AMF All-Time Film Poll 2019 Edition - Results Thread

Post by schaefer.tk »

Hey guys,
because of a shit load of work the past two months it took me way longer to compile all the Data then expected.

But finally... here we go

32 Members had cast ballots with nearly 5000 Votes for more than 1770 Films.
This results in a very interesting collection of movies in my opinion.

I will publish the results starting with number 1001 up to the number one spot.
So we gonna have a AMF version of the '1001 Movies you must see before you die"

Enjoy!

I didn't expect 5 Tarantino in the top 100 ! I mean 2 were obviously going to be included, but I find his other movies overrated. Especially Kill Bill vol. 2, can't fathom that being in the top 100.

I've seen more of those top 100 movies than I expected, though I'll probably end up with about a 1/3 of them I have yet to see ; most of them I enjoyed, liked or loved, though as I said, not a big fan of Kill Bill vol.2, and I didn't understand Persona at all.
A movie I didn't expect to enjoy but really loved is Singin' in the Rain, it's so lovable, fun and energetic that it seems hard to dislike.
A bit surprised to see Wall-E as the highest ranked Pixar movie, the first half is pretty stunning but once they leave the planet I found it less charming (safe for that wonderful scene in outer space). I'd rank it somewhere near the middle of all the Pixar movie, though that's a pretty competitive crowd.

I would probably have included M in my list if I had seen it earlier !

some trivia
- When asked by friends how Kane's last words would be known when he died alone, Orson Welles reportedly stared for a long time before saying, "Don't you ever tell anyone of this."
- The original nitrate negatives are gone; they were lost in a fire during the 1970s.
- The audience that watches Kane make his speech is, in fact, a still photo. To give the illusion of movement, hundreds of holes were pricked in with a pin, and lights moved about behind it.

little imperfections
- During the picnic, Susan clearly tightens her face muscles and turns her head before Kane slaps her.
- When Susan Alexander Kane tells Kane that she's leaving him once and for all, Kane has a moustache. A second later as he watches her walk away, the moustache is gone.
- When Leland and Bernstein are inspecting Kane's art purchases, Leland moves a statue which wobbles too quickly for it to be made of a dense stone such as marble.

bad words
“The greatest film no one want to see,” is how I would dub it personally. As an interesting way to look at American filmmaking, this film is perfect. But, as a way to spend some time and enjoy a movie, this film is bottom of the barrel.

some trivia
- The doctor standing over Alex as he is being forced to watch violent films was a real doctor, ensuring that Malcolm McDowell's eyes didn't dry up.
- Before the rape scene was filmed, Adrienne Cori walked up to Malcolm McDowell and said, "Well, Malcolm, today you're going to find out I'm a real redhead".
- The final scene was done after 74 takes.

little imperfections
- When the rampaging Alex is performing "Singing In The Rain," leaning over Frank, his mouth is not moving.
- Just before Alex and Miss Weathers fight in the health farm, the room is full of cats. During the fight, the panning camera reveals that there are no cats in the room. The cats mysteriously reappear immediately after the battle.
- When riding in the sports car at very high speed, Georgie is not holding his hat, so it should fly off.

bad words
A very bad film—snide, barely competent, and overdrawn—that enjoys a perennial popularity, perhaps because its confused moral position appeals to the secret Nietzscheans within us. It's a movie that Leopold and Loeb would have loved, endorsing brutality in the name of nonconformism. At best, Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film suggests an Animal House with bogus intellectual trappings. But the trappings—the rationalizations and spurious arguments—are what make it genuinely irresponsible, genuinely abhorrent.

some trivia
- Martin Scorsese was reluctant to edit the climactic (and very bloody) shoot-out to avoid an X rating. However, he was amused by the changes ordered by the MPAA, because they made the final scene even more shocking than had originally been intended.
- The only camera direction that Paul Schrader wrote in the script was the overhead tracking shot after the bloody shoot-out.
- Steven Prince improvised the list of additional illegal things Easy Andy had for sale after Travis buys the gun.

little imperfections
- When Travis presses his neck wound with his hand after he is shot, his bald skin cap wrinkles. [confirmed by makeup artist Dick Smith]
- When Travis and Iris are having breakfast at the coffee shop, the parked cars seen through the window behind Travis, change between every shot.
- On a newspaper clipping at the end about Iris and her family, Pittsburgh is misspelled as "Pittsburg," without the "h."

bad words
Yet somehow it is all too heavy with easy sociologizing to be truly moving. The taxi driver's shift from lonely neurotic to killer is yawningly predictable—no more informative than a Sunday supplement piece on the mind of the assassin. - Mean Streets first showed the conflict between Scorsese's natural gift for human observation and his attraction to social and psychological statements. Unfortunately, social comment does not come easily to him, and the strain shows. It is a conflict he can resolve only in a violence that seems forced and—coming after so much dreariness—ridiculously pyrotechnical.

some trivia
- Humpfrey Bogart had to wear platform shoes to play alongside Ingrid Bergman and compensate for the height disparity.
- Rick's Cafe was one of the few original sets built for the film, the rest were all recycled from other Warner Brothers productions due to wartime restrictions on building supplies.
- Many of the actors who played the Nazis were in fact German Jews who had escaped from Nazi Germany.

little imperfections
- In the opening, Rick is at the back of his cafe, playing chess with himself. During a closeup of his hand, he is wearing a wedding ring. Rick is a bachelor.
- While chatting to Captain Renault outside the Café Américain, Rick lights a cigarette, then in the next shot, lights another.
- When Renault calls Strasser to tell of the upcoming events at the airport, Major Strasser is in the office of the "German Commission of Armistice" according to the sign on the door. The name should have been in German - or perhaps French, but not in English.

bad words
Hoo boy, what a stinker! You can tell a movie's going to be bad when it starts with that cheesy 1940s narrator laying it on really thick about The War, and all the movie can come up with for a visual to underscore the importance of it is ... footage of a classroom globe. Eh, we can't afford to show you the war. Just take our word for it, there's a war -- and it's happening on a planet that looks like this!

some trivia
- This movie is often credited or blamed for creating or popularizing the misconception that vertigo means a fear of heights. For the record, the proper name for that condition is "Acrophobia", whereas vertigo is "a sensation of whirling and loss of balance, associated particularly with looking down from a great height"
- Alfred Hitchcock reportedly spent a week filming a brief scene where Madeleine stares at a portrait in the Palace of the Legion of Honor just to get the lighting right.
- The opening title sequence designed by Saul Bass makes this the first movie to use computer graphics.

little imperfections
- In the opening rooftop chase the crook and the officer and Jimmy jump across from one rooftop to another. The distance is no more than 5 or 6 feet and yet when the officer falls and the shot shows him on the ground the buildings are a full alley width apart, at least double what the distance they supposedly jumped.
- Some of the road shots from inside cars show the car driving on the left hand side of the road. This suggests that some of the support work was done in the UK.
- When Scottie takes Madeleine out of the water, her shoe is off. When they have reached the pier, Madeleine has both shoes again.

bad words
Vertigo is technically brilliant... But the contrived and far-fetched plot, heavy-handed symbolism, and Hitchcock’s signature detachment-cum-contempt for his protagonists, make the whole affair rather bleak and alienating.

We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "fuck" on their airplanes because it's obscene!

some trivia
- Francis Ford Coppola shot nearly 200 hours of footage.
- Most of the dialogue was added in post-production. Extraneous noise, such as helicopters, left many scenes with unusable audio.
- Laurence Fishburne was 14 when production began in 1976. He lied about his age.

little imperfections
- The maximum gross weight of a Huey helicopter is 10,500 pounds. It would be impossible for such an aircraft to lift a Patrol Boat, Riverine (PBR) which weighs anywhere between 15,000 and 19,000 pounds.
- There are no waterways linking the Central Coast (where the only surfable beaches in South Vietnam are situated) with Cambodia.
- When Kilgore wants the tree-line bombed with napalm to the stone age, he asks for "Dove Four" and the pilots respond with "Dove One-Three", and "Dove Four" is never referred to again.

bad words
The finished film remains a mess of tangled, turgid continuity and florid, mock-operatic style -- at best a collection of production numbers and set pieces waiting in rain for a story capable of accumulating suspense and meaning.

some trivia
- Alfred Hitchcock was so pleased with the score written by Bernard Herrmann, that he doubled the composer's salary to $34,501.
- First American movie ever to show a toilet flushing on-screen.
- When the cast and crew began work on the first day, they had to raise their right hands and promise not to divulge one word of the story.

little imperfections
- When Marion starts getting wet in the shower, at first her hair is dry. She starts washing her arms then turns her head slightly but only enough to wet just a few hairs. Then all of a sudden almost all of her hair is soaking wet.
- The calendar belonging to the Chief of Police reads '17' on December 20th.
- When "Mother" exits her room and charges Arbogast, she slashes downward towards his chest. But the wound is on his face when he falls backward down the stairs.

bad words
Psycho is not a long film but it feels long. Perhaps because the director dawdles over technical effects; perhaps because it is difficult, if not impossible, to care about any of the characters.

some trivia
- The cat helt by Marlon Brando in the opening scene was a stray that Coppola found while on the lot at Paramount Pictures, and was not originally called for in the script.
- Whenever oranges appear in the film, they foreshadow death or a near death involving the Corleone family.
- The three-year-old child actor, Anthony Gounaris, responded best when his real name was used while shooting the film. That is why Michael's son's name is

Anthony.

little imperfections
- When Michael is at his father's funeral he says he will meet with the heads of the 5 families. But since he is the head of one of the families he should have said he would meet with the other 4 heads of the families. Moe Greene was not a family head.
- When an old man sings "A Luna Mezzo 'O Mare" during the wedding celebration, his dentures can be seen coming loose. He re-sets his teeth without missing a note.
- When Michael is arriving in Las Vegas, supposedly set in the very early 1950s, when he, Fredo, Tom and others are getting out of the car in the hotel driveway, two long-haired, bearded "hippie types" from the early '70s can be seen through the window in the lobby.

bad words
So with all due respect to Godfather lovers, AFI and the Oscars, I do not like this movie, I hate its message, and I think its infantile view of the criminal underworld mixed with its eager acceptance of the legitimacy of those ideas makes our world a more dangerous place.

some trivia
- At the beginning, the prehistorical African landscapes are just photographs, not actual clips.
- The entire centrifuge section of the Discovery spacecraft was constructed as a single set. It was designed to rotate for shots such as the sequence in which Frank went jogging so that the actor remained on the bottom.
- Stanley Kubrick cut 19 minutes from the film's original 158-minute running time after its New York premiere, mostly to speed up the pacing.

little imperfections
- Bowman inhales deeply before attempting to re-enter the ship from the pod. The author Arthur C. Clarke later noted that this is incorrect. Bowman should have exhaled, as the vacuum of space would have damaged his lungs had they been full of air.
- During the dawn of man, when the ape throws the bone in the air after defeating the rival group, the bone rotates counter clockwise as it goes up, but clockwise as it comes down.
- The sun in space is pure white - not orange or yellow. It's only the atmosphere of the earth that makes it appear orange / yellow.

bad words
A crackpot Looney Tune, pretentious, abysmally slow, amateurishly acted and, above all, wrong.

some trivia
- In the opening sequence with Honey Bunny and Pumpkin, Jules can be heard talking about quitting "the life", and Vincent can be seen entering the bathroom.
- Chronologically, the last scene in the movie is Butch and Fabienne riding away on a chopper. The first sound you can hear in the movie is of the same chopper's engine.
- The shot of Vincent plunging the syringe into Mia's chest was filmed by having John Travolta pull the needle out, then running the film backwards.

little imperfections
- When the fourth man in Brett's apartment fires at Jules and Vincent, the wheel on his revolver does not spin.
- Winston Wolf offers to give Jules and Vincent a ride in a two seat NSX that would have been occupied by him and Raquel.
- When Winston tells Jules and Vincent the route that they'll be taking from Jimmy's house in Toluca Lake to Monster Joe's in North Hollywood, he says they'll be going up Hollywood Way. Hollywood Way is to the east of both Toluca Lake and North Hollywood, it wouldn't make sense for them to go that way, especially if they want to spend as little time on the streets as possible.

bad words
"Reservoir Dogs" still looks like the great American film of the decade, but Quentin Tarantino's second film as writer-director shows him already deep in the territory of self-parody. There hasn't been such a disappointing follow-up since the team responsible for "My Beautiful Laundrette" delivered "Sammy and Rosie Get Laid".
