Biggest Fan Songs - September 2019

Post by Rob »

Welcome to the September 2019 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.

There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.

Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.

You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

Yo La Tengo - One PM Again 8 A song to roll out your bed on a Sunday afternoon to and that's where I'm at just now, so it's my soundtrack! From what I could gather, it's a paean to simple pleasures.

Certainly nothing offensive here, but nothing very exciting either. Innocuous item that gets a 4 (okay) on my scale.

Yo La Tengo - One PM Again 7.5/10

Great song with nice guitars (including a beautiful pedal steel part), the folky side of YLT, reminiscent of the Velvet Underground.
The vocals are the YLT signature, but I've always had a slight reservation about them (the singer sings even ess that Lou Reed). But a great athmosphere

Was surprised since I've usually been turned off by YLT. Maybe something's finally clicked. Agree with the VU comment above, but it also sounds like an upbeat The National to me, with the vocals somewhere between Lou Reed and Matt Berninger.

Anyway, it's nice, and sounds like waking up at 1pm feels.

You know, I'm thinking that the first song of each new month should automatically be a Himey :-)

interesting song, beautiful gap between this deep and warm voice and this light music 7/10

235. George Thorogood and the Destroyers – Bad to the Bone
difficult to vote for a song like that. Too close to his inspiration to be original. This is obviously not bad, but I will abstain from voting. ?/10

George Thorogood and the Destroyers – Bad to the Bone: 7
Nobody can call this take on the Muddy Waters sound original, but the very 80's testosteron gives it some character of its own. Plus the song simply rocks. It is macho cheese at it's silliest, but more importantly, it's fun.

George Thorogood and the Destroyers - Bad To The Bone - 4

The song isn't say bad but it lacks some key things. It is not original as it is so close to the original and not only that, the song has been ruined more and more overtime I hear it in a macho movie. I'm surprised more people didn't vote for it though considering it is very popular.

The next song ranks on AM at #2002. It is also one of four songs on my master list with this title:

236. Happy Mondays – Hallelujah (Paul Oakenfold - Club Mix)
Year: 1989
EP: Hallelujah
Biggest Fan: Akhenaten (unranked)
* There seem to be only remixes around. The Club Mix by Paul Oakenfold is very popular and seems to be the go-to version. The only version I could find that is not specifically mentioned to be a remix is one from a 2005 compilation, but its length over 8 minutes suggests a remix too. Akhenaten made no specific mention of any version, so unless he says otherwise we’ll go with the Club Mix, as that is by far the most famous cut.

Two great ones in a row:

Happy Mondays - Hallulujah: 8
One of the better dance tracks here. Very dynamic, which I sometimes feel is lacking in the genre. I think it helps that it is still a Happy Mondays track. They have a ramshackle style that is always party ready and translates well to a more modern dance floor .

Laura Nyro – Gibsom Street: 8
I know and even get why people don't like this, but to me this is very powerful. The way she sings is initially too much, but then you listen to her lyrics and it all adds up to some performance on another plane of existence. I heard the album Eli and the Thirteenth Confession quite a lot, but never the rest of her discography. It's about time.

George Thorogood & the Destroyers - Bad to the Bone 5.5 Mixed feelings. I love blues but not blues with such a 80's rocky sound (I have to say that much of the -4.5 points are for the drums sound that are awful to my ears, so much reverb). And as said above, it's too far from the Muddy Waters inspirations. Some good guitar parts though, and also the 5.5 points are nostalgia : I used to hear that song on the radio when I was a teenager (that means long ago :D )

Happy Mondays - Hallelujah 3.5/10 : I like the Gregorian chant sample in the beggining and in the end (and maybe the guitars in the end), but it's probably all that I like about that song. Not my cup of tea.

Laura Nyro - Gibsom Street 6.5/10 Pretty good song, a bit twisted

236. Laura Nyro – Gibsom Street - 5. Not really fascinating, she has quite a good voice, but aside from it, not much to chew on.
235. Happy Mondays - Hallelujah - 9 - a firm favorite, reminds me of the good old 90s !
234. George Thorogood & the Destroyers - Bad to the Bone - 7 - The only version I knew...and quite a good one.
234. Yo La Tengo – One PM Again: 8 - always liked YLT's songs.

One song I'd like to see the back of, one I know and love, one I'd like to get to know better:

George Thorogood and the Destroyers - Bad to the Bone 3 The rhythm sounds like every blues number ever, the playing is lumpen and whatever fun can be had from the hammy singing has been diminished by overexposure.

Happy Mondays - Hallelujah (Paul Oakenfold and Andrew Weatherall Club Mix) 8 Lairy, one-dimensional...and iconic! Oakenfold's remixes of the Mondays were the point where rock met rave shortly after the band met ecstasy but they still sound trippy and fresh. The same can't fully be said for the original (on the Madchester EP and on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u43h96s28A), with its slap bass touches and Phil Collins-style falling-down-the-stairs drumming, or the shorter mix with Kirsty MacColl, who isn't given a great deal to do. All three versions are essentially the same song at their core, though.

Laura Nyro - Gibsom Street 8 Only song by her I'm familiar with is Stoned Soul Picnic, which is a 10, but this whips up the atmosphere of the rough side of town, her wailing and the orchestral stabs raising the tension. I didn't catch the lyrics at first listen but I heard enough to want to revisit the track.
All I got inside is vacancy!

Yo La Tengo | One PM Again | 4
George Thorogood and the Destroyers | Bad to the Bone | 6
Happy Mondays | Hallelujah | 2
Laura Nyro | Gibsom Street | 4

Yo La Tengo- Vocal delivery reminds me a bit of Leonard Cohen but I'm not sure why they're stuffed back in the mix. It could possibly grow on me over time.
Happy Mondays- Like some of their other material but this didn't do much for me.
Laura Nyro-Like her voice. Like some of her other tunes ("Stoned Soul Picnic" and "Sweet Blindness"). Lots of drama to the arrangements but it felt like sound and fury...not really much of a lyric it's hung on.
George Thorogood- I don't care that much about how "original" the sound is but I have heard it a bit more often than I'd care to which keeps it from bring higher. Nice straight ahead bluesy rocker.

I feel like I keep being pretty generous with my votes, but genuinely I also just think a lot of it is good. This is one such example - a great jam.
237. Laura Nyro – Gibsom Street - 6
Great voice, and I like the sparse arrangement.
238. Chuck Person – A3 - 3
Turns out this is the originator of vapourwave - I can never tell if that genre is legit or just a meme. This is hampered by its kind of irritating vocals in the second half, and also me just not being all that into vapourwave.
