Biggest Fan Songs - April 2019
Welcome to the April 2019 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were 13051 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.
There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.
Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with 13051 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.
You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

Sorry Panam but I completely reject this particular kind of music and voice. 2/10

Not my favourite genre, but Dust Bowl Ballads is one of (if not the) best examples of it and this has always been one of the standouts off that album in my opinion.

Big fan of Dust Bowl Ballads here and this song captures what makes it so special. Simple, yet truly poetic and heartfelt. I love Guthrie's voice too.

Judas Priest - United: 6
It starts as expected from Judas Priest: with screeching guitars. But somehow it quickly changes into something else than a metal song. The guitars take a back seat for what is basically a We Will Rock You like chant. It's goofy and the vocals aren't exactly a match for Freddy Mercury, but it is silly fun and perhaps empowering if you are in the right mood.

Judas Priest - United:

I never really got British Steel. I understand it is their most famous album in the mainstream because Breaking the Law was so catchy but for me the main appeal of Judas Priest was the dual lead guitar thing. Their guitar solos (eg on Beyond the Realms of Death from the late 70s and Painkiller from the early 90s - both of which have two incredible solos) and Rob Halford's great vocals were the main draw, but here they are both thrown away and replaced by weak, generic AC/DC-lite hard rock.

I am perhaps the biggest JP fan in the forum, but that does not include ”United”.

Fiona Apple - Limp: 8
One of the great albums of the nineties, from one of the greats, who makes her greatest work here. Yes, there are better songs on When the Pawn than Limp, but it is still captures everything I love about Apple and that album: the spastic jazz tunes, her acerbic delivery and lyrics meant to either punch her enemies or herself in the gut (here it is clearly the former). Impossible for me not to love.

Remember this one from Goodfellas - always like a bit of doo wop but this one's a bit too thin to be one of the all time classics.

On the contrary. Among hard core doo wop fans it's in the all time top 25. Number 20 on this list.Jap123 wrote:The Harptones - Life is But A Dream:

I was just saying in my opinion that is the case. For example if i personally made a doo wop list i would put songs such as Maybe by the Chantels or Oh What a Nite by the Dells higher than this one, even though they rank lower on the list you gave.

Pretty much what you expect of Bruce Springsteen. Even that it is an outtake of The River album is no surprise. On that one it would probably almost feel like filler, as it may be a bit too much like the general sound of that album. To me however, that is not a bad thing at all, as I love The River.

The River has some of the best outtakes around and i thouroughly recommend giving the full box set version of the album with all of them on the third and fourth disks (first two are the original double album) a listen. This is one of the more memorable ones, but doesn't reach classic status like some of his other outtakes have (i.e. The Promise, Because The Night, Be True etc.)

90. Woody Guthrie – I Ain’t Got No Home In This World Anymore: 4
Guthrie has never appealed to me.
91. Judas Priest - United: 3
I see this has been compared to AC/DC and Queen. My reaction to it then is not surprising.
92. Fiona Apple - Limp: 7.5
I prefer this to 'Paper Bag'.
93. The Harptones – Life Is But a Dream: 6
94. Bruce Springsteen – Take ‘Em As They Come: 6.5
I am not a fan of Bruce Springsteen; Mainly because so many of his songs sound the same. Taken on their own, most of his songs are decent versions of 'the Springsteen song' , and this is no exception.
95. Nirvana - Dive: 5
96. Son House – Death Letter: 6.5

Re: Biggest Fan - April 2019
Also, a question. For Wednesday I have song named Konomi by Nujabes lined up. The thing is, I can not find any proof on the internet that this song actually exists. Search engines suggest Kumomi, an actual song by Nujabes, but I'm trying to confirm whether this is the song that is actually meant. The nominator - Bootsy - can't be send a private message, so I hope he reads this or someone else can point me to Konomi. With no reply on Wednesday, I will replace the song with something else.

5Branford Marsalis – Berta, Berta
Could have been a good record if there was more than just the chorus over and over all throughout.
