Films of the '60s: 1960

Post by Stephan »

I'll start this up a little earlier than the end of the month, giving people some more time to watch films from 1960 during this busy period of the year, but for simplicity's sake we'll keep this running until the end of December. Beginning now will also allow for the final 100 poll to be done before the busy November-February period in 2013.

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100 round. The deadline is December 31st.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50 points
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
10. 9
...
20. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the great (and awful) films released in 1960, from a variety of sources:

I haven't seen that much movies from 60's. Although vast majority (from the whole decade) is good or even great I think it's fair to give a better chance for movies I haven't seen yet. So I give points only for top 10. This list is tentative (I'm pretty sure I will watch more movies from 1960 before dead line).

1. Rocco e i suoi fratelli (Rocco and His Brothers)
2. The Apartment
3. Psycho
4. Peeping Tom
5. 悪い奴ほどよく眠る [The Bad Sleep Well]
6. L'avventura [The Adventure]
7. Tirez sur le pianiste [Shoot the Piano Player]
8. Jungfrukällan [The Virgin Spring]
9. Les yeux sans visage [Eyes Without a Face]
10. Komisario Palmun erehdys [Inspector Palmu's Error]
11. Village of the Damned

The rest I've seen (no points I will comment La Dolce Vita and maybe some else later).
12. Дама с собачкой [The Lady with the Dog]
13. The Magnificent Seven
14. Spartacus
15. À bout de souffle [Breathless]
16. Le testament d'Orphée [The Testament of Orpheus]
17. La dolce vita

Edit. 1. Rocco e i suoi fratelli (Rocco and His Brothers)

1. Jungfrukällan (Ingmar Bergman)
2. Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock)
3. La Dolce Vita (Federico Fellini)
4. À Bout de Souffle (Jean-Luc Godard)
5. Spartacus (Stanley Kubrick)
6. Rocco e i Suoi Fratelli (Luchino Visconti)
7. Tirez sur le Pianiste (François Truffaut)
8. Inherit the Wind (Stanley Kramer) 15
9. The Apartment (Billy Wilder) 10
10. The Magnificent Seven (John Sturges) 5

Nice start for the 60s. A lot of really big directors in this year's list. I will give the last couple of films less point than they could have, for the same reason Petri doesn't include more than 10 films (and me neither).

If all lists coming in tend to be rather short (I don't expect a lot of 20s, if at all), I'd suggest that the point films high up the list get, shouldn't be so many. But that's just a suggestion.

1. L'aventura (Antonioni, Italy)
2. La Dolce Vita (Fellini, Italy)
3. The Cloud Capped Star (Ghatak, India)
4. Peeping Tom (Powell, UK)
5. The Virgin Spring (Bergman, Sweden)
6. Breathless (Godard, France)
Psycho (5 pts) (Hitchcock, US)

Right now Rocco and His Brothers has the distinction of 'Highest rated movie on They Shoot Pictures Don't They I have not seen', I want to try to see that before the deadline.

Psycho has to be one of the most overrated films of all time but still a good film. There's one interesting thing about it, and it's the reveal of the mother, the rest of the film is kind of tedious. I liked The Apartment the first time I saw it but on subsequent viewings I can't stand how preachy it is about sexual morals and how imbecilic the woman is written. "Ooh, I'd spell it out for you, but I don't know how to spell!" A completely helpless, brainless woman who needs a 'nice guy' to realize that she is not socially obligated to date a married man who treats her like plumbing. She thinks the only options available to her are 'Date a jerk' and 'Date a nice guy'. Third option: Don't date anybody until you find somebody attractive to you who is not a jerk? Wilder obviously has a low opinion of the intelligence of women, and feels morally superior to any man who has ever had sex without being married.

Hope people will try to see Cloud Capped Star so we can get some representation of countries that are neither the US, in Western Europe, nor Japan.

L'aventura is one of the first films I saw to intrigue me outside of a traditional linear narrative structure.

This is why I think the '00s is the best movie decade. I have to force myself to see older films through a non-feminist filter. The view on relationships and male/female roles sucked in the past*, but I don't think Wilder is to blame more than anyone else. In general, rom-coms are particularly troublesome though.

I have only seen The Apartment once, and it was a long time ago. Sounds like I should avoid seeing it again...

*They still suck, but it's getting better, at least in the movies - that I prefer.

I personally really enjoyed The Apartment, and although I see what you mean it didn't bother me too much. Not enough to ruin the film anyway. It'll likely top my list this year.

I'm very glad I saw Le Trou, spectacular film. We really need to get some more votes for this film!

Slide Rocco and His Brothers in at #6.

'Highest rated on TSPDT I've never seen' is now Shoah.

Might be a while before I see that one. So long...

The first results of the '60s are in, and with 11 voters we're still going strong. I think we have more foreign films than ever before this year; only two films are from Hollywood and just three are in English.

#. Title (Director) - Points/Votes/#1s
1. Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock) - 363/11/3
2. The Apartment (Billy Wilder) - 312/10/2
3. À bout de souffle [Breathless] (Jean-Luc Godard) - 252/9/2
4. La Dolce Vita (Federico Fellini) - 239/7/1
5. Peeping Tom (Michael Powell) - 209/8/0
6. Rocco e i suoi fratelli [Rocco and His Brothers] (Luchino Visconti) - 172/7/1
7. L'avventura [The Adventure] (Michelangelo Antonioni) - 153/7/1
8. Jungfrukällan [The Virgin Spring] (Ingmar Bergman) - 126/4/1
9. Tirez sur le pianiste [Shoot the Piano Player] (François Truffaut) - 121/6/0
10. Le Trou [The Hole] (Jacques Becker) - 121/5/0
