It’s fine if you don’t like them, but when you call something pretentious you’re basically implying anyone who likes them is lying to come off as smart.

I don’t understand how you can be considered “pretentious” for liking a certain artist. Big Thief are one of my favorite bands, and although I understand why people may consider them “boring”, one of the reasons why I and many others love them is due to the gorgeous energy they bring to their music, bringing a modern and almost magical approach to what could be considered “folk” music. In my opinion, U.F.O.F. ranks side by side with Let England Shake as the best folk rock album of the decade. Their praise is undoubtedly deserved.

Not even the fans so much as the critics cause I’m noticing it’s liked here but not universally adored like they way critics are praising it just by the fact i see it ranked here but not like top 3 or scoring in the high 80s and 90s. But in this day and age you form a indie folk band and move them over to Brooklyn to sign with 4ad, than the thick hipster beards....you know...what do you expect? Comes with the territory. Seattle and Manchester probably got a little heat here and there in the 80s and early 90s but it’s not like those band purposely moved there to attempt to make it big and be seen. That’s kind of what bothers me. Brooklyn is like an indie scenesters version of Hollywood which is kind of what defeats the whole purpose of being independent.

Well, in the aftermath of all this Big Thief discussion - they just announced they're dropping a SECOND album before the end of 2019. I for one could not be more excited, especially with the first single out today. Sounds like this will be the heavier counterpart to U.F.O.F.'s more subdued sound.

Agreed with everything you said there. Not is absolutely superb, and I can hardly contain my excitement for the album they’ll be dropping on October 11th. This is proving to be a hell of a year for music :happy-partydance: :music-rockon:

Sleater-Kinney: The Center Won't Hold

Another solid SK album. I'm not ready to say it's one of my favorites from them, but it's got some great tracks, such as the title track and "Restless." I think the conception that St. Vincent would turn SK into an electronic band was a little overblown, but you can definitely hear the influence.

I enjoy the new Sleater-Kinney album, but it kind of sounds like St. Vincent minus the guitar theatrics and killer hooks.

I think I’d give it a 7/10 or so.

I recently listened to Young Thug's So Much Fun and it definitely makes my list. He is a weird artist, he rarely makes the best music in the world but he rarley makes bad music. Because of that, I feel like with every release he gets slightly better and is slowly becoming one of the best artists in the hip hop world today.

1. Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

2. Tyla Yaweh - Heart Full of Rage

3. Lil Nas X - 7 EP

4. Bad Religion - Age Of Unreason

5. Young Thug - So Much Fun

6. The Raconteurs - Help Me Stranger

7. Thom Yorke - ANIMA

8. Juice WRLD - Death Race For Love

The new S-K will probably be in my year end top ten just by being a solid S-K album. But it’s not a first tier album for them.

Ty Segall - First Taste and Josephine Wiggs - We Fall are rocketing up my list.

Sleater-Kinney are one of my favorite bands ever. One of the most important bands ever, in my opinion. They will always be defied by their willingness to knock down barriers in their music, and their explosive energy as well. That’s what Sleater-Kinney means to me, and to many others.

On The Center Won’t Hold, they’ve essentially lost their explosive energy. Their punk euphoria was one of the things I loved about them, and it’s not really there on this record. While the left-leaning politics might fit in with the times, it doesn’t hit different on this album, the way it did on No Cities To Love, or even going back to Call The Doctor or Dig Me Out, for example. I hate to say something bad about this band, since they’ve always been a personal favorite, but I think I can echo one of the comments above when they say it’s pretty much a minimalist St. Vincent record. This is Sleater-Kinney’s first underwhelming album, but all great musical runs end eventually. You can’t really blame them.

I’m not really liking the new Bon Iver either. I could go on for ages about how I think Vernon’s declined since For Emma, but that’s a story for another day :?

I see the less explosiveness as a natural evolution in style rather than something necessarily missing.

It’s not a top tier work but it’s not nearly as big a drop off as, say, Wilco’s last few.

No words about the new Blanck Mass album, where are my fellow World Eater fans ?

Animated Violence Mild is pretty great, not as good as said World Eater but still easily one of my favorite of the year so far, starting with 2 great bangers.
On the complete opposite side of Blanck Mass brutal, alienating world, I find Helado Negro's This Is How You Smile to be wonderfully warm and comforting, well deserving of its title.

Not a lot of albums I really enjoy this year so far, top 10 is fairly decent though :

1) Helado Negro - This Is How You Smile
2) Blanck Mass - Animated Violence Mild
3) RAP - EXPORT
4) DAVE - Psychodrama
5) PUP - Morbid Stuff
6) William Basinski - On Time Out of Time
7) Joni Void - Mise en Abyme
8) Malibu Ken - Malibu Ken
9) Fennesz - Agora
10) Fontaines D.C. - Dogrel

Gotta give a nod to the surprisingly enjoyable Igor, to Slipknot and the Chemical Brothers for exceeding by far my expectations from them, and The Center Won't Hold might sneak in this top 10 on the strength of its best track once the feeling of disappointment fades away.

Can we end the year, please? I think we don't really need the months September to December. We have too many albums already! It seems like every artist I loved in the past few years has put out an album, mostly to great or at least solid reviews. And almost everyone who hasn't done anything this year has an album planned. How do people expect me to keep up? I half expect even slow-workers Joanna Newsom and Fiona Apple to announce a new release any time now (probably on the same day), just to make things more difficult on me.

Look, I'm always bad in keeping up with new releases. Part it is because I dedicate myself fully to that Moderately Acclaimed Album game here on this forum; part because I also want to listen to a lot of older stuff; part because my time is limited, especially for full albums. But this year is ridiculous. Of course it happens at the end of the decade, but at the moment I'm not sure if dedicating my time to any kind of decade list when 2019 is overwhelming me is in any way realistic.

Despair!

I haven't dug in too much for 2019 releases as I've been mostly listening based on the 80s poll and a neon pop project I started at RYM. That said, here's how I'd rank the albums I've heard from 2019 so far:

All-time great:

1. Prince - Originals

Awesome:

2. Jenny Wilson - TRAUMA
3. Jai Paul - Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones) (how come I only heard this?! First time I've heard a newish artist who reminds me a bit of Prince!)

Very good:

4. Allie X - Super Sunset (Analog)

Good:

5. Lizzo - Cuz I Love You
6. Tyler, the Creator - Igor

Pretty good:

7. Carly Rae Jepsen - Dedicated
8. Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
9. Lana Del Rey - Norman Fucking Rockwell

Mixed:

10. Madonna - Madame X

Looking forward to Bat for Lashes - I think it's going to be awesome based on the 4 songs that are already out.

I’m really on the fence when it comes to the new LDR album. I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with her work, so I guess i’m not suprised (I do love Ultraviolence, and her well-known songs like Video Games, Summertime Sadness, and Venice Bitch are fantastic). I don’t know if I really like or hate NFR yet, but I guess times gonna tell.

I posted a list a while back which contained the 2019 albums I was enjoying the most so far, and i’ve added seven albums to that list which I’ve grown to love too. In any case here’s my unranked list.

thank u, next - Ariana Grande
When I Get Home - Solange
U.F.O.F. - Big Thief
WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? - Billie Eilish
Bandana - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
IGOR - Tyler, The Creator
PUNK - Chai
It’s Real - Ex Hex
Grey Area - Little Simz
Designer - Aldous Harding
Angel’s Pulse - Blood Orange
Malibu Ken - Malibu Ken
Injury Reserve - Injury Reserve
Anak Ko - Jay Som
Dogrel - Fontaines D.C.
Patience - Mannequin Pussy
Eve - Rapsody
Sinner: KDJ-48 - Moodymann
Tears Of Joy - Mike

Rob wrote: Sat Aug 31, 2019 2:01 pm Can we end the year, please?

Despair!
Actually, I did a little exercise comparing AOTY 2018 and AOTY 2019.
AOTY2018 had 352 albums with a rating equal or over 75/100.
AOTY2019, for the first three quarters has "only" 252 albums, which amounts to 315 at the end of the year if you extrapolate.

So...unless the last three months is awash with great albums, AOTY seems to think that 2018 was a better year :)

Another LDR album I guess I don’t get. It’s totally lacking in energy, the beats are lifeless and simplistic and the vocal performance never emotionally connects with the sometimes cringe inducingly cliched lyrics. Like all the downside of mainstream pop without the fun singability.

I totally agree. Have enjoyed her work in the past too, but this might be her magnum opus.

Well shit, like Nick said, it looks like NFR is going to be the critics' AOTY for 2019. There seems to be so much critical consensus towards praise of this album. Guess i'm gonna have to take another listen to see what the hype is about.

Agreed. This album is definitely her most cohesive, and her pulling in Jack Antonoff for production was a great move. Excited to see where this lands on the AOTY lists!

Thought I'd make an updated top 25 now that we're two thirds of the way through the year. Fully expect these to shift around quite a bit on their own, not to mention all the upcoming releases by Angel Olsen, M83, Julien Baker, Big Thief (again!), and possibly... Mr. West?

2. Lady Lamb - Even in the Tremor
3. William Tyler - Goes West
4. Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride
5. Jay Som - Anak Ko
6. The National - I Am Easy to Find
7. Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
8. FIDLAR - Almost Free
9. Faye Webster - Atlanta Millionaire’s Club
10. Flying Lotus - Flamagra
11. Tyler, the Creator - IGOR
12. Sharon Van Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow
13. Taylor Swift - Lover
14. Norah Jones - Begin Again
15. Carly Rae Jepsen - Dedicated
16. Big Thief - U.F.O.F.
17. Karen O and Danger Mouse - Lux Prima
18. Maggie Rogers - Heard It in a Past Life

As a longtime fan of LDR, I'm glad to see her finally getting her due. And it's a great album with a lot of standout songs, but I don't feel like she's the sure thing for AOTY yet. To me, it seems like a three way race between LDR, Big Thief and Billie Eilish.

I like NFR! a lot and it will certainly place well in my AOTY list, but I can't help but thinking how much replay value a 67 minute album comprised almost entirely of ballads will have in the long run. Everything is impeccably written and played, and the highlights truly are great, but I just question how much I'll ever really want to listen to it. I agree with others that it will clean up at end-of-year awards time.

I am on board AMF's Blanck Mass train now! I agree with your take on Animated Violence Mild on first listen.

Of the albums released so far this year, I think the critics’ top 3 will be Lana Del Rey at #1, followed by Big Thief or Weyes Blood at 2 or 3 (unsure of the order). I see Billie Eilish hovering around the lower reaches of the top 10. She’s only at 17 on the latest MCCh (not that the chart perfectly correlated with the AOTY list), and I’m not sure how well her style of music will appeal to the non-US critics.

After a couple of more listens, i've made up my mind on Norman Fucking Rockwell. I really, really don't like it.

If this album just contained the first ten tracks, then it would be a solid 7/10. I actually quite enjoyed some of the songs, in all honesty. "Mariners Apartment Complex", "Venice Bitch", "Cinnamon Girl", and "The Next Best American Record" are fantastic.

However my issues lie in the aesthetic Lana Del Ray is trying to present on here. One of the issues I always had with her music was that her songs just felt like American noir with sugar all over it, and this album certainly feels that way. I could write an entire book talking about how overhyped this album is, but I don't see the point. So i'll just keep it simple. The production for the most part is weak, inconsistent, and lifeless. The lyricism is good at times, but the pretentious romanticism that has always defied Del Ray is still there. I really don't know how to explain it, but this album just feels generic and unimaginative to me. The instrumentation and lyrics are bad enough that they just become utterly cringy.

I don't understand how people are considering this to be a "masterpiece", but then again I don't speak for the record-buying public or the critical community. But I really think this is one of the most overrated albums of the last few years. Maybe i'm being too harsh, but i'll be damned if this album is remembered as a "classic" twenty years from now.

Well, Lana Del Rey is a lot lower on MCCh than Eilish, so that shouldn't be that big a factor. Eilish has a certain it-factor that is going to help. She is somewhat the new artist of the year. And some people hate Lana Del Rey with a passion; they always have. I don't know what it is, but there is something that rubs certain people the wrong way about Del Rey specifically; see also Cold Butterfly above. I've always thought that this has held her back critically up til now. Things are looking up, but she still seems to be able to deeply annoy people, though I always have a hard time knowing why exactly. I can't see her getting to number one.

In this discussion Igor shouldn't be underestimated. It is the most respected hiphop release of the year and that is a big factor in the current musical climate. But I can actually see Eilish winning this.

I think you’re right on Igor. That could be a top 5 album come AOTY time.

As for Del Rey and MCCh, her score right now is deflated because the chart updated just a day after the album’s release (so it doesn’t factor in scores like Pitchfork’s 9.4/10). Right now it’s sitting at 76.3 with 11 reviews on MCCh. Metacritic alone is reporting 87 with 22 reviews. I’d expect its ranking to shoot up when the chart updates in mid-September.

As if the next few months weren't already stacked with new releases, Swans announced a surprise new album out on October 25th, with a new single out today. I'm excited that the album features several collaborations with Anna von Hausswolff and her sister -- there could hardly be a better match for Swans. It's great that it slotted in right before the end of the decade, giving the band five 2010s albums. I hope this is miles better than 2016's The Glowing Man, which was among the bigger disappointments for me in recent years.

As much as I love IGOR, Bandana feels like the rap album that will get the most acclaim come year-end time. Eilish’s album is brilliant, but sadly I think it will suffer from the FutureSex/LoveSounds effect. Tons of publications will keep it off their lists just because it’s a megaselling pop album created by a superstar, but five or the years down the road you’ll see that album skyrocketing in critical acclaim (also see Viva La Vida, 21, and Take Care for example).

As things stand Bandana will likely place in the top 10, but I think Igor has the upper hand, for being more a product of the zeitgeist and having a higher profile.

I also think Eilish will do better than Viva la Vida, Futuresex, etc. because it seems more of announcement of something and someone new, even if it is only a minor cultural shift. None of the others had that.

Prince - Originals Because it's the best Prince album since 1990 and almost all is perfect. 10/10

The last Andrew Bird album (My Finest Work Yet) is exceptional. The production is very good. Great and beautiful songs. The best Sufjan Stevens album since Chicago. ALL the songs are all little jewels. 9/10
Fat White Family - Serfs Up! A mix between Prince and Leonard Cohen and MGMT can not be bda isn't it? 9/10

Yann Tiersen - All makes a great comeback to his roots, a mixture of classic Tiersen, sometimes Max Richter. Very sensitive, very handsome. 8/10
The Dandy Warhols - Why you so crazy A band that I have always loved for its ability to create memorable songs... they haven't changed and it's still as good as ever. 8/10
Stephen Malkmus - Groove Denied A strange mixed technoïdo pop album, very well produced. 8/10
Tiwayo - The Gypsy Soul Of Tiwayo I'm surprised I like this album but, it's simply a very good effort with lot of meomorable melodies. 8/10

Billie Eilish also has the advantage of poptimism on her side. The critics have become much more accepting of pop music in the past few years, something that Timberlake, Coldplay, and Adele didn’t have on their side when they released their albums.

IGOR is incredibly popular, more modern sounding than Bandana, and represents a coronation of sorts for Tyler the Creator. I'd wager a lot that it outperforms Bandana come EOY time, likely in the top 5 (I like both albums personally).

My guess is that Eilish ends up within a couple places of 10 either way. She has Ariana Grande, Carly, and (hopefully) Charli XCX to compete with on the pop side.
