It's time for the final vote!

Please rank the movies you've seen in the final 150 and submit your list by email to me at popelton (at) gmail (dot) com. Please don't send your list here in the forum.

You can find the excel file below.

Please send your copy of the same excel sheet back.

The deadline is March 1st.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks! :)

Is there a minimum for the number you vote on? I've seen a paltry 19 of these...

There was a same question in the Films of the 2010s thread and we have discussed this in other threads too. There isn't but I think the main problem is if you have seen only few films on the list the films at the bottom half of your list will suffer although you probably like them all. I may try an alternative formula in which everybody has same total score (4448,246749 points = the sum of sigma(2100/(xi+20)) if you have seen all the 150 movies on the list). I guess then even 20 movies would be enough to participate. There's still six weeks time to watch the movies in the final. For a movie buff it can mean even 50 new movies. :)
Petri wrote:
Nick wrote:I'd really like to participate, but I'm not sure if I've seen enough to contribute a worthwhile list. Is there a minimum number of films to have seen that's recommended for voting?
The formula (2100/(xi+20)) takes into account the movies you haven't seen and gives them a score of the average placement of your list (for example if you have seen 50 movies the ones you haven't seen will get the score that #25,5 (46,15 points) would get (#1 gets 100 points and #50 30 points) and if you have seen 85 movies the not seen ones get score of #43 (33,33 points and the last one #85 20 points). So basically the amount of movies you have seen won't affect that much to the movies you haven't seen but the less you have seen the more harm it will affect to the movies at the bottom of your list (because the difference for example between #49 and #50 is bigger than between #84 and #85).
There isn't a minimum number of films you have to see to participate but I think if you have seen less than 25 movies (that came from nowhere) (NOTE: Films of the 2010s was top 100 and 1990s is top 150) there's still a month to watch more.

I've seen 44 of the 150. I'll try and watch some more and make a list but no promises.

I've seen most of these. (Probably at least 100 of them, since the '90's was when I was studying to be a film critic.) The trouble is that I don't remember many of them well enough to make an informed list. :(

Down to 5 movies left! By the end, I'll have watched 63 films for this project...including the gigantic Heimat II which necessitated watching the also gigantic Heimat I. I feel accomplished in getting this completed.

I had the same problem. What I did was I went to Wikipedia which has summaries (sometimes very detailed ones) of movies to jog up my memory, read the critic's review and then watch via youtube, other streaming sites, or my own collection in my hard drive to re-watch in normal time or sped-up depending on my mood.

I have 9 movies left but probably will see only few of them before deadline (A Brighter Summer Day and Hal Hartley movies are the biggest misses (I have a feeling I don't get them anywhere soon.)) I haven't watched so many movies for this project (last round I did) but I must mention that last week I found and bought The Lovers of the Arctic Circle -VHS :o (with Finnish subtitles) Haven't watched it yet though but I actually have an old VCR. 8-)

Aw...I would heavily encourage you to get to A Brighter Summer Day if you get a chance! I just redid my top 500 films (https://letterboxd.com/foolfantastic/li ... 17/detail/) and it ended up at #13 all-time for me.

I'm down to one film! All I have left is A Simple Plan, which keeps slipping out of my fingers by being checked out by other people. If all else fails, it's streaming on amazon.

Would it be alright if I submit my list without comments first? I don't want to somehow forget after putting so much effort in watching everything...

Well, I got a copy of A Simple Plan last night and watched it, so I'm finished! Now to work on doing write-ups for every movie. I'm finished with the top 10; they're kind of long, but I figure I'll get to more basic commentary once I get outside of my favorites.

Great. Thanks in advance for writing comments. I really appreciate that.

Two weeks to vote everyone.
So far I've received lists from bootsy, BleuPanda and bonnielaurel. I'm on a vacation in Japan next two weeks so it's possible that I won't respond to your mail quickly.
I will be super busy at least till August so I would appreciate if someone wants to take care of 80s polls. Any volunteers? :)

Just came from Japan. What a great country and trip (watched four movies on the flight today btw). I'll extend the deadline to March 15 (but will open the 1980 thread tomorrow). Now I'm very tired so I will list (and reply by email to) people who have already voted tomorrow (you can update your list if you want).
So the new deadline is March 15.

So far I've received only seven ballots (from bootsy, BleuPanda, bonnielaurel, stone37, whuntva.Depeche Mode and Michel).
I hope the total amount of voters will be at least triple of this. Hopefully at least all who have taken part to year polls will participate

Dexter, Gillingham. Miguel, antonius, luney6, Greg, Midaso, fredp, Maschine_Man, Bruno and Charlie Driggs.

And also those who have been active in other threads at Films, movies, movies, motion pictures... -section:
babydoll, Rob, letmeintomyzone, Nick, StevieFan13, Nassim and many many more.

If you have seen movies from 90s you are more than welcome to participate :)

I've just handed over my list. I didn't vote in the rounds, so I shouldn't complain too hard, but I felt this list slanted so heavily towards American cinema that it contains a shocking amount of middle-of-the-road American films, while the rest of the world was left by the way-side. The nineties were perhaps the least exciting decade for film, but still I found many personal favorites missing while throw-aways like Quiz Show, The Fugitive, Sleepless in Seattle, Point Break, In the Name of the Father, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Good Will Hunting, Jerry Maguire and Clueless swindled their way into the final results. I saw 109 of the films and if I use the broad way of rating films here is how I would categorize my rankings:

Highly Recommended: 1-26
Recommended: 27-54
Worth a look: 55-102
Approach with caution: 103-108
Not recommended: 109

Almost half is just Worth a look or less. But I didn't vote earlier, so I shouldn't complain too hard.

There are many voters who have watched (or only enjoys) US (or at least movies with English dialogue) movies. Many times those "everybody has seen good but not great ones" have ended up pretty high on year lists but in the bottom quarter in the final results and vice versa many Asian films have done the opposite (for example Human Condition 3 was the #9 of its year from 1961 but in the final it was the highest from its year).

I sorted the movies by country (several European movies have many producing countries so I picked the main producing country).
In the final there are
93 movies from North America (Canada 2, USA 91(!!! :-o )
42 European movies (Austria 1, Belgium 3, Denmark 5, Finland 2, France 9, Germany 2, Hungary 1, Ireland 1, Italy 1, Poland* 1, Spain 5, UK 10 and Yugoslavia 1)**
* There are four movies by Krzysztof Kieslowski in the list but I counted movies of The Three Colors Trilogy as French films.
** Not a single movie from Sweden. Fucking Åmål was only one that was even close to qualify.
12 Asian movies (China 2, Hong Kong 3, Iran 2, Japan 4, Taiwan 1)
3 Oceanian movies ((Australia 1, New Zealand 2)
So not a single Latin American (not even Mexican) or African movie in the final.

Edit. And not a single Russian movie either.

Today is the last day to vote! So you can still watch movies today and add them to your list. You have at least 24 hours time to vote and if you need some extra hours let me know (more voters the better)

I have received lists from bootsy, BleuPanda, bonnielaurel, stone37, whuntva, Depeche Mode, Michel, Krurze, Rob, Dexter, antonius, Gillingham, Bruno, Rocky Raccoon, fredp, Maschine Man and Midaso. Some regulars haven't submitted their lists yet but I hope I get them today (+ I add my own list too of course.)

If someone wants to submit his/her list now it's the last minute to tell about it.
I will start to release the results later today.
