Erik B. & Rakim – My Melody: 5
I've liked some of Erik B. & Rakim's more famous songs in the past, but I'm not yet sure about this one. For some reason they are an act whose work usually has to grow with me. Still, the rather heavy sound didn't connect at the moment, even if the rap flows well.

73. Archie Shepp - Hipnosis: 7
I love the random walk of his Sax in the first half. I would prefer it to end there, the trombone part really dropped the ball.
74. James Brown & His Furious Flames – Tell Me What I Did Wrong: 5
75. Les Rita Mitsouko, featuring Sparks – Singing in the Shower: 7
I must be in a good mood today, all the songs sound good. The best thing about this is the bass which has a Tina Weymouth feel about it.
76. Lee “Scratch” Perry & The Upsetters – Dread Lion: 8
Can't go wrong with tracks off this album.
77. Adam & the Ants – Stand and Deliver: 4
Well maybe not a good enough mood to welcome this blast from the past.
78. Erik B. & Rakim – My Melody: 6

Oliver Koletzki – lyéwaye (Hatzler Remix): 2
Okay, I literally forgot to vote for this one yesterday. And really, that is no surprise when I listen to it, because this is the most formulaic and predictable dance track you can think of. Even without ever having heard it I quickly knew how it would go. That makes it unmemorable and just uninteresting for me. The original non-remix is no better. In this case I would honestly like to hear what someone who likes it has to say in its favor.
Prince – Colonized Mind: 6
Thanks to Moonbeam we will be forced to hear every Prince deep cut ever created. This one is quite all right. Not a career highlight, but certainly a good song.

Prince is usually hit-or-miss for me, and this one was a definite hit.
The Smiths – Sheila Take a Bow - 7
Adam & the Ants – Stand and Deliver - 6
Erik B. & Rakim – My Melody - 4
It's not my favourite but I also don't think it deserved to get sampled in a Limp Bizkit song.
Oliver Koletzki – lyéwaye (Hatzler Remix) - 1

A song from The Smith's peak period. It's a typical song for the band, but at that stage you couldn't go wrong with them.

Re: Biggest Fan - March 2019
This one’s a 9. My parents used to sing it around me all the time and when they overhauled my Shuffle so I could work out to actual music with a beat (as opposed to, say, Tom Lehrer), this one made me happy every time it came on. It’s bouncy, has some great jangle guitar, fun and straightforward lyrics (“You’re a girl and I’m a boy”), a strong hook, and is just a great and happy song overall. It has high replay value compared to some other Smiths songs and it was the first of theirs I really came to love.

78. Erik B. & Rakim – My Melody
You know rap isn't my dope, but this one has a little something pleasant about it. 5/10
79. Oliver Koletzki – lyéwaye (Hatzler Remix)
Nope 2/10
80. Prince – Colonized Mind
One of his best songs of the post-2000 years... misses, as in almost all his songs of his years, the grain of madness that made Prince's great songs before. 9/10
81. The Smiths – Sheila Take a Bow
I don't know why, The Smiths never really moved me, yet they have everything I should love. This is no exception to the rule. 5/10
82. Lucinda Williams – Metal Firecracker
I know it's not necessarily bad, but it's not my style. 4/10
83. B.B. King – I Can’t Lose
As usual. 5/10

Great week for me, the best so far…
Including my first 10 on the game, my favourite song of Lucinda Williams (with "Drunken Angel" as a close second). Especially for this first chord on the guitar (Am9) but also for the clean but sharp guitar sound and the chorus ("all I ask / don't tell anybody the secrets / I told you").
Re: Biggest Fan - March 2019
Will do. Since there have been a few of my picks over the last few weeks I haven't rated yet, I'm gonna try to rationalize and give context on them all.Rob wrote:In this case I would honestly like to hear what someone who likes it has to say in its favor.
The first song was B.F.O.D.A.A.S. by Mall Grab. I thought about combining my comments about B.F.O.D.A.A.S. and lyéwaye into a single entry since they are both representative of Electronic Dance Music, but I realized that House and Techno are very different things for me.
fasbjd commented on B.F.O.D.A.A.S.: Not enough going on to sustain its over 6 minute running time but enough to keep you dancing.
For me this is the very essence of House music: Just keep the groove going. If it still makes you dance, it's not too long. To be a bit more precise, B.F.O.D.A.A.S. is a bona fide example of the Lo-Fi House genre, stripping down House music to its very basics. This also explains fasbjd's comments about the grubby panning, it's a conscious design choice rather than sloppy producing. To be honest, maybe that's actually the same for these young producers.
This track appeared on the Pool Party Music EP, which I think is a perfect title. This is exactly the type of music I'd love to hear at a pool party (I've never actually been to a pool party, mind you).
The second song was Intro by Inglebirds. You called that one very obscure, Rob. While this is probably true in the context of an english-speaking community like Acclaimedmusic, this doesn't really apply in their native Germany. Inglebirds is a rap group fronted by the pretty famous German rapper DCVDNS (a nonsense name that allegedly originated from random hammering on a keyboard), whose last two albums charted at number 12 and 5 in Germany, respectively. He is known for a very offbeat, almost surreal humour and a love for everything associated with West Coast Gangster Rap of the 90's. Especially the latter also permeates his work with Inglebirds, a group he founded with two childhood friends from his native smalltown of St. Ingbert. The name Inglebirds refers to both St. Ingbert and Inglewood, combining both their mundane and spiritual home, if you will. The other two members are Wolfgang H. aka Dub Gang who produced the beats, but also holds up surprisingly well in terms of rapping, and Hermann Weiss, who is the least technically skilled of the trio, but gives the group an almost Biggie-like vibe by sheer physical presence. Inglebirds' only album Big Bad Birds charted at number 18 in Germany and the group performed at Germany's biggest rap festival, Splash.
You write that Intro feels like an intro for some kind of TV show, Rob, and I definitely agree with that sentiment. Actually, as a side note, on the album there is an intro to the intro that is directly based on the intro of the cartoon show Spacehawks. This is of no real relevance here, just a funny little anecdote. You also call Intro goofy-yet-epic, and I'm struggling to find a better expression. It's definitely tongue-in-cheek, yet still has a certain kind of presumptuous pathos that leaves me in a child-like awe. This feeling is only strengthened by the lyrics of the last part (what follows is my miserable attempt at a translation):
Carried by the wind through time and space/
The eye that circles under the stars/
Iron birds spreading the suffering/
Get ready for the Inglebirds
I've got to say I was a little surprised by the moderately positive reaction to this song.
The last of my picks that came up, and the one that made me finally write this post, was the Hatzler Remix of Oliver Koletzki's lyéwaye.
*** Disclaimer: Very lofty words ahead. Read on on your own discretion. ***
So this is Techno music. When talking about the appeal of this kind of music, there are different dimensions to consider. Of course, there is the very obvious dimension that Techno music represents freedom, in the sense that the dancefloor of a good Techno party is one of the very few places on earth where I have experienced total personal freedom, expressing myself exactly in the way I actually see myself, really living in the moment, all that stuff, you know the drill. That is all very true, but I think there is more to it. For me, Techno music represents life itself. The 4/4 rhythm represents the human hertbeat. It just keeps going during a DJ set, and there's nothing you can do about it, just like life. It inspires you to keep moving forward, but inevitably, you will also explore the darker, more hidden corners of your mind. It is thus a very manifestation of the contradictions and absurdities we face everyday, and that eventually make living worthwile. After all, if life would be 100 % rational, it would be predetermined and we would've lived it all by now, wouldn't we? Call it yin and yang, call it dialectics, call it second-rate philosophical ramblings by that German guy on AM, all that is embodied by Techno music. For me personally, at least.
I tend to group Techno songs into three categories: Intellectual, spritual and social. lyéwaye is, superficially regarded, a very social Techno track. Hatzler uses all these bips and bleeps to form a slightly syncopated rhythm that makes it very easy to dance to. This is a track for the big festival stages in broad daylight. But what really drives this track home and makes is stand out is the eerie synth sound coming into the picture for the first time just after the two minute mark. For me it's spine-tingling and gives the track a spiritual edge.
Another way to look at this is to ask yourself how a DJ selects the records he plays. Usually, there's two categories: First, there's new and/or very obscure records to show that the DJ still has his edge and is at the vanguard of the movement, and second there's the big classics, the crowd-pleasers that form a common ground between the DJ and the crowd. lyéwaye definitely already falls into the second category. I have heard it in very different locations by very different DJ's, and I think that's also an indicator of the quality of the track.
Of course this is 100 % subjective and I can see that it's probably hard to retrace for someone with no connection to Techno music whatsoever, but I was asked to do this and I did. And I'm sorry to say this might not be the last time a formulaic and predictable dance track off my list will be presented in this game, so get yourself prepared
Oh and because this is a ranking game, here are my rankings for these tracks:
Mall Grab - B.F.O.D.A.A.S.: 8/10
Inglebirds - Intro: 8/10
Oliver Koletzki – lyéwaye (Hatzler Remix): 9/10

Yes and you did so greatly! That was a very good read.Krurze wrote: Of course this is 100 % subjective and I can see that it's probably hard to retrace for someone with no connection to Techno music whatsoever, but I was asked to do this and I did.
I only didn't like lyéwaye of these three, but then again, techno in general doesn't do it for me. Nice to hear the perspective from a fan, especially because I feel that techno in general is not talked about here much.
B.B. King - I Can't Lose: 6
I generally like B.B. King quite a bit and this is no exception. He has more memorable songs, though.

Giorgio Moroder – (Theme from) Midnight Express: 8
I have not yet seen this film, but based on story and stills I expect this music to be completely wrong for the movie, despite Moroder winning an Oscar for the piece. Then again, this big synth sound had it's moment back then and sometimes it could wreck the atmosphere of the film (I love Vangelis, but his score for The Killing Fields remains in my mind as one of the biggest missmatches of sound and image in film history).
Luckily, I am not judging this score on the basis of the film, but on itself and it is a sweeping, romantic piece of work. There is a little Middle-Eastern flavour in the second half, which I guess fits in with the movie, but also just helps to make this track a little more dynamic.

This, along with The Chase from the same soundtrack are the peaks of that late 70s electro sound in my opinion - one of the very best soundtracks ever.

79. Oliver Koletzki – lyéwaye (Hatzler Remix): 4
Techno songs will usually get a 4 from me. Best I can say is that at least I don't hate them.
80. Prince – Colonized Mind: 7
I don't care for Prince enough to listen to all of his albums. As safetycat said a bit hit-and-miss. This is a good one.
81. The Smiths – Sheila Take a Bow: 7
82. Lucinda Williams – Metal Firecracker: 7
83. B.B. King – I Can’t Lose: 6.5
84. Giorgio Moroder – (Theme from) Midnight Express: 6.5
Really good run of songs here.

Not as good as The Chase of course, but I'm still a fan of little old school electronic music, so a 6/10 here.

Far from the worst thing I ever heard, but it doesn't do much to me either. Don't like the singer's voice much.
