Unacclaimed V: Heats, Week 4

Post by Bang Jan »

The way this game works is that you will be given two sets of four songs, your job is to rank each of the sets from best to worst. First place gets 4 points, second gets 3 etc.

The song with the most points in each set will advance to the semi-finals. If there is a tie for points, then the song with more first place votes will advance. If they are tied on first place votes as well, there will be a sudden death tiebreak. Also the six highest scoring non-winners in the heat stage (based off point per voter and then percentage of first place votes) will also advance to the semi-finals.

Feel free to ask any questions, deadline is next Wednesday at 15:00 UTC.

The first week so far that I've liked every song. (Although I also liked 7 of the 8 last week.) As usual, people do a great job with the nominations for this game!

I have researched this song extensively, and heard many different releases and recordings, including the official video, and the majority of them have the song title as "Nights".

The only version with the K is a remix from 1994, which is not the one nominated.

Well, maybe you're right but both RYM and discogs list it as Knights.

I have an opposite reaction to JamieW, as I thought this was a very minor week, although that is mostly due to the first group.

I really don't care about any of these, sadly. I thought Julia was outright bad; these guys can do much better than this underdeveloped, yet long sing. Arabian Nights is close to obnoxious and You and Your Sister is a dime a dozen song to me. That leaves El cantante as the only song worthy of first place, but I'm not singing that one's praises soon either.

GROUP THETA
1. Café Tacvba | Ojalá que llueva café

Much better, even if it lacks a real killer. The wild energy f Café Tacvba wins out over the rather original approach by T Power v MK Ultra to lounge music.

Wintry, resigned and haunting, "Julia" is the both the standout of 1984: For the Love of Big Brother and the best representation of its narrative world, in which humankind’s descent into anonymous oppressive machinery is so brutally chronicled, which is likely why it was so heavily featured in the film. In the context of the album, "Julia" is the last song that features Annie's natural voice (along with the vocoder), as if it's one last conflict of human vs machine. The presence of that plaintive, searching, almost hymn-like string melody atop the foreboding, ever-descending bass line further captures this conflict. So many moments take my breath away, including that mournful electronic flute that embodies the spirit of the song, fleeing ever higher in abject horror and sorrow at the crushing dread of it all, as well as the stark beauty of those delicate piano trills that couple with the pulsing electronics to reveal Julia's vulnerability, giving way to Annie's disarming "Oh, Julia", as if she, too, was swept away by the fleetingness of the moment, and then the synth bass adds its own sorrowful embrace before being subsumed into the dread of the deep piano chords.

The fateful answer to the half-human, half-machine existential question "will we still be there?" is given not only by Dave's masterful guitar touching a perfectly somber and mournful tone in eulogy to Julia and her rebellious humanity as the song fades out, but also by the abrupt change in sound and theme of the subsequent songs, with Big Brother's mouthpiece ("DoublePlusGood"), even more processed vocals ("Ministry of Love") and the nightmarish "Room 101" slamming the door with an authoritative resolution.

It's my second favorite Eurythmics song, and that is quite a lofty position!

I also enjoyed "Arabian Nights".

"Fool" is a pretty clear winner here, though I also enjoyed "Mutant Jazz" and "Get Thy Bearings".

Damn it - i don't know how i missed the week that my song nomination came up (You and Your Sister), but glad to see it get the recognition i think it deserves in its placement in the group! If you liked it i highly reccommend you give Speed of Sound a listen as well. Its in a similar style and may in fact be my favourite Chris Bell song now!
