Films of the 1980s: Top 150 movies of 1980s FINAL RESULTS

Post by Petri »

And again it's time for the results of

Top 150 movies of the 1980s by Acclaimed Music Forumers.

Before I start the countdown here's some things concerning the presentation, the voters and the formula.

Fans section: You are fan if the movie is in your top 30. If you have seen less than 60 movies you are fan of every movie in your top half.

Haters section: You are "hater" of the bottom 10 % of your movies (rounded up). So if you voted 80 movies you are hater of 8 movies, 81 movies hater of 9 movies etc. I know many don't (and some who really does) hate a single movie in this top 150 but haters section is often informative and funny.

I used the same calculation formula that I used in the 1990s film poll.
So in this formula the basics are the same (as before 1990s poll): a movie gets 2100/(i+20) where i is rank of the movie. The haven’t seen ones get a score that an average movie would had get (if you have seen 100 movies the not-seen ones get score that #50,5 would have gotten). But after that I weighted the sums so that everyone has same sum of points to share. That means more you have seen more your opinion weights (if someone had seen all 150 movies his/her coeffient would have been 1 that is maximum). In practice this means that the movies that were high on the lists of people who has seen less movies are a bit lower on the final list than before and vice versa. I think this is fare (+ if you have seen less movies more likely you have seen only movies you enjoy, so your bottom movies don’t suffer that much). I will add the original rank (right after new rank) too so you can check were the movie would have been if I had used the original formula.

I want to thank you all who voted. And especially I want to thank all who commented the movies!
Last but not least the super-very-special thanks to bonnielaurel who collected the movie quotes (all 150).

I actually haven't read the comments yet and haven't looked the results neither. So every group of five is going to be a surprise to me as well. (Of course I have checked that there shouldn't been errors etc etc. so I have seen some results by accident but I try to forget them.

I will release first #100-#26 and after that #150-#101 and finally top 25. I think it's more exciting if you don't know in the beginning which movies missed the top 100 (there are many surprises for sure).

Here are the 18 brave voters in alphabetical order.

acr0320 (voted for 118 movies)
andyd1010 (32)
antonius (97)
BleuPanda (104)
bonnielaurel (127)
bootsy (49)
Bruno (92)
Depeche Mode (45)
Dexter (136)
Gillingham (91)
Greg (130)
Michel (123)
Midaso (97)
Miguel (75)
Neil (87)
notbrianeno (37)
Petri (139)
whuntva (100)

If you notice any errors (you are (not) among the fans/haters when you should (not) be etc.) let me know right away.

Looks like there is a chance for an AM update (at least if closing the Error and rating changes threads have anything to do with that). Mean while and before the big update you can follow these results. 8-)

The bottom 15 contains a lot of movies bootsy loves but apparently many of the others put them in the bottom half. Everry movie between #137-#150 has at least 10 voters (more than a half of the total). The fans and haters section may not be in the ascending (descending) order (but all the fans and haters are there though).

Comment(s): The scenario of people locked in a room played in an interesting, topical way. Liked more than I was expecting (whuntva) At first glance the five pupils are stereotypes: the athlete, the basket case etc. They're recognizable by their clothes and their manner of speaking. However through dialogue they gradually turn out to have more depth and start to see what they have in common, like problems with grown-up's authority and peer pressure. (bonnielaurel)

There's a contrast between the modest lifestyle in Queens and the glorious radio building in Manhattan. The good thing about radio is that you needed imagination. In Joe's fantasy the Masked Avenger had an athletic body. In reality he looked like Wallace Shawn. In those days warnings about the dangerous influence of the radio. Perhaps my favorite thing here is the sudden shift in storylines, something people complain about when they don't love this film. Overall, it makes it's point clearly and loudly, but that element brings a more subtle message. (Depeche Mode)
There were two movies that everyone voted (had seen). Full Metal Jacket was other of them.

Comment(s): A movie that speaks to all ages and relatable in many ways. A myth about the film is the lack of narrative, but I disagree. There is setup with the Christmas wish, and a quest to get that gun. And the way it does it so subtly is genius. And yes, I do realize I ranked this higher than in the yearly poll. I guess it's a mood thing. (whuntva)

Haters: Greg #120/130[/br]
Comment(s): Perhaps a bit unfairly hated for beating Raging Bull, Ordinary People is still a good family drama. The central cast is a great dysfunctional family and the film editing allows the film to tell its story true to the title. (whuntva)

Comment(s): Truffaut uses the old device of the play within the play. The stage director feels frustrated over not being able to control everything. A great scene is when Depardieu gives the antisemitic critic what he deserves. Maurice Risch as the technician provides comic relief in this Occupation drama. (bonnielaurel)

Some comments:
The pace of the rollout is fine by me. I only have time to check the results in the evening and I go over the results in one viewing.
About the calculation formula: it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference which of the two you use? Maximum difference is 9 places up until now.
And it seems that there are quite a few new entries in the list
The only films I haven't heard about until now are "Der siebente Kontinent" and "A Christmas Story".

And it's "Mon Oncle D'Amérique". Faute de frappe.

Comment(s): A well-directed film that I feel trivializes a condition of which I have firsthand experience. (whuntva)

Dustin Hoffman has studied real life examples to prepare this role of autistic savant. The only implausible scene is when he can see the number of toothpicks in one glance. His brother also has a lack of social skills, but he evolves during his car ride. Abbott and Costello's baseball sketch will be remembered because of this. (bonnielaurel)

Klaus Maria Brandauer plays a man who's constantly acting, whether it's on or off stage. Hendrik Hoefgen is based on Gustaf Gründgens, an actor who believed he could stay in Germany in the 1930s without selling his soul. It's based on a novel by Klaus Mann, who believed that artists couldn't stay neutral in politically dire times. (bonnielaurel)

I just met a wonderful new man. He's fictional, but you can't have everything.

Haters: Neil #87/87, Depeche Mode #42/45[/br]
Comment(s): Woody Allen approaches a serious topic with humour. During the Great Depression people wanted to forget about harsh reality. Under financial strain they gave in to escapist fantasies. Jeff Daniels plays the double role of the idealistic film hero and the cynical career maker. The film within the film doesn't make sense, because soon no one is looking for that purple rose anymore. Dislike time travel stories. (Depeche Mode)

Great rollout, Petri! As usual I have only seen a few of these. I'm happy about Laputa! I'm thinking Raiders of the Lost Ark and My Neighbor Totoro are probably my favorites from this decade.

Thanks to BonnieLaurel too for these quotes.

I thiiiiink that was Temple of Doom. If so, that should have been the quote ;) I can't hate this movie. It is kind of dumb, but I love watching it with my family, especially my sister, who loves Short Round.

Oh wow, I forgot about Princess Bride. That just might beat Raiders for me. That movie is endlessly quotable.

Comment(s): You can blame Rupert Pupkin for being obsessed with fame, but you can also sympathize with him. What he really wants is to prove to his math teacher that he isn't a nobody after all. In his fantasy he's a celebrity, and he loses touch with reality. Robert De Niro is dressed like someone who's ready to climb the stage at any time. He and Jerry Lewis used improvisation. Scorsese shows some of the weirdos that can be found in New York.  (bonnielaurel)

I thiiiiink that was Temple of Doom. If so, that should have been the quote ;) I can't hate this movie. It is kind of dumb, but I love watching it with my family, especially my sister, who loves Short Round.
Kali Ma scene was the favorite (or at least the most memorable scene) when I watched Temple of Doom in secret with my friend when I was 8. :o 8-)
One thing that I've noticed when hosting theses polls that #150 (or earlier #100) gets often far less points than #149 (#99). The difference in points is usually so huge that there are such differences only in top 10 (which is less surprising because the movies at the top have much more points (and differencies in points are bigger between #1 and #2 than #99 and #100 in individual lists).
Temple of Doom was a good candidate to be the last (it ended #15 at yearly list, everybody has seen it (so many didn't vote for it in yearly poll although they have seen it, it's an action orientated hit in English...) But the movie got almost 20 points less than #149 Blues Brothers (the gap is actually bigger than between #147 Pee-wee's Big Adventure and #137 My Left Foot: The Story of Christy Brown.
And the same has happen almost every time (#150 vs. #149 Point Break (over 15 points), #150 Gladiator vs. #149 Casino Royale (over 30 poins!), #100 The Fighter vs. #99 Interstellar (almost 40 poins!). When usually the differencies in points between movies next to their rank are 1-2 points in the bottom third.

I'm actaully more surprised the low ranking of The Last Crusade (is it so much worse than The Raiders of Lost Ark?). Of course for example Back to the Future part II didn't even qualify.

Shirley MacLaine's character is called Aurora, like the Roman goddess of dawn. They both wake you up early in the morning. She's the type who has an opinion about everything and blurts it out everywhere. The characters are true to life. The difference between the open Southern temperament and the reserved North is shown. Without overusing close-ups or sentimental background music it leads to one of the most emotional climaxes. (bonnielaurel)

Comment(s): Almost a remake of Herzog's own Aguirre, Wrath of God, Fitzcarraldo tries to play God and fails. With Herzog's trademark of man's relationship to nature in full force here, the struggle is realized with every frame, creating an experience every bit as epic as Aguirre. (whuntva)

Comment(s): Gérard Depardieu plays the intellectual who grew up in town, full of idealist visions of man's return to nature. The confrontation between him and Yves Montand, with Daniel Auteuil as the naive go-between, is built up like a Greek drama. Depardieu speaks a clean, academic French, the locals have that fruity accent of the Provence. Trees, earth, water, blue skies and thunderstorm provide a lively background. (bonnielaurel)

Comment(s): The only concert film recommended as a film and not just a concert simulation. Demme's technique plus Byrne's eccentricity make it feel like a strange movie and not just a performance. Comment(s): A lot of images contain red, blue and white, the colours of the American flag. Inspired by Antonioni's "Blow-Up" it's about reconstructing the past with fragments of sound and vision. The suspense builds up towards an inspired ending. (bonnielaurel)

I agree. For me these two films are pretty much on par with each other. The action in Lost Ark is better, but the father-son dynamic was pretty cool, and I prefer the ending of The Last Crusade over the ending to Lost Ark.

In this group of we have third yearly #1 (which was also a #1 of a voter (third lowest)), three(!!) highest #7's of their years including Coen Bros debut (very (pleasantly) surprised it ended up this high on the list. On the other I wished and expected to see #21 higher on the list.

Comment(s): Stylized and over-the-top. Over violent, but noted sensationalism with a purpose. (whuntva)

Tony Montana comes from a house with Catholic prayer cards on the wall. After his rise from dish washer to big time criminal he uses status symbols like an expensive car, a huge bathtub and a beautiful wife. The language is rude, with Latin slang words like "yayo" for "cocaïne". Brian De Palma uses red for Tony's flamboyance and green for Michelle Pfeiffer as the cool Hitchcockian blonde. There's a match cut from the palm trees on the wall to real palm trees. Giorgio Moroder's synthesizer music evokes an eighties' atmosphere. (bonnielaurel)

I do like me some scenery chewing and machismo. (Depeche Mode)

Look at all these people, trying to stave of the inevitable decay of their bodies.
20. (20.) Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com ... 68_AL_.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Woody Allen[/br]
Country: USA[/br]
Points: 650,28[/br]
Year rank: #3 of 1986[/br]
Rank in last round: 36 (Up 16)[/br]
Votes: 12[/br]
Fans: Neil #2, bonnielaurel #8, acr0320 #8, Depeche Mode #10, Dexter #25[/br]
Haters: None[/br]
Comment(s): Five characters alternate each other as narrator: Hannah, her two sisters and her former and current husband. Their voice-overs give five different views on the same events. The hypochondriac is trying to give meaning to his life. Max von Sydow plays the most desperate character; an artist who's isolated from society.  (bonnielaurel)

Very good, but I tend to prefer films with a limited timeframe. Jumps in time slightly take me out of it here. (Depeche Mode)

I scream. You scream. We all scream. For ice cream.
19. (21.) Down by Law (1986)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]http://img.moviepostershop.com/down-by- ... 283140.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Jim Jarmusch[/br]

Comment(s): Beautiful film from a countercultural and offbeat director. Tom Waits is a fine musician but also a really good actor. The three leads work well off each other. (whuntva)
[/br]

Last time I was inside a woman was when I visited the Statue of Liberty.
18. (18.) Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://i.pinimg.com/736x/80/1e/94/801e ... movies.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Woody Allen[/br]
Country: USA[/br]

Rank in last round: 10 (Down 8)[/br]
Votes: 14[/br]
Fans: Depeche Mode #3, acr0320 #11, Dexter #14, bonnielaurel #16, Gillingham #17, Petri #21, BleuPanda #25, Michel #26[/br]
Haters: None[/br]
Comment(s): Woody Allen's best use of an ensemble cast--balancing out all those characters and giving them all memorable dialogue is no easy feat. (whuntva)

Woody Allen borrowed a question from Dostoyevsky: can you commit a crime without suffering from a bad conscience afterwards? This serious theme is alternated with comical scenes, witty one-liners and clever editing with stock footage. (bonnielaurel)

Woody Allen is very hit and miss for me and he does have a tendency to reiterate himself. However he has made a few excellent films in my book and this is one of them. Coincidentally, when he reiterated this film with Match Point(without comedy) it resulted in a film just as good, but it's not a point against the occasional lightness of this film, because there are still a lot of moral complexities to be found here. (Depeche Mode)
[/br]

Am I a good man? Or a bad man? That's all...
17. (17.) The Elephant Man (1980)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/or ... 8a62d8.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: David Lynch[/br]
Country: USA[/br]
Points: 691,85[/br]
Year rank: #2 of 1980[/br]
Rank in last round: 5 (Down 12)[/br]
Votes: 15[/br]
Fans: antonius #5, Michel #8, bonnielaurel #10, Petri #12, Miguel #20, BleuPanda #26, Dexter #29[/br]
Haters: None[/br]
Comment(s): Lynch at his most accessible and most heartfelt. The story is familiar, but succeeds in being presented in that strange way only Lynch could deliver. (whuntva)

In Victorian London the gap between rich and poor was growing, neighbourhoods were unsafe. The black-and-white creates a dingy atmosphere and makes the physical deformity more credible. John Hurt manages to gain sympathy for his character from behind a mask. A theme is the difference between ugliness in the literal and the figurative sense.  (bonnielaurel)
[/br]

Man is born crying. When he has cried enough, he dies.
16. (16.) 乱 [Ran] (1985)[/br]
[imgsize 250x360]https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com ... yjpyuL.jpg[/imgsize][/br]
Director: Akira Kurosawa[/br]
Country: Japan[/br]
Points: 692,06[/br]
Year rank: #4 of 1985[/br]
Rank in last round: 17 (Up 1)[/br]
Votes: 11[/br]
Fans: Dexter #8, Gillingham #9, acr0320 #10, Michel #19, BleuPanda #21, antonius #21, whuntva #26[/br]
Haters: None[/br]
Comment(s): In a bold transition, Kurasowa makes use of color symbolism effectively in this film. Every emotion the audience is supposed to feel is conveyed with a color onscreen. (whuntva)

Comment(s): Can be enjoyed either as a fantastic whole miniseries or as ten great standalone films. Kieslowski is all about sequencing and making films greater than the sum of their parts. And what better execution of both the whole and the parts than this miniseries, which plays to his strengths in a unique way. (whuntva)

Weird to rank this as one film, but I will. Problem is that that parts are very differing in quality. First two are good, then the third one(perhaps the most dull comandment) is amazing - I would bet a couple dollars Kubrick has seen it - similarities in mood/cinematography with Eyes Wide Shut are uncanny. Fourth one was a really annoying melodrama for me on the other hand, stories about 'realness' of parents never did anything for me, I suppose I'm lacking empathy in that department. Short film about Love hit me really hard on the other hand, actors were outstanding and the nocturnal, romantic mood was palpable. I found short film about killing a bit dull, but it's good. Oddly enough, seventh part I really enjoyed, situation was complex enough and I wasn't really sure where it was gonna go, I also liked the relaxed pacing. 8-10 I didn't care much for, but at least they were better than the fourth. Comment(s): Perhaps the one film where I most disagree with the consensus. I can see how some may be sucked into its atmosphere or Nicholson's performance, but for me it was lots of filler that wasn't scary. So as a horror film, it failed. (whuntva)

One of the greatest statements against becoming a workaholic. I know, there's a lot more there but that reading struck me as most relevant to my life. Of course, cinematography, editing, score, acting are impeccable, and I'm not the biggest Jack Nicholson fan out there. (Depeche Mode)

Although there were many big changes to results of last round the top 3 movies are the same (but are they in same order?)
#3 has nine fans (out of 12 voters) and one hater.

3. (4.) Der Himmel über Berlin [Wings of Desire] (1987)[/br]

Comment(s): A touching, beautiful film. The supernatural being in a physical existence is a great idea for a story, so the irony of the angel's story is in the end the story of the human experience. (whuntva)

Haters: andyd1010 #32/32[/br]
Comment(s): The film that almost singlehandedly kickstarted the cyberpunk genre in film. Its psychological aspects and attention to detail with worldbuilding succeed where so many other adaptations of Dick's work fail. It makes you feel like you are there in the environment with Deckard himself. (whuntva)
[/br]

Blade Runner kept its #1 position (like Mulholland Dr. and Pulp Ficiton). Actually Blade Runner took early lead and never looked back (Blue Velvet was in some point lower instead).
Thank you for all who paricipated. Special thanks to all who commented (and especially for whunva who commented all 100 movies he had seen) and very special thanks for bonnielaurel for the quotes.

I may release some statistics later.

Nice job Petri! Sorry to everyone for being pretty clueless about movies. I voted for the fewest films, I was by far the biggest fan of the film that finished last, and by far the biggest hater of the film that finished first, so clearly I'm not a film connoisseur haha. But I still enjoyed the poll, and I would like to check out more of these.

Thanks for the presentation, Petri. I would have preferred a different number one, but the people have spoken. The list in general is a good overview of many highlights of the 1980s.

Thanks and no need to apologize. Glad you participated. On the last round, Blade Runner got also one last spot vote (it was Henrik’s least favorite movie). When I saw Blade Runner first time it did not hit me hard (I was 13 or something like that).
During the years I have watched it three time (I wanted to watch it again though, usually I watch movies only ones). Every time I’ve liked it more and at third time it really blew my mind.
