Unacclaimed V: Heats, Week 5
The way this game works is that you will be given two sets of four songs, your job is to rank each of the sets from best to worst. First place gets 4 points, second gets 3 etc.
The song with the most points in each set will advance to the semi-finals. If there is a tie for points, then the song with more first place votes will advance. If they are tied on first place votes as well, there will be a sudden death tiebreak. Also the six highest scoring non-winners in the heat stage (based off point per voter and then percentage of first place votes) will also advance to the semi-finals.
Feel free to ask any questions, deadline is next Wednesday at 15:00 UTC.

Great stuff this week. I didn't like putting Youssou N’Dour at the foot of Iota, but it had to be.

Re: Unacclaimed V: Heats, Week 5
Glad I decided to hop into this today.
GROUP IOTA (6.5/10)
Jaga Jazzist - Tocatta
Game Theory - Like a Girl Jesus
Youssou N'Dour - Leaving (Dem)
Thrice - Image of the Invisible
Tocatta: Clear winner for me, reminds me a bit of Mark Hollis
Like a Girl Jesus: Didn't like it on the first listen, loved it on the second
Leaving (Dem): Good, just good
Image of The Invisible: Never been a fan of such vocals
GROUP KAPPA (7.8/10)
Fishmans - Walking in the Rythm
Bon Jovi - Only Lonely
Nightpool Neon - Perfume From Now On
AURORA - Running With he Wolves
Walking in the Rythm: Wasn't expecting anything better than Tocatta in this group, but Fishmans delivered
Only Lonely: My favorite Bon Jovi song I've heard to date (although it's admittedly not a lot)
Perfume From Now On: Great, in a weird kind of way? How do you even call this music, 'Ambient Choir Post-Music'?
Running With the Wolves: Great song, I've have actually heard this before (unlike the rest of the lot), last place is not what it deserves, the rest just deserves it even less.
P.S. This is the first week of Unacclaimed I've participated. So I got a question: the music in general this week felt pretty 'non-mainstream' (for as far as that term means anything). Is that a common occurence or did I just 'get lucky'?

I think it's relatively normal for a lot of weird and obscure music to end up in the tournament.BobPatience wrote:P.S. This is the first week of Unacclaimed I've participated. Re: Unacclaimed V: Heats, Week 5
Considering no song on AM's official song list and also no song from any of it's acclaimed albums (bubblers included) you filter out a lot of more famous songs. This week is probably a bit more out there than usual, but obviously there won't be any real hits.BobPatience wrote: P.S. This is the first week of Unacclaimed I've participated. Easily the best week we've had yet.
GROUP IOTA
2. Jaga Jazzist | Tocatta
3. Thrice | Image of the Invisible
5. Youssou N’Dour | Leaving (Dem)
7. Game Theory | Like a Girl Jesus
Tocatta is one of those types of songs for which polls like these exist: surprising, captivating and probably unlikely to be found on your own. I already knew Image of the Invisible and I happen to like Thrice brand of rock, even if it is almost the least original song of the week. Leaving (Dem) is just lovely and top N'Dour. Like a Girl Jesus also recently showed up in the Biggest Fan game. It's like-able, but not in the same league of the other tracks in this group.
GROUP KAPPA
1. Fishmans | Walking in the Rhythm
4. AURORA | Running with the Wolves
6. Nightpool Neon | Perfume From Now On
8. Bon Jovi | Only Lonely
It looks like Fishmans have a bit of a walk-over this week, looking at many of the other posts. And I agree, it is a great composition, that doesn't bore a second of it's long run. It would be the weirdest song of the week under any normal circumstance, but this time we have the bizarre Perfume From Now On here. At the start that barely counts as a song, but more as a sound collage, where music is only present very far in the background. It becomes more clear as it goes on, but the music never quite seems to be at the forefront. Very interesting and unique, but at the same time I can't picture myself putting this on if I want to, you know, listen to music. Less strange are AURORA and Bon Jovi, but at least for AURORA that isn't a disadvantage. It's good alternative pop with appealing vocals. I thought I knew a lot of Bon Jovi, but this early effort is unknown to me. It's a band I feel I've outgrown in a way and Only Lonely hardly has the outlandish power of their best work, so it ends up being the black sheep of the week.
