Videogame EOD : your lists

Post by Nassim » Mon Jan 20, 2020 10:03 pm

Hi guys,

I was wondering what were your favorite video games of the decade, here are mine :

1) Borderlands 2 (Xbox 360)
Maybe I would feel different now, older and wiser, but I never laughed as much as with this game (and its 2 best DLCs, Torgue's and Tiny Tina's). Both the pre sequel and Borderlands 3 were quite big letdown on that side, and given that #2 had perfected the game play, design, world building and rhythm of the game, I don't feel there are adding much (Pre Sequel might have had the playable characters with the best skills, that's that)
2) Fallout 4 (PS4)
I know I'm in the minority, but that's my favorite Fallout. I probably didn't give enough chances to 1 and 2, but of the 3D ones, Fallout 4 has for me the best story beats, the most fascinating world and the most freedom (as well as the best DLCs).
3) Civilization VI (PC)
Probably the game I have played the most this decade (after Candy Crush, maybe ?), even better with the 2 extensions (hoping for announcement of the 3rd this week) and many DLCs. I'm still not a top level player, but I feel I got to the level where I can increase the difficulty a bit to get a challenge that's hard but manageable if I play well
4) Batman : Arkham City (Xbox 360)
Topping Arkham Asylum was an almost impossible task, but they somehow managed it : the city burst with (gangsta) life, the rogue gallery is awesome, the challenge is well balanced, the boss fight memorable (though nothing beats Asylum's Mr Freeze)... Arkham Origin and Arkham Knight are cool too, but can't compare.
5) Persona 5 (PS4)
6) The Walking Dead Season 1 (Xbox 360)
My heart still hurts !
7) HITMAN/HITMAN 2 (PC)
They are basically the same game, especially with all the levels of 1 included in Hitman 2, so it feels right to rank them together. In the best levels (Miami or Sapienza for instance), there are so many possibilities of interactions and machinations that the possibilities sometimes feel endless.
8) Portal 2 (Xbox 360)
9) Fallout New Vegas (PC)
10) LIMBO (Xbox 360)
11) Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (Xbox 360)
Favorite game to watch competitive matches of.
12) Disco Elysium (PC)
Might benefit from being very recent, but probably the best written game I have played, it can be deep, touching, funny or depressing, sometimes within the same discussion ; the feeling of freedom, at least in the first half, is astonishing for this kind of game.
13) Red Dead Redemption (Xbox 360)
14) The Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild (Switch)
15) Into the Breach (PC)
16) Return of the Obra-Dinn (Switch)
17) Rogue Legacy (PC)
18) GTA V (Xbox 360)
19) VVVVVV (Android)
20) The Legend of Zelda : A Link Between Worlds (3DS)
21) Marvel's Spiderman (PS4)
22) Fire Emblem Awakening (3DS)
23) Baba is You (Switch)
24) Mario Kart 8 (Switch)
25) Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
26) Superhot (PC)
27) The Last of Us (PS4)
28) Bastion (Xbox 360)
29) Tomb Raider (PC)
30) Far Cry 3 (PC)
31) Hollow Knight (Switch)
32) The Stanley Parable (PC)
33) Marvel Avengers Alliance (Facebook)
34) Deathspank (Xbox 360)
35) Bioshock : Infinite (Xbox 360)
36) South Park : The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360)
37) SSX (Xbox 360)
38) Reigns (Android)
39) Mario + The Lapins Crétins: Kingdom Battle (Switch)
40) Candy Crush Jelly (Android)

Game not included because I don't think they are that good :
Red Dead Redemption 2
Super Mario Odyssey
Resident Evil 7

Games I haven't played but would probably have solid chances of making the list :
Nier Automate (bought, but haven't had the time to play yet)
The Outer Worlds (same)
The Outer Wilds (waiting for the PC, or Switch, release)
Persona 4 (hoping for a Switch remaster at some point)
Control
Metal Gear Solid 5

Top 10, order I think of them:
Persona 5
Fire Emblem: 3 Houses
Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
Celeste
Mass Effect 2
Super Mario Maker
Valkyria Chronicles 4
Catherine
Tales of Berseria
Batman: Arkham City

I'm mostly into RPGs and old school platformers as you can tell. A lot of the popular games that aren't on my list probably aren't because I don't like games that give you so much freedom there's no strong main narrative and most of your time is spent on repetitive fetch quests and chores, or grinding.

For example, Zelda Breath of the Wild I didn't get into just because you spend too much time on weapon maintenance and not enough in real dungeons, and Super Mario Odyssey I didn't get into because like 100 moons are fun and the other 800 are repetitive chores, and you can't skip the ones that aren't fun. And most Western RPGs don't have stories that interest me because the main character has no defined personality, most of the game is spent on fetch quests, and all the NPCs instead of supporting you and making you emotionally invest in them treat you like an errand boy.

Don't bother with FFXV.
