Films of the 1960s: The Results (2019 edition)

Post by The_Claw »

Welcome to the final part of the 1960s film poll, The Results! In total, 158 movies have been listed by 8 forum members. Their votes have resulted in a final ranking.

The 8 voters were:

Bonnielaurel (140)
Dexter (141)
Greg (136)
Michel (143)
Miguel (92)
Petri (140)
The_Claw (154)
whuntva (79)

To calculate the score for each film, I have used the same formula as in previous film polls, 2100/(i+20), where i is the rank of the movie on the ballot. If a voter hasn't seen or ranked a film, that film will receive the score for the average film on that person's ballot (for instance, if a person has ranked 50 films, the remaining films will receive the score for the rank of #25.5).

As always, I will also list the fans. You are considered a fan of the movie if you have ranked the movie in your top 30. If a film is not in anyone's top 30, then I will list the biggest fan of that film and the rank on that list.

Thanks to everybody who has participated in this poll! Even if you have only contributed for one time, your votes have made this list possible. I especially wish to thank BleuPanda for starting this poll and hosting the first rounds. It is unfortunate that you weren't able to complete it, but I hope that the issues that have caused you to withdraw will be resolved.

OK, on to the list!

The Great Escape is surprisingly low, although it's not one of my favourites either.

65. Don't Look Now... We're Being Shot At! (1966)

bonnielaurel: Louis de Funès and Bourvil are two comedians with perfect timing and facial expression. As often with comical duos there's a contrast between the two characters: De Funès plays a conductor with megalomania: Bourvil plays the simple working man. They have to work together to outsmart the Germans. It can still make me laugh.

bonnielaurel: Based on a play by Lillian Hellman this deals with a topic that had been taboo for a long time. Shirley MacLaine plays a woman who feels guilty for her sexual orientation. Audrey Hepburn and the children give good performances too. The small school feels more and more gloomy and isolated.

bonnielaurel: In his first colour film Fellini doesn't show objective reality, but the subjective experience of the main character, played by his wife G. Masina. Giulietta's deformed memories, fantasies and hallucinations provide some surrealistic images, e.g. the excentric Sandra Milo on a swing.

bonnielaurel: Catherine Deneuve plays a schizophrenic woman who moves back into complete isolation. It's psychological horror, with hallucinations of walls with ears. The jazz music with eruptions and the sound of a leaking tap, distant footsteps or a zooming insect reinforce the creepy atmosphere.

bonnielaurel: It's the romantic story of a love triangle against a historic background. The timeless nature is a contrast with the artificial ideas imposed by the regime. There's a match cut from ice flowers on the window to real flowers. Julie Christie's blue eyes are used effectively. The theme is played on a balalaika.

bonnielaurel: Evil doesn't come from some bad guy, but from those innocent looking feathered creatures around us. It's a revolution of nature against culture. Tippi Hedren acts surprisingly well for someone who was discovered in a commercial. A Trautonium was used for the lurid sound effects.

bonnielaurel: Flower power and satanism were both popular in the late sixties. Rosemary represents the first, but the people around her want to abuse the fragile but fertile woman for evil purposes. It's a modern horror story in an urban environment.

bonnielaurel: Swingin London is shown with its anti-war protests, mod culture, rock stars and super models. Even a photographer could be a star. He has to reconstruct reality by blowing up photos. The tennis match without a ball is surrealistic.

bonnielaurel: It's a funny relationship comedy, but it also deals with serious matters like suicide and alienation in a modern city. Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine are top comedians with a sad undertone. Billy Wilder used false perspective to make the office seem bigger. It shows how to use a tennis racket creatively.

bonnielaurel: Fellini uses memories, daydreams and Jungian psychology to delve into the personality of Guido. The Catholic Church is satirized. The music of Nino Rota underlines the comparison between a film set and a circus.

bonnielaurel: The whole idea is based on Carl Gustav Jung's theory of persona and shadow. Alma represents the persona, the mask for the outside world. Elisabet represents the shadow or the hidden side of the personality. To become a complete person these two have to be united.

bonnielaurel: This psychological thriller revolves around a major twist, after which the story continues from alternating points of view. The scene with the stuffed birds gives an insight into the motivation of the two main characters. The famous shower scene is a masterpiece of editing and also the beginning of the splash horror.

1. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

bonnielaurel: A famous match cut links a bone to a satellite, a primitive tool to a modern one. It show the evolution of intelligence and technology over the centuries. It's inspired by space exploration in the sixties, with the inclusion of psychedelic elements. Music of Strauss and Ligeti is connected to movement in space.

Thank you The_Claw! Great presentation. It was a pleasure to follow the countdown. The animated gifs were a great bonus.

Great results too.
The results differ quite a lot from last time which is good I guess (although last time the correlation between my list and the results were probably higher). Mainstream or would I say entertaining Hollywood movies did much better this time than before (actually better than anytime before in the AMF film polls). I mean movies that succeeded this time to name a few (Sound of Music #91 (2013 poll) -> #37, West Side Story (not in the final -> #27). Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia did also much better than last time. On the other hand movies by Buñuel (and Fellini) did better too.

Some big droppers Human Condition III (#21 (2013) -> #108), Winter Light #58 -> #152. Steve McQueen movies didn't do that well last time either (Cool Hand Luke and Great Escape in the bottom top 10 and Torn Curtain and Bullitt were not in the final).

Although 8½ and Persona in top 4 (and 2001 as predictable #1) are definitely something else than average Hollywood movie.
I guess the correlations between the voters were near zero for most of the voters.

Thanks for the work, TC. Although there weren't that many participants I think the result is a very good overview of the highlights of the decade, with a good balance between different genres and countries.
