Like a few others on here, "Movies" is my SOTY so far, and I'd be shocked if anything beats it the rest of the year. The more I listen to it, the more I think it might be the best song in several years. The last two minutes are utterly breathtaking - it's like a "God Only Knows" level outro. Glad to see I won't be alone with that opinion here!

I love "Movies", but the more I listen to "Andromeda" the more I like it. At this point I'd say it's my favorite off the Weyes Blood album, and a serious contender for my SOTY.

Thanks ColmD, much appreciated!

Would it be a lot of work to post a list of the AM-eligible sources only?

Does anyone have time to do a playlist of these songs?

No...i had a separate tab that was purely publications listed on AM for one reason or another. I can pull that together
Note that I will send on the final version including the remainder of July and all of August at the end of next month

Wow, that would be crazy if Old Town Road really is the critics' number one for the year. It's now officially the longest-running #1 hit in US chart history, so it certainly has a chance. I think Eafquake, Bad Guy, and Seventeen may finish ahead of it ultimately amongst songs released so far. I'd expect (or at least hope!) Movies, Hurry on Home, and Dylan Thomas do a lot better in EOY lists than they did in this one.

Love this song but it's crazy they're putting a 2017 single on a 2019 album. Reminds me of Inspector Norse being on It's Album Time in 2014...

I'm hoping by the time the album comes out I can replace with 'Tailwhip Revisited'. It made no.3 in my 2017 list, would have been higher, but only discovered at last minute in as #1 in Gorilla v Bear list.

Could have competition if Chromatics finally put out Dear Tommy and it has 'I Can Never Be Myself When You're Around' on it (my no. 2 in 2015).

My 25 favourite songs of 2019 so far (and I thought I might as well add brief comments)...

1 | Lizzo | Cuz I Love You
I noticed that this song is described as pop soul. It may be pop soul, but it needs a few superlatives and maybe some expletives to describe the massive sound of it. Gigantic pop soul, more like. Or pop FUCKING soul, y'all. I love how it alternates between sounding like a 60s soul ballad and an intense orchestral fanfare. And even when the music is at its most frenzied, Lizzo's powerful voice outshines everything else.

2 | Vampire Weekend | This Life
I like Vampire Weekend a lot when they create catchy melodies that have a hint of African music in them. They did quite a lot of that on their self-titled debut. And they're doing it again with "This Life". The breezy guitars in this song remind me a bit of African soukous or mbalax music. Just in a very subtle way. It's definitely one of my favourite Vampire Weekend songs.

3 | Sufjan Stevens | Love Yourself
To repeat what I said in a previous post in this thread (because I can't think of another way to put it): It might come across as middle of the road synthpop at first, but as usual with Sufjan, after listening to it a few times it develops into something more expansive and layered. I love the unapologetic positivity of it, especially as it’s such a contrast to the dejection that characterizes so many of his songs. I also love the subtle synths. Synths can be sharp and cold, but on this song they are warm and glowing, which suits his style of singing.

4 | Chai | Wintime
A kaleidoscope of effervescent pop. And strangely the song that makes me want to dance like no other song this year.

5 | The Black Keys | Eagle Birds
Like most people these days, I don't like a lot of guitar rock. But this stomping piece of garage rock is a welcome exception. And it's nice that it reminds me a bit of T. Rex.

6 | Andrew Bird | Sisyphus
Andrew Bird has been on my radar for a while, but I didn't expect him to surprise me with an indie folk tune that made me wish I was back in 2008. Some glorious whistling too.

7 | Jessie Ware | Adore You
Speaking of flashbacks, I haven't liked deep house this much since the 1990s. It's an electronic style that suits Jessie's vocals very nicely. And I guess if I'm honest, my appreciation of the song is helped by being a bit of a romantic dreamer.

8 | Kaiser Chiefs | Record Collection
This is one of a few songs that I discovered through the AMF Weekly Chart. I didn't expect too much when I decided to give the song a listen after seeing it doing well in that chart, but I ended up being very pleasantly surprised that Kaiser Chiefs could still release such an anthemic tune, this time by blending indie and synth pop.

9 | Ibibio Sound Machine | Tell Me (Doko Mien)
Ibibio Sound Machine are a band who showcase an eclectic mix of Western and African dance music on all their albums. This title track from their latest album is a prime example of that. Flavourful, groove-driven electro afro-funk. Nice.

10 | Cage the Elephant | Social Cues
This sounds like it should've been MGMT's follow-up single after their Oracular Spectacular album. Luckily Cage the Elephant manage to make it sound like a fresh 2019 track.

11 | Little Simz feat. Cleo Sol | Selfish
Smooth and soulful… with just the right amount of punch.

12 | Skepta | Bullet From a Gun
Grime meets melancholic synths and laid-back techno. It's a sound that sits very comfortably with me.

13 | Aldous Harding | The Barrel
There's quite a lot of mellow contemporary folk songs that I enjoy listening to. But there's something unique about the way this song highlights interesting musical and vocal changes and makes me pay close attention to them.

14 | Katie Toupin | Magnetic Moves
A pop rock song that sounded a little trivial to me at first, but now I keep humming it on my way to work and can't seem to get it out of my head.

15 | James Blake feat. Rosalía | Barefoot in the Park
I think both James Blake and Rosalía have a sense of vulnerability that gel together in a dreamlike, intimate way on this song.

16 | Lana Del Rey | Hope Is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me to Have - But I Have It
Something that has stood in the way of me really feeling a connection with Lana Del Rey's music is the production of her songs. But on this song, the simple arrangement of piano and vocals complements her voice beautifully and I definitely feel a connection.

17 | Susanna and the Brotherhood of Our Lady | Garden of Earthly Delights
It's a song from an album inspired by the paintings of 15th century Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch, and it's another lovely example of the union between delicate piano music and haunting vocals.

18 | Mike Posner | January 11th, 2017
A touching song about the day that Mike Posner's father died. It's a song that resonates with me deeply, not least because I sense a resemblance in character between his dad and my own dad who died a couple of years ago.

19 | Maverick Sabre | Drifting
It's a song that has a groove that's both easy-going and rich. The vocals remind me a bit of Elbow, and the beat is not unlike something by the Beastie Boys - just more relaxed.

20 | Conan Osíris | Telemóveis
An eclectic track that didn't make it to the final of this year's Eurovision Song Contest but should've won the whole damn thing. It contains Portuguese fado, frantic Angolan kuduro, pop, hip-hop, and has a splatter of Japanese influences on top of all of that. My kind of eccentric.

21 | Julia Jacklin | Comfort
It's a song that's full of yearning, and it seems to be about letting go of someone you cared for deeply and the emotional impact that follows. It's also a song that resonates with me during (thankfully decreasing) times of feeling low: "I'll be okay, I'll be alright, I'll get well soon, sleep through the night."

22 | Leo "Bud" Welch | Don't Let the Devil Ride
Gritty but cool gospel blues.

23 | Weyes Blood | Andromeda
I feel that I should like Weyes Blood's music more than I do, especially her album Titanic Rising with its lush soundscape that's intended to wrap you in a blanket of unearthly calm (her voice reminding me of Karen Carpenter should also be a very good thing). Fortunately this song keeps growing on me, so maybe I'm getting closer to feeling that proper connection.

24 | Constantinople and Ablaye Cissoko | Denkilo
A hypnotic blend of entrancing vocals and the kora (a string instrument used in West African music). It's the closest I've come to finding something similar to one of my favourite African songs: "Tadieu Bone" by Ismaël Lô.

25 | slowthai | Doorman
I never thought I'd experience a year when British rap outperformed American rap, but with impressive releases by the likes of Little Simz, Dave, slowthai and Skepta, 2019 might be that year - that said, the year is far from over. "Doorman" is one of my favourite songs of this renaissance in UK rap.

...will keep us together.

That new Haim song "Summer Girl" is really good, but it's infuriatingly similar to "Walk on the Wild Side". I get having a sax like the song, and having a similar instrumentation, subdued vocals, and general "mood", but did they really have to do the "doo doo doo"s like the song too? Can't decide if I like the song because of itself or because I like Lou Reed.

Per Wikipedia:

"She [Dianelle Haim] asked friend and musician Rostam Batmanglij for help, and he wrote a saxophone part for the song. After he and Haim thought the melody sounded like "Walk on the Wild Side" by Lou Reed, he added bass guitar effects that mimicked the sound of the track. Haim then brought the song to Rechtshaid, who added final effects to the song."

And:

"Songwriter(s): Alana Haim, Ariel Rechtshaid, Danielle Haim, Este Haim, Lou Reed, Rostam Batmanglij"

Too be honest, I personally don't really hear too much WotWS in it. At least not in the melody, or vocals as a whole.

Seconded.
I wish I took your recommendation sooner. I just heard it for the first time, and it's immediately my song of the year, and I think it's one of the greatest songs of all time. I haven't had that kind of initial reaction to anything in a long time. That vocal performance is breathtaking.

It's not really so much the melody or the vocals that sound like Lou Reed's song as it is the general atmosphere, which I think bothers me a bit more than just a straightforward jacking of a single element of the song. Like, Purple Mountains' (RIP) "All My Happiness is Gone" has basically the same exact melody during the chorus as "I Melt With You" does during its chorus, but that doesn't really get on my nerves or anything.

Wow, this was an unexpected post! But I’m really glad you enjoyed listening to the music on my list, Honorio. For the first time in many years, I’m listening to new music and making my list as the year goes on, rather than waiting for critics’ year-end lists to start exploring songs and albums. By doing that, I’m giving myself more time to look for music that I might like and I feel less rushed.

Considering the big overlap in our taste in music, I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that you would like most of the songs on my list. And how wonderful that those songs are now tied to the beatiful landscapes you saw on your holiday. From personal experience, I know what a good feeling it is to discover (or re-discover) music while on holiday and to associate songs with memories of a specific place and time.

Praia das Catedrais looks amazing – yet another part of Spain that looks well worth a visit! When I clicked on the link you posted and watched the video, I was surprised that they chose to play Celtic folk music in the background. But then I read that the traditional music from that region (Galicia) owes its roots to ancient Celtic history, which explains the similarity in sound to Irish, Scottish and Welsh folk music. So what I heard was actually Galician folk music. It caused me to listen to a few songs in that genre. The song I enjoyed listening to the most was “Muiñeira do Areal” by Milladoiro.

Anyway, you mentioned in another thread that you plan to listen to a lot of music from the 2010s next year. I’m looking forward to your lists.

Yes, the original folk music of the North of Spain (especially in Galicia but also in Asturias, Cantabria or the Basque country), as well as in French Britanny and North of Portugal, has a strong content of Celtic music because of a common ancient history. Glad you liked some of these songs, another good song by Milladoiro (the most important Galician folk band) is "Brincadeiro."

Charli XCX's last two singles, Gone (with Christine and the Queens) and Cross You Out (with Sky Ferreira) are two of her best career singles. She really has a knack for choosing great artists to collaborate with and getting the most out of them. Her upcoming album is one of my most anticipated this fall, though I guess I've already heard a lot of it.

Separately, Jenny Hval's new single High Alice might be the best standalone song I've heard from her. With its accessible structure and catchy drum beat, it certainly signals a different direction for her.

No runaway leader this year but interestingly the number 1 song for 2017 and 2018 (Humble and This Is America) ended up taking the AM top spot at year end.
Thanks for compiling this again this year, ColmD! It's always my favorite mid-year report!

I don't think Old Town Remix is going to hold the lead at year end because I think(/hope) it performs poorly on the non-American lists. I could see it doing quite well on the Pazz and Jop poll though.

Out of the songs that made the mid-year report, Bad Guy seems to be the one that could top the year-end list to me.

Not sure actually. Think I might prefer simplicity of FTA. Anyway time for the rest of the album. Love what I've heard so far. Could it be as good as last one?

Here's how my list is shaping up eight months into 2019. The domination by women is astonishing - 19 of my top 20 are by women or have female vocalists! This has been an ongoing trend over the second half of this decade, but this year, the women have almost completely taken over.

Risers over the last month have been Venice (a perfect indie rock song; reminiscent of Men I Trust's Tailwhip), High Alice (only one more week until the new album!), Paramour (music video of the year), and Gone (only two more weeks until the new album!).

1 | Weyes Blood | Movies
2 | Sharon Van Etten | Jupiter 4
3 | Hatchie | Stay With Me
4 | Magdelena Bay | Venice
5 | Carly Rae Jepsen | Want You in My Room
6 | Jenny Hval | High Alice
7 | Aldous Harding | The Barrel
8 | Georgia | About Work the Dancefloor
9 | Anna Meredith | Paramour

12 | Skepta | Bullet From a Gun
13 | The Comet is Coming | Blood of the Past (feat. Kate Tempest)
14 | Sky Ferreira | Downhill Lullaby
15 | Clairo | Bags
16 | Charli XCX | Gone (feat. Christine & The Queens)
17 | Holly Herndon | Eternal
18 | Nilufer Yanya | Baby Blu
19 | Carly Rae Jepsen | Julien
20 | FKA Twigs | Cellophane
21 | Denzel Curry | RICKY
22 | Lil Nas X | Old Town Road (feat. Billy Ray Cyrus)

The two absolute standouts from this year in my opinion aren't yet on albums -

Cellophane by FKA Twigs - surprised this hasnt got more attention to be honest given her being an already established artist. Definitely not her most immediate song but after a few listens i think it is probably my favorite of hers.

Sunglasses by Black Country, New Road - new british band that's only released a couple of singles. One of the most unique tracks i've heard this year; it's of a similar genre to Black Midi, but in my opinion more interesting with a Sigur Ros/Slint post rock influence in the first half before turning into a jagged art punk type thing. I would definitely recommend giving it a listen, especially if you liked Black Midi (I found it more accessible than Black Midi because the vocals are less weird)

Both are among my tunes of the year- Cellophane did get some buzz on here on release and rightly so, the sound of fka twigs elegantly unravelling like she does in the song's video.

I'm with you on the Black Country, New Road track based on what I've heard of Black Midi, especially the less wilfully odd vocals compared to BM. I'd say lyrically, Sunglasses is this sprawling, growling broadside against modern conformity in the same vein as a more focused Sleaford Mods or a more sarcastic Idles. With some discordant sax thrown in, it all makes for a heady mix!
All I got inside is vacancy!

Ehh, it’s okay, but it feels like they’re trying to reclaim the magic that was on albums such as Call The Doctor, Dig Me Out, The Woods, etc.

Nothing wrong with that of course, and I gotta say it is one of the better songs the band has released this decade.

Rosalia ft. J Balvin & El Guincho - Con Altura
Danny Brown - Dirty Laundry
Charli XCX ft. Christine And The Queens - Gone
Solange ft. Playboi Carti - Almeda
James Blake ft. Travis Scott & Metro Boomin - Mile High
Tyler, The Creator ft. Playboi Carti - EARFQUAKE
Chris Brown ft. Drake - No Guidance
Col3trane ft. FKJ - Perfect Timing

Oh, and I can't forget about what might be the most notorious unreleased track of the decade - Pissy Pamper, by Young Nudy and Playboi Carti.

Is the version of "Tailwhip" on the album any different than the one released as a single two years ago?

I think slightly, but not greatly. Too good not to include again (as I think it still qualifies for end of year list).
