Films of the '70s: Final 100

Post by Stephan »

It's that time again folks. Final 100, of the '70s!

In order to keep the results more of a surprise, I'm going to ask you to send your ballots by email to: stephan [at] neoptolemos [dot] com (replacing the [text] thingies by @ and . of course). I will send a reply to every list I receive within 48 hours, so if I do not reply please leave a message here or send me another email.

I've provided the top 100 in an Excel sheet, which should speak for itself, although please keep the #, Title, and Director columns intact.

The deadline is September 30th, but as always lists handed in shortly after the deadline will still be counted if they arrive before I finish up collating.

Some surprising entries (Interiors, Trafic, The Front Page) and omissions here (Blazing Saddles, Dirty Harry, Assault On Precinct 13, Three Days Of The Condor, High Plains Drifter), making overall a very interesting list, not without the necessary classics of course.

Unfortunately I don't think I will be able to vote since I have only seen 33 films, making me unable to catch up with the whole list unless I start watching 2 movies per day, something which currently cannot be done with the amount of time I have available. Anyway, I wish great results!

Barry, you don't need to worry about not having seen enough films, the formula takes care of that. Everyone will rank the films they've seen and the other films get the same score as the film in the middle of your ranked list. If this sounds too good for the unseen films, you should know that the scoring scale is skewed with a bigger difference in points between the highest ranked films, so that if a film has only been ranked by a few voters and no one has put it near the top of his list, it will end up at the bottom of the total list.

Then I guess this should be OK. Still, I have to discover some of the films in the list... hope I find some time.

I have a feeling the first non-Coppola film may end up being #4.

I should probably be able to see a few more of these before the end of the month. Just need to figure out how to prioritize my viewing.

I made a list of all the films I still have to see and divided them into categories of "must watch", "watch", and "maybe watch". Haven't made it very far into the "must watch" even, though.

I've seen 58 out of 100, the ones I think I'm going to get around to are the ones by directors I already like. Trafic is currently at my house from Netflix, Autum Sonata is next. I suppose Le Circle Rouge should be after that. Then I don't know.

These list are always a little bit disapointed because we lost sooooo gooood movies in the firsts polls (Papillon - Franklin J. Schaffner, Giù la Testa - Sergio Leone, Les Valseuses -Bertrand Blier, Vincent, François, Paul... et les autres - Claude Sautet, Le Vieux Fusil - Roberrt Enrico, etc)

Whatever, good job again for making this work. And it's always a pleasant thing to search new films in the lists.

The 14th first films are, for me, all chef-d'oeuvres !

EDIT : I sent the list to Stephan.

I've gotten 10 lists so far, and although the voting is officially closed I'll still accept lists until I find time to start working on the presentation. Barry, how about that list? :)

Sorry for delaying it Stephan, but I didn't have much time in my hands last month-however I'm going to work for the list this week and finish ASAP.

Edit: Due to increasing amount of work to be done regarding my profession, I'm unfortunately unable to put time on this project. I'm very sorry Stephan!

Hey Stephan, I'm in the middle of Autumn Sonata. Can I slide it in my ballot, and if so, can I just tell you what position?

I'm sorry it's taking so long guys, but just as I thought I had some time to start on the presentation of the results a project for my thesis came up in which I have to manually enter several variables for some 8000 video games. It's really tedious and afterwards I cannot find the courage to do more tedious work in doing the preparations for the presentation. I think I have about a week's work ahead of me, so I don't know if I'll be able to put up any results before then.

Eek, I can definitely empathize with that. I did a thesis where I wrote a program which tried to determine grammatical intent of a sentence. For this, I had to manually tag the part of speech for a few thousand words.
