Best Ever Choruses Poll 2019- POLL CLOSED. Off-topic thread

Post by mileswide »

The mighty chorus. The hook if you're talking about rap. The refrain if you're talking French, German or old-timey English. The moneymaker if... actually, no one calls it that, forget I said that last one...

Anyway, choruses are brilliant, right? Who's with me in having a choruses poll?

EDIT: Since this initial post, the rules of the poll have been put up for discussion and are as follows:

1) Participants are allowed a minimum of 20 selections and a maximum of 200. Any alternative suggestions to the lower and upper limits of the allotted amounts will be adopted as long as they meet with more votes of consent than of dissent.

2) In spite of the name, this poll is to rank the songs that contain the best choruses, rather than to rank the individual separate choruses within the songs, so a selection for a song will be considered as one for all of its choruses. This is so we don't have a face-off between Smells Like Teen Spirit's 1st chorus and SLTS chorus 2, for example.
This is not to say you can't signal your favourite individual chorus within a track- I definitely will be doing so thusly, "A Song For You [2nd Chorus]"- but it won't have any effect on the results beyond your choice of song.

3) Most choices will be accepted as valid but I ask that any cases that you're unsure of their eligibility be referred to the thread before submitting as part of your list. Instrumentals/wordless tracks will of course be disqualified outright but non-verbal choruses in otherwise verbal songs are welcomed (e.g. Wake Up, Land of a Thousand Dances). Instrumental sections where the chorus logically would appear will be not treated as choruses but decisions to this end can be overturned on appeal if argued convincingly enough.

4) For admin purposes, Honorio has agreed to oversee the calculation of the results, for which I'm massively grateful, and I will be responsible for the rollout of the results. Please direct any relevant queries accordingly.

5) The deadline is 23:59 on 21st August AM Forum time.

Any questions on the above, please ask. Otherwise, happy polling!

PS Please excuse the time lapse between the opening of the poll and this edited post. I'd typed all this out, then lost internet connection for a few hours :(

I was wondering what artist would overperform the most in this department compared to their overall ranking and I think the answer is Oasis.

I think a top 50 maximum would be good, not sure about when a deadline should be though.

I know, where do you even start?? As a sidenote, the best Stevie chorus in my eyes is probably You Haven't Done Nothin'

Agreed, I can see this favouring more singalong/trad bands and genres relative to their rank like Britpop, hard rock, Motown, which isn't a bad thing- much of my favourite music is covered by those categories. For me, I know The Killers would appear higher for choruses than they would do in any other list of mine...

That sounds workable, we could say 20 minimum, 50 maximum, deadline a month after its official start (not yet but when we've agreed on rules)?

I can think of at least 2 Oasis songs that have all but guaranteed a spot in my top 10, one of which will probably be my number 1.

50 is fine with me. I could easily post more though. There are a lot of great choruses out there.

And yes, Oasis will definitely be featured.

So are the ending refrains to "Don't Stop Believing" and "Hey Jude" going to count as a chorus? Or is a chorus something that repeats throughout the song and is broken up by verses/a bridge?

Whoops, I hadn't thought of that! I don't have any issue with this kind of coda-like refrain being considered choruses, especially in Hey Jude, which doesn't have a mid-song chorus to confuse the matter (too much)*. Would everyone else be ok with including these?

*There is obviously a conventional chorus in Don't Stop Believin' "Strangers waiting..." but the vote should go for the songs with the best choruses, rather than the individual choruses themselves, in my opinion. I am open to any objections to this, however.

I would argue that "Hey Jude" doesn't even have a chorus, that it has verses, bridges, and an outro (which is actually quite a feat, because a fair amount of songs meander around melodically until they reach the chorus).

I can see that argument as well but Hey Jude and other songs with closing refrains/codas that repeat the title won't be disqualified by me. I would ask that voters point out any cases they feel are borderline before adding them to their list. Any instrumentals included will of course be given the marching orders!

Just so we all know, I plan to open the poll for voting in a matter of hours, not long now :D

As I've gone through and started making my choices, I've realized I feel like 50 is a small number to narrow it down to. I might end up submitting 200, so if more than a quarter of them count, that would be great.

On reflection, there could be the greater risk of tied places with 50-song-lists.

And if we restrict it to 200, it's still not a number that would rival the upper limit of the Top Songs of All Time poll, so there's no danger of us simply duplicating our selections from last year's TSoAT. You have my blessing for all 200 to be counted, andyd1010, but nothing beyond that!

Anyone who'd rather not have 20 minimum, 200 maximum with a month deadline, please say within the next few hours

Don't worry about it being provisional, I'm sure I'll have to go back to tweak mine and I'm certain you two's lists are as flat-out fantastic as ever- I haven't read through either list as I don't want them to overly influence my own. I will get the toothcomb out once I've shared my list, which I'll do straight after this post!

I've tried to go either for huge choruses or ones that do something different (choruses with no vocals, different lyrics each time, more restrained choruses than the verses). Hopefully this won't mean a mixture between the obvious and the obtuse! Also wanted to limit myself to one per artist as much as possible and to 150, so that I didn't just start listing my favourite songs, rather than my favourite choruses. There's also more of a slant towards modern songs than there would be normally because some choruses are best when they're fresh...anyway, here goes!

1| The Killers| Mr. Brightside| 2003
2| Meat Loaf| Bat out of Hell| 1977

Thank you, mileswide! But I need recommendations about which formula I should use. Last time I managed the Excels on a poll was on 2011 (then I helped whuntva with the Classical music poll).

My inexperience is showing here, I probably should have got advice about formulae beforehand, sorry if I've left you in the lurch, Honorio :(

Would a similar method to the 300/(rank +2) moonbeam's been using for the 80s years polls be viable with this poll? Does anyone have any insight as to whether it would be suitable in this instance?

I had a peep and you've definitely forgotten Harvey Danger's finest but you've still got nearly a month to make what adjustments you need, I know I'll be taking advantage of that time throwing songs in, taking them out, putting them back in again!

Thanks to you both for your predictably top-quality lists for this poll, hope to see many more of the same calibre from other AM-ers :D

Some interesting cases:

1234 by Feist; Vicarious by Tool; What It Is to Burn by Finch.

In all three cases, I think the first two choruses are merely good, and the final chorus is astounding. I guess I should just vote for the average quality between the three choruses in each song? There are plenty of songs that have a final chorus that's much better than the prior choruses.

There are a few songs where I love the pre-chorus and feel more indifferent about the actual chorus, so I'm leaning toward not voting for those (Under the Boardwalk, Ship to Wreck).

Stevie voting for Seven Nation Army is an interesting one. I absolutely love that guitar riff but never thought of it as a chorus... although I guess it is at sports games when everyone is shouting it.

All These Things That I've Done is another one. Nick, are you taking it as an average of the normal choruses plus the 'I've Got Soul But I'm Not a Soldier' part?

Fluorescent Adolescent is another similar example (like Don't Stop Believing also) with a chorus and then a big refrain at the end, so I'll treat that the same way.

I’m taking this poll to mean the song with the best chorus, so no, not an average. And I’m counting the “I’ve got soul...” section as the bridge. Though the parameters of this poll appear subjective, so I wouldn’t begrudge anyone for having a different interpretation than I do.

Good spot Andy, probably should have made it clearer that choruses with only vocal sounds, rather than words, are valid but not instrumental sections where the chorus would logically go. I'll reflect this in the initial post. Might this be a chance to slot Flagpole Sitta in its place, Stevie?

I second that on on both counts, Nick- "yeaaaaah, you know you gotta help me out.." is the chorus, "I've got soul" is the middle 8/bridge as I understand it. There's an argument for the latter being the refrain as it ends with the title drop, though, so I won't clash with anyone if they take Andy's view on it.

And this is a vote to find the song with the best chorus. If you think all the choruses are outstanding, then just list the name of the track. If you want it to be known that you prefer a particular chorus within a song, you can highlight that [in brackets] but it won't affect the overall ranking. I just don't want a situation where a song like Hurricane by Dylan is taking up the list just because different people have different preferences for its 11 (very distinct) choruses!

Any alternative views on the above are more than welcome though :D

Alright, I suppose that makes sense. The guitar riff comes where the chorus would be, but I see the point. Flagpole Sitta takes its place.

Interesting, I've never seen someone refer to 'Hurricane's' verses as choruses.

I'd count the "Here comes the story of the hurricane" "I saw them leaving" etc. sections as choruses- the chord sequence changes, there's an audible gap after the verses to lead into it, the guitar playing becomes more emphatic, there's the title drop and these sections occur after every verse.

But I know they are generally seen as the ends of the verses (Genius, which I worship, supports this view), so I am open to being persuaded otherwise, including removing it from my list...what does everyone else reckon?

A chorus, imo, has to repeat. In 'Hurricane', of the 11 sections, only one of them repeats one-and-a-half times (second part of verse 1 repeats in 5 and half of it in 11), and then not even exact. Now 2 (or 2.5) choruses isn't unheard of, but in this case it's 2.5 out of 11 sections. It's also very much possible that a song repeats a verse, 'Mr. Brightside' being an obvious example.

However, there are examples of songs where I'd consider a part a 'chorus' even though it doesn't repeat. In Mumford and Sons' 'The Cave' there's a repeating chorus after verse 1, verse 2 and in the outro. And then there's a part after verse 3 that is based the same chords and melody as the 'other' chorus, but has different lyrics. The reason that I do considers this one a chorus is that it's just a one-time deviation out of 4 chorus sections. It also acts very much like a bridge, which 'explains' why they would use different lyrics there.

A good example of a song that I think has multiple choruses is 'Mr. Blue Sky'. It has 3 chorus sections. 1: A-A, 2: A-B-B and 3: A-B where A and B represent the two choruses.

On another note, my current list has 3 songs so far:
The Beatles - For No One
Agnes Obel - Familiar
The Turtles - Eleanore

Is it safe to assume that "Paper Planes", which has words in its chorus but is mainly known for its sound effects (the gun shots, the gun clicking, the cash register) is eligible then?

Choruses are proving trickier to define than I imagined when I opened this thread! I'd say if it's where in a song you'd expect a chorus to go, the phrasing and melody/chord pattern are more or less the same each time but different from those in the verses, it's generally a chorus (but not always!)

I can think of many songs where the lyrics differ in some of the choruses and I don't know what else you'd call the relevant section (among them One Week, And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, Lover I Don't Have to Love, Blue Orchid, The Beautiful South's A Little Time, Christina Aguilera's Beautiful...). Then there are countless tracks where the key changes or even the whole genre and BPM (Time Tempah's Pass Out and Contact by Noisia from UK hip hop to drum and bass).

I know what you mean, though, and I can see in your second paragraphs you've explored some exceptions. At least 17 more choruses til you got yourself a list there, BobPatience- you can do it, I believe in you!
Nick wrote: Wed Jul 24, 2019 8:57 pmIs it safe to assume that "Paper Planes", which has words in its chorus but is mainly known for its sound effects (the gun shots, the gun clicking, the cash register) is eligible then?
Oh yes, the full segment is "All I wanna do is (pow-pow-pow-pow) and a (click kerching!) take ya money", so 100% a chorus in my mind.

If the section solely consisted of the stock sound effects, it'd be doubtful but if it had someone clearly imitating said effects and nothing else, it could qualify as a chorus (if other factors applied).

So, Howlin' For You by The Black Keys where it sounds like Dan Auerbach is impersonating the riff is a chorus for me ("Ba-da-ba-DAH-da! Ba-da-ba-dah-da"). Seven Nation Army (and sadly many other White Stripes songs I love, not least Hello Operator, Icky Thump, Black Math, A Boy's Best Friend...) has the riff instead of the chorus and I'd see it at least as an instrumental break but happy to throw the doors wide to other opinions

I do agree, and I don't expect a chorus to always repeat 100% but in Hurricane the 'choruses', with one exception, hardly share any lyrical content, imo they are second verses/counter verses. A good example of a song with very different but still similar choruses is Counting Crows' 'Mr. Jones.'
One Week - Barenaked Ladies (right?). Chorus is the 'How can I help...' part.
And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda - Eric Bogle/Pogues. The song is in AABAC form where, in my opinion, the C acts more like a second bridge to connect the AABA parts. The 'B' lines, starting with 'then in 1915...' or 'Johnny Turk he was ready...,' are just as different from the 'A' lines as the 'chorus' is.
Love I Don't Have to Love. I don't think that it's a stretch to call the parts starting with 'I want a lover...' choruses.
Blue Orchid - White Stripes. Imo they're refrains, but those are often considered choruses, so I guess they'd fit.
A Little Time - The Beautiful South. Dave's parts are really chorus-like. But imo it makes more sense to see it as chorus/ counter-chorus, especially as it's a duet.
Beautiful - Christina Aguilera. In the 'I/You/We are beautiful...' only the pronouns change, definitely choruses.

Pass Out - Time Tempah The sung parts are all chorus (or hook). You could also see the 'We bring the stars out...' as being the pre-chorus and the 'so let it rain' being the chorus or hook or w/e you want to call it.
Contact - Noisia. I don't see how the 'Yeah we run that...' would not be the chorus/hook.
That said, I'm not into D&B at all, but to me it seems that both tracks are pretty easily divisible in verse (the longer rap parts) or hook (the repeating bit).

But of course this is just my view on chorus/not chorus. In the end it's your decision on what's eligible.

I don't see us as being poles apart on this and you've got points I agree with (especially partial to the idea of A Little Time as being a song of choruses & counter-choruses).

You might well be right about Hurricane, I'm just desperate to cling on to it! That said, I was weighing up One of Us Must Know as one of my Dylan choices, so I can always use it as a (hopefully?) less dubious selection.

Some notes:
16) Crosby, Stills & Nash - Suite: Judy Blue Eyes consists of 3 parts (of course, it's a suite) and the chorus only appears in part 1, is this allowed?
42) Fats Domino - Ain't That a Shame and 46) Bill Haley and His Comets - (We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock (and possibly more) are 12-bar blues where the last 4 or 8 of those 12 bars are repeated (effectively forming a chorus), are those fine?
43) The Seekers - Georgy Girl this song is technically in AABAC form, but the 'AC' part repeats, I'm kinda on the fence with this one.

Some dance tracks are strange cases, as the genre frequently uses repeats, although they may continue volume and tempo switches. We Are Your Friends by Justice Vs. Simian is basically the same lines over and over again and that way feel like a chorus, but if a song is all chorus, does it still count as a chorus?

A parallel I'd make would be with Jesus of Suburbia where there are five distinctly marked parts and, by my reckoning, four repeating choruses. If the lack of a chorus in Dearly Beloved doesn't invalidate the choruses in the other parts, the lack of a chorus in the Doo Doo Doo/Spanish Singing section in S: JBE doesn't change the fact "I am yours, you are mine..." is a chorus in my eyes...
BobPatience wrote: Thu Jul 25, 2019 9:59 pm 42) Fats Domino - Ain't That a Shame and 46) Bill Haley and His Comets - (We're Gonna) Rock Around the Clock (and possibly more) are 12-bar blues where the last 4 or 8 of those 12 bars are repeated (effectively forming a chorus), are those fine?
Can see where you're coming from, Bob- out of these two, ATAS seems a more clear cut chorus as there's a definite build up before he belts out the title, which feels like a transition from verse to chorus. Even with RATC though, the verses follow a formula of setting up the repeated sections, which I think can fairly be called choruses.
BobPatience wrote: Thu Jul 25, 2019 9:59 pm 43) The Seekers - Georgy Girl this song is technically in AABAC form, but the 'AC' part repeats, I'm kinda on the fence with this one.
I've made my peace with the idea of only two out three choruses being the same, I don't want to be responsible for you losing sleep over non-identical choruses though ;-)
Rob wrote: Fri Jul 26, 2019 11:04 am Some dance tracks are strange cases, as the genre frequently uses repeats, although they may continue volume and tempo switches. We Are Your Friends by Justice Vs. Simian is basically the same lines over and over again and that way feel like a chorus, but if a song is all chorus, does it still count as a chorus?
Good question Rob, I'd say most dance selections will probably have to be looked at on a case-by-case basis. I'd say a chorus can only exist in contrast to another lyrical section, which is usually going to be the verse. As you say, WAYF doesn't have a counterpoint to its main lyrics, so it's a reluctant no from me in this instance.

It's getting me thinking, this is, I'm not fully certain that I'm right but I hope my reasoning is making sense!

Ace list Edre! And there doesn't seem to be any doubt about whether any of your choices are choruses or not but I'll review tomorrow along with the other submissions to be certain

Felt bad again for making Steviefan change his list, so I've taken away Hurricane, put in One of Us Must Know and re-jigged my ballot.

Properly listened to everything submitted so far now, so hopefully all of the above can be seen as having a chorus!

Three weeks left by the way!

It is with frustration with myself, sadness but also some relief that I've decided to abandon this Choruses Poll.

It was a nice idea poorly executed by myself that lacked from the outset clear definitions or an agreed formula.

I'm sorry for the way I've conducted many of the discussions above- I probably did so out of a belated attempt to try to clarify the rules but I can easily see it as having put off people who otherwise might have voted. My failure to heed opinions and advice above may have had the same effect and may have left a sour taste for those who did vote.

Speaking of which:

I'm quoting you all, so you don't miss this update that this won't be going ahead and to thank you all for submitting your superb choices to my first poll, sorry that it didn't work out. Hold on to your lists just in case someone else runs a choruses poll in the future!

No worries mileswide. Hosting a poll is a huge undertaking! Don't feel bad for backing out.

I feel worse now, I didn't know anyone else was going to enter, sorry andyd. It would be a shame for everyone's hard work to go to waste.

I know this indecision from me is equally bad as anything I mentioned in the last post but is anyone else considering submitting a list? I do want to keep it running but only if people would deem it worthwhile.

In the meantime, I'll check Andy's choices and I'll hope to make a definite decision soon...

As someone who’s still never run a poll here, I appreciate all of you who do, and I realize it’s a lot of work. So it’s not a problem if this doesn’t come together - I’m still just happy I came up with a list. And my No. 1 seems to be dominating right now, so there are still some good things that have come out of this.

I’ve also thought a lot about the best bridges/middle eights as I’ve gone through my choices, so if you ever wanted to go for your original idea, I’d be down for that too.

Honestly I’ve just been spending a while trying to make mine so sorry for the wait! I can assure you that you probably didn’t alienate anyone here but I completely understand if you don’t want continue with the poll. I think at the very least people can just share lists if they want and it doesn’t have to end with any tally. :)
