I haven't noticed that Gillingham had edited his list (Sercrets and Lies was his new #3). It means that Secrets and Lies is new #4 and Lone Star new #5 but more significant thing is that Shine gets two points less and misses the final (L'appartement beats it by one point). So I'm sorry for everyone who already celebrated for the final place of Shine and congratulate L'appartement and Miguel (whose #1 it was. It is also a great movie.
And if you edit your list please submit a new post about that (you can edit your original list but just make a note that you have done it at the bottom of the thread (and not in your original post). Thanks :)

1. (1.) Fargo (Joel Coen/Ethan Coen, USA), 466 points, 14 votes , 3 #1 votes
2. (2.) Breaking the Waves (Lars von Trier, Denmark), 400 points, 12 votes , 3 #1 votes
3. (4.) Trainspotting (Danny Boyle, UK), 335 points, 12 votes , 3 #1 votes
4. (3.) Secrets & Lies – Mike Leigh (UK / France), 232 points, 12 votes , 0 #1 votes

Edit. And if someone wonders what was the movie that was in top 10 last time but missed top 50 this time: it was The Rock by Michael Bay (#53 with 22 points and 3 votes) (and #12 of last round was Welcome to the Dollhouse which was #19 in the 1995 poll this time.)

Re: Films of the 1990s: 1996 (2016 edition)

Post by BleuPanda »

I was only 2 movies away from being caught up, but 1996 adds 8 movies I need to watch. Still, 95/105 is a good number, and I feel confident in my knowledge of the last three years. I'll hopefully reach my goal of watching all 150 films.

The sad thing is I'm really interested in Shine, Scream, and Crash; if I just watched them before the results, any of them would likely have made it in.
