Films of the 1990s: 1999 (2016 edition)

Post by Petri »

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is 15th of January. If you haven't voted for your favorite movies of 1998 there's is still two weeks left to do it.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 1999:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

Great year for movies and a strong contender for best year ever! Four films in my Top 100 and Three in the Top 20! Were it not for a certain film in hidden text below, there would be no debate.

1) Fight Club (#10)
2) The Iron Giant (#14)
3) Magnolia (#16)
4) The Straight Story (#68)
5) Galaxy Quest
6) Toy Story 2
7) The Sixth Sense
8) Being John Malkovich
9) The Green Mile
10) The Matrix
11) Mystery Men
12) Fantasia 2000
13) South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
14) The Mummy
15) Tarzan

Many of these films are about isolation in the midst of impending crisis (Malkovich, Fight Club, even The Matrix). There is also a very distinct style and color palette through the best films this year. Even American Beauty, which I don't like, has this down in spades.

Fight Club to me is more moving, more clever, and the one that most warranted me to watch again. To me, Fight Club IS the 1990s.

Toy Story 2 is the only film in the series to not win its year, though to me this is an indicator of the strength of the year overall and not an indictment of the film itself.

Solid year for animation also. This year sees the end of the Disney formula with Tarzan and Iron Giant being serious dramas rather than musicals. One film on this list (South Park) is even a blatant satire of those sorts of movies!

Petri, I took out 'The Emperor and the Assassin' since IMDb says it's a 1998 film. I moved up 'The Sixth Sense' a notch and added 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' at #20.
