Films of the 1980s: 1980 (2017 edition)

Post by Petri »

I think it's time to open the 1980s poll.

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the IMDb list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is 15th of April. I will open the 1981 voting in about three weeks (after the final results of 1990s poll has been released).

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 1980:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

Some general questions and requests.

i) No one voluntered to host 1980s polls so I’m going to do that. Still it would be a big help if someone(s) would do following things (or at least a) or b) of them)
a) Get the URL (links) of pictures of the finalists (using Google picture search. If the link doesn’t end .jpg, .bnb etc. it probably won’t work)
b) Get short quotes from every movie that qualifies (IMDb is best site for this but of course you can search quotes via Google too)
c) Check the placement of the qualified movies in the last round. You can check it here
(it’s not a big job).
I would do all the calculations and present the results. If you want to do only one of those things it would be great help too (especially a. and b. which take more time).

ii) Should 150 movies qualify (15 per year) or should we diminish that to 100 movies?

iii) Is four weeks enough for a single year (a new poll opens every fortnight (two polls are running simultaniously)) or should we extend this to six weeks (a new poll opens every three week))?

I think 150 movies would be better (there are often much more interesting (and sometimes even better) movies at #11-#15 than in top 10.)
Six weeks would be better. The final round of 1990s has been taken more time than ever because it seems that people really need more time.

Collecting quotes is something I could do. If you still need quotes for the 1990s poll I could collect some too.

I would prefer to keep it at fifteen qualifiers a year. In the 90s poll two of my #1s finished 11th, so I would like to keep those in.

To me four weeks is enough, but we'll see what others say. I'll wait to post my list for 1980 because I'm going to watch "Berlin Alexanderplatz" this week. I think "Shogun" is another miniseries with a theatrical release in 1980.

I'd say stick to 150, but I'm wondering if we could shake this up a bit. Having a solid 15 for year (or any number, really) creates a problem of giving all years equal strength, which isn't necessarily true. I believe we saw that in the 90s poll (compare 1993 to 1996). Could we do an alternative? When I ran something like this on another forum, I had a bonus round at the end, where all works that placed in the 5 or so spots that didn't move on could be voted on again. So, we could do something like have the top 13 always move on, then everything that ranked in spots #14 to #20 would be combined into a bonus round (where people can only vote for those select films); from there, the top 20 make it to the final. We still have 150, but it gives a chance for movies in stacked years to place as well. The problem with this idea is that it would have to take place after the last year poll finishes, so it would extend the poll by another month. But, hey, we managed to cut the length in half by running simultaneous years, it wouldn't hurt to go a tiny bit longer if it means strong films don't get overlooked.

(Another option is doing what they do in the music polls)

I would prefer a month for time's sake; voting in the yearly polls really shouldn't be that time consuming, since everyone tends to vote for what they've already seen. To make up for that, I think having the final list submission period be longer works. That way, everyone knows what has qualified and therefore know what they should be watching if they intend to strengthen their knowledge before voting. Having the list submission period be two months would be good, especially since the current cycle makes it hard to keep up with what actually moves on. To me, these polls are all about this final period, with the yearly polls simply being the qualifying rounds that tell everyone what they should consider watching if they have time.

To summarize: 150 movies but consider changing how the lower ranks move on, four weeks for each year, but eight weeks for final list submissions.

7. Airplane!
8. Stir Crazy

11. Cheech & Chong's Next Movie

I will comment this more later. Sounds great (but also 70 semifinalists (+130 finalists) is a lot to watch).

1980:
1. Raging Bull
2. The Shining
3. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
4. The Elephant Man
5. Berlin Alexanderplatz

Another decade I'm not all that familiar with. I'm probably not going to go all-in like I did with the 90s poll, but I'll try to get to those I'm interested in. Luckily I've already seen at least 3 of the big mini-series this time.

RYM has it as a 1980 film. But IMDB has it as a 1981 film.
So it's 1981, as IMDB is the point of reference.
I'll adapt my list accordingly (and hope that I don't forget it for the 1981 list)

Yeah it's a 1981 movie because IMDb say so (although Wikipedia and RYM say it is a 1980 movie). If you forget to vote it next month I try to remind you (it's going to be very high on my list too).

OK what about top 12 goes straight to the final and every movie in top 20 that has at least 65 points will go to the semifinal (bonus round). Then top 30 of semifinalists make it to the final. 65 points would mean that at least two people likes the movie (and has seen it). I guess the biggest problem in the bonus round is that the most have seen only few of the movies (at the moment I've seen 12 of top 13 movies but nothing ranked in spots #14 to #20).

Another option I realized that is probably too late to implement now: we could simply give a free pass to the top 50 from the last time we did the decade poll, and then each year is finding the top 10 excluding those. So, in this situation for 1980...
Caddyshack
Berlin Alexanderplatz
The Empire Strikes Back
Raging Bull
The Shining
The Elephant Man
...all would automatically place. Thus, we would end up with 16 films from the year, with the poll finding the next 10 strongest. That way, years aren't treated as equals, but in a way that is immediately apparent. That would end up giving us a final 150, but where we know the contents of each year as soon as the poll closes. I think it would be a great solution to a lot of issues, and I believe would help switch things up due to its effect on point distribution. Because, ultimately, it feels kind of pointless to give my 50 points to Raging Bull, which is an easy entrant guaranteed to place high in the final list. The problem, of course, being that it would reduce the amount of 'eligible' movies people have seen...perhaps people could post their full lists including those that already place for the purpose of establishing their knowledge of the year, but only those that need points are counted.

1981 would just have Diva, Das Boot, and Raiders of the Lost Ark, so it would have 13 compared to 1980's 16.

I was really trying to catch up with this year.

I was going to see more films, but this is what I have.

1) Empire Strikes Back
2) Raging Bull
3) The Elephant Man
4) Mon Oncle Amerique
5) Blues Brothers
6) Atlantic City
7) Ordinary People

And...That's about it. If there's time left over, I may expand to a Top 10. But this is pretty much my list.

4)The Long Good Friday
5)Talking Heads (short film)
6)Bad Timing
7)Atlantic City

10)Melvin And Howard
11)The Shining
12)The Stunt Man
13)Used Cars
