They state that is the list of the most interesting games to play as of today.
When looking at a game serie or a genre, they chose to select "the one who pushed its logic and grammar the furthest".

It is obviously open for discussions, and they admitted quite openly there is a lot of subjectivity. But didn't Portal 2 push Portal's grammar further if we follow their logic ? On the other hand, is Fallout 4 a step forward compared to New Vegas (I really love Fallout 4, it's my favorite in the serie and I am currently replaying it... but I'd say an objective look at it might put New Vegas first, if only because it gives you way more solutions to avoid violence if you want and use charm or cunning to beat the game)

I think the oldest game is Mario Galaxy, so from 2005.
As you can see they are fairly indie oriented, even if there are a fair share of AAA games, and they state "we are going to say Hades is not included due to being too recent, but actually we found it not readable enough for a rogue like and didn't find the narration that interesting".

They also ranked them between "for everyone" and "for beginners", "for medium players" and "for experts" which is sometimes strange (Crusader Kings III is for everyone for instance), but basically mean "is the game accessible ?" and apparently by that they mostly meant
Everyone : requires no agility, leaves you as much time as you want for choices (thus Crusader Kings or Oxygenfree being for everyone)
Beginners : real time but on a simple axe of movement
Medium : movement in 3D without managing the camera
Experts : movement in 3D with management of the camera needed
(but they actually put Cuphead, rightfully, in Expert, so they didn't fully follow that rule)
