I know it is very early but Post Malone’s new album Hollywood’s Bleeding is a great album. The poppier side of the album may scare away many listeners and there is no doubt this album is mainstream. But as usual, Post Malone bends genres on his songs. His debut, Stoney, had a lot of genre bending but Hollywood’s Bleeding takes that concept and executes it better. And Beerbongs & Bentleys is less diverse but the quality is more consistent. Hollywood’s Bleeding is the best of both worlds. His song with Ozzy is likely my favorite song of the year. Even if critics don’t like the album, Post seemed to have a great time making it, I had a great time listening to it, and in the end it was an enjoyable listen.

Wish I liked their new album as much as notbrianeno seems to. It's pretty good but it won't likely make my EoY. Despite how I feel about it, I do think Xiu Xiu are going through their best album run since their mid-00s Fabulous Muscles era. Whether you enjoy their new album or not, you should also check out 2017's Forget and their 2016 Twin Peaks cover album too.

It's solid release and is very worthy of Power's oeuvre. I do prefer World Eater and more controversially Dumb Flesh but Animated Violence Mild definetly wasn't a letdown.

A bitter, licorice lozenge of an album (similar to EXORCISM in that regard), but one that I treasure. Get ready for lots of absurdist, gory Francis Bacon-inspired lyrics and gnostic/pagan imagery about reclaiming battered feminine and queer bodies

After a few listens I can say that Post Malone dominates my taste for this year with his album Hollywood’s Bleeding. Also I have grown a bit tired of Lil Nas X now.

1. Post Malone - Hollywood’s Bleeding

2. Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

3. Tyla Yaweh - Heart Full of Rage

4. Young Thug - So Much Fun

5. Bad Religion - Age Of Unreason

6. Lil Nas X - 7 EP

7. The Raconteurs - Help Me Stranger

8. Thom Yorke - ANIMA

9. Juice WRLD - Death Race For Love

10. Chase Atlantic - PHASES

It is nice to see someone else appreciating Lil Nas X. Also I hope the new Kanye album will make my list.

Today is probably my favorite day of the year so far for new album releases, with new Men I Trust, Jenny Hval, and Charli XCX all coming out. I've heard enough singles from all three to know I'll like them -- can't wait to dig in!

NFR seems like the big divisive album this year.

To me it’s as lyrically vapid as dance pop but without the balancing benefit of being able to dance.

Like she’s trying super hard to make these deep statements about male/female relationships and it’s only highlighting the cliche shallowness.

And she always sounds like she just woke up and hasn’t had her coffee yet.

Thoughts on these three albums:

Jenny Hval - The Practice of Love: This is my favorite Jenny Hval album by quite a bit, and an AOTY contender. The mix of her usual ethereal avant garde style with house and disco beats is a brilliant match, and the production sounds quite a bit crisper and more expensive than anything she's done previously. Highly recommended for fans of Weyes Blood and Julia Holter, and it's a perfect entry into Hval's work for anyone who hasn't heard her before.

Charli XCX - Charli: It's difficult to evaluate the album as nearly half of the songs were available as singles for varying amounts of time before its release. It's definitely worth a list given the ridiculous amount of talented collaborators (Sky Ferreira, Christine and the Queens, Clairo, Troye Sivian, Kim Petras) and the presence of outstanding singles like Gone and 1999, but the mix of more commercial tracks like those with experimental PCMusic-produced tracks like Click and Shake It makes the album more of a grab bag than a cohesive body of work like Pop 2. There was a great 10-song tracklist somewhere in these 15 songs, but this isn't quite it, though it'll still be an EOY player for me.

Men I Trust - Oncle Jazz: This is an impressive self-released album that'll almost certainly please anyone who likes the band's singles. Like Charli, this album features many songs that have previously been released, though those songs appear to have been remixed or rerecorded to better fit this album's downtempo, chilled out style. It won't be for everybody, but those who like the band's dreamy vibe will find a lot to like.

Now on to the JPEGMAFIA and Alex G releases that also came out last Friday!

Any upcoming releases planned for this December? :D

To be serious, London's Calling is good example of why publications should hold off releasing their lists so early. Rushed EoD lists (like Gorilla vs. Bear's) could have at least waited until the end of January. Most readers wouldn't have minded waiting.

From what I know, it would be enough to be better than any other Prince album outside of 1999. 1982 was his year!

Yeah, as much as I enjoy Gorilla vs Bear's recommendations, I see no reason why they couldn't wait until the end of the year. If an album they love is released in the last three months of 2019, are they really going to remember to include it in their best of the 2020s list? That said, the list's early timing didn't stop them from including two 2019 albums - Jai Paul and Lana Del Ray - in their top six.

Don't know if anyone's posted, but Chromatics surprise-dropped a new album, and it's not the long-anticipated Dear Tommy, it's called Closer to Grey. About to listen to it right after the new Angel Olsen. Also, between those two and the new Sturgill Simpson, it makes me laugh at critics already releasing end of decade lists.

So, if Jesus is King, and Kanye is 50% more influential than Jesus, Kanye must equal 3/2 of a King.

Which means Kings must throw 2/3 of an SNL tantrum.

New Wilco getting good reviews.

As a longtime fan of LDR, I'm glad to see her finally getting her due. And it's a great album with a lot of standout songs, but I don't feel like she's the sure thing for AOTY yet. To me, it seems like a three way race between LDR, Big Thief and Billie Eilish.
And just like that, it looks like she's been passed by Nick Cave and possibly Angel Olsen, too!

From my listening over the past three months:

1. Prince - Originals
Prince is simply the best comfort food. Put it on and you know you're going to get everything you want out of music.

2. Hobo Johnson - The Fall of Hobo Johnson
I really enjoyed this one. This guy manages to fuse folk, emo and hip-hop all in one package, all while having a very relatable personality.

3. Highwomen - Highwomen
Might be my token country album of the year, but whatever, this was very good music in general. Reminded me of ABBA (always a good thing, coming from me), with the excellent vocal harmonies, lyrical metaphors, and solid-as-steel songwriting.

4. Charli XCX - Charli
To me, this is the artistic peak (so far) of Charli's career. This is where Charli nails the midpoint between the catchiness and straightforwardness of Top 40 pop, and the adventure and experimentation of PC Music's glitchy, pitchy electronics. Beyond that, I am wowed by the unshakeable consistency of the songwriting here. I thought the Billie Eilish album was consistent, but this album takes consistency to the next level. Charli is the Teen Dream of 2019. So why isn't this the #1? It's because all of the songs are Strong 7's - nothing less, nothing more. None of them pull out of that very-good level to anything I would really hear on its own, save for maybe "Gone" or "1999." Also, I'm not a huge fan (though I finally "get" it) of her signature autotuned vocals.

5. Tyler, the Creator - Igor
This is the 2019 album that everyone can get behind. The lyrics are there for the lyric-heads, the pop sensibility is there for the pop-heads, the experimentation is there for that crowd, and a cool sound is there for the vibers.

6. Xiu Xiu - Girl With Basket of Fruit
I was waffling over this one, but I finally put it on here because I really enjoyed this one throughout, which is weird because Xiu Xiu's previous batch of new songs Forget was one of my least favorites of that year. I think it has to do with Jamie changing up his vocals. It also has to do with the insane banging beats on this new album. This album could climb up my list in the future.

Honorable Mentions:
Blu & Oh No - A Long Red Hot Los Angeles Night
Good rhymes, and very good beats. Listening to this, you really feel like you're on the dark streets, and your T-shirt is sticking to your back because it's so hot.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Bandana
Good rhymes, good beats, but the album dulled on me after first listen.

Danny Brown - Uknowhatimsayin¿
Danny is just a very solid artist, even when it feels like a more casual, less intense experience. This is comparable to DAMN. in a sense.

Various Artists - Kankyou Ongaku: 1980-1990 [compilation]
If you like ambient music, you cannot skip this one. This is great.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard - Infest the Rat's Nest
Solid thrash metal album.

Little Simz - Grey Area
Good stuff. There were a couple anime references, nice.

Goddang, since it hasn't been available on streaming, I still haven't heard that Slauson Malone!

Fantano's secret AOTY list?
Yes I am a huge fantanohead, but it's not blind love -- it's just that his taste and mine are very similar. I've tried stuff from this forum, and it's a lot more hit-and-miss. The only thing he likes that I am perplexed about is the post-punk stuff (and the hardcore/death metal stuff, but that's only because I've been too afraid to dive too deep).

I still don't get the love of this album. I've listened to it twice and it's just blah. I always give albums a chance by listening to it more often. Maybe something will grab me but not yet.

Yeah IGOR has worn down on me ever since I first listened to it, back when it first came out in May. Like it’s a good album and all, but from recent listening i’m not too impressed by it anymore. It’s still a consistent set of songs, just not as imaginative as I first believed it to be.

In The Morse Code Of Brake Lights is the most the Pornos have sounded like 2000-2005 since Twin Cinema.

I agree. I’m not a huge Tyler fan to begin with but in terms of my taste I would rather listen to the new Juice WRLD album than it. It isn’t bad but it is just bland and typical Tyler.

Is Igor more typical Tyler than Goblin? Those are the two albums I’ve heard and they’re so different I have no idea what his normal is.

Are there any big releases planned in December? I’d like to start my year end tournament at the start of December but I’m worried something will get left out that will belong in my decade tournament next year.

I have every reason to believe that Limp Bizkit are going to pull a Beyoncé and release their long-awaited, long-delayed Stampede of the Disco Elephants somewhere around Christmas, so stay tuned!

I’d say that has more to do with Tyler’s “evolution” or what not. In the beginning of his career, with Bastards and Goblin, his music was defined by a horrorcore style which was similar in a way to early Eminem. Today’s Tyler is a neo soul aficionado who takes chances and expands his sound with each release. I’d say that Wolf, Cherry Bomb and Flower Boy were really the crossroads between “old Tyler” and the more experimental stuff he’s putting out today - in hindsight, listening to those albums, you can hear the changing sounds in each release, as well as him moving away from the aggressive style he was known for at the beginning of his career.

I haven't had enough time to listen to most of these, but October seems like it was one of the more loaded album release months in recent memory. I liked / am interested in hearing these:
Nick Cave
Angel Olsen
Swans
Anna Meredith
Big Thief
Chromatics
Floating Points
Lightning Bolt
Richard Dawson
Michael Kiwanuka
Caroline Polachek

Surprised there aren't more people talking about some of these!

Yeah, it's already been a super-stacked year, and October put it over the top. I've been actively keeping up with new releases more than ever, so here are my current impressions of the above, where applicable...

Nick Cave - I know that Ghosteen has been a bit divisive (at least outside of critics' circles), but I do think this may be his masterpiece. This album gets to me emotionally like few others ever have, and I think the fact I'm a father has something very much to do with this. At times it connects in ways I would not prefer, but it is consistently both compelling and beautiful.

Angel Olsen - I have not been as big a fan of her prior releases, but this one stands out to me (I'm a sucker for orchestration, so no surprise I guess). That said, the first two tracks, which are outstanding, tower above the rest. Still a very good album.

Swans - Another strong album, and their best since To Be Kind, though not quite to that level and certainly not at the level of The Seer. The more mellow vibe is absolutely fine, though this is an album where the highlights really stand out from the rest (at least so far).

Anna Meredith - Freaking great, even better than Varmints, a huge colorful maximalist sugar rush. I do think there was a lost opportunity here, as she is also an exceptional classical composer, and getting a version of Five Telegrams (debuted at Prmos in 2018 but not available on a recording), which is one of the best compositions of the 21st century IMO, might have made this album of the year. That said, it's solidly Top 10.

Big Thief - Good, and "Not" is maybe my favorite of theirs, but Big Thief doesn't connect with me as much as they do with many others. I'd give this a 7, just like UFOF.

Chromatics - Have not heard it yet, though Chromatics are like Big Thief to me - a solid band that I respect, but I rarely go out of my way to listen to.

Floating Points - Really like it, though not as much as their prior LP. I need to give it more listens though.

Lightning Bolt - Maybe their second-best album after Wonderful Rainbow, and definitely their most fun. Just ridiculous in the best ways, and I was not expecting something this good from them at this point.

Richard Dawson - I struggle with Richard Dawson, he's extremely talented obviously, and all the attributes should add up to something I love, but he has not yet clicked. Will need to give it another couple spins.

Michael Kiwanuka - Have not heard the whole record yet. There are tracks I LOVE by him, but I've found an entire album of his can be a bit much. We shall see.

Caroline Polachek - Really have enjoyed the singles, particularly "Door", and again need more time with the album as a whole.

I also need to vouch for Matana Roberts' 4th COIN COIN record, Memphis. It's mind-blowing and harrowing, definitely the jazz album of the year, and for me a close second in her discography. Not necessarily for the faint of heart, but inching into my Top 3 this year. Speaking of which, here's my current Top 30, still morphing as we go.

1 | Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds | Ghosteen
2 | Weyes Blood | Titanic Rising
3 | Matana Roberts | Coin Coin Chapter Four: Memphis
4 | John Luther Adams | Become Desert [Seattle Symphony / Ludovic Morlot]
5 | Anna Meredith | FIBS
6 | Jenny Hval | The Practice of Love
7 | Holly Herndon | PROTO
8 | Sunn O))) | Life Metal
9 | Black Midi | Schlagenheim
10 | Kaija Saariaho | Circle Map, Graal théâtre, Vers toi qui es si loin & Neiges [Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra / Clément Mao-Takacs]
11 | Swans | Leaving Meaning.
12 | Yugen Blakrock | Anima Mysterium
13 | Sharon Van Etten | Remind Me Tomorrow
14 | Damon Locks Black Monument Ensemble | Where Future Unfolds
15 | The Comet Is Coming | Trust in the Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery
16 | Jaimie Branch | FLY or DIE II: bird dogs of paradise
17 | Moor Mother | Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes
18 | Jenny Wilson | TRAUMA
19 | The Art Ensemble of Chicago | We Are on the Edge: A 50th Anniversary Celebration
20 | Lightning Bolt | Sonic Citadel
21 | Billy Woods and Kenny Segal | Hiding Places
22 | Flying Lotus | Flamagra
23 | Glenn Branca | The Third Ascension
24 | Angel Olsen | All Mirrors
25 | Esa-Pekka Salonen | Cello Concerto [Los Angeles Philharmonic / Yo Yo Ma]
26 | Jamila Woods | Legacy! Legacy!
27 | Caterina Barbieri | Ecsatic Computation
28 | clipping. | There Existed an Addiction to Blood
29 | Ben Lamar Gay | East of the Ryan
30 | Kelly Moran | Origin EP

Revisiting this list:
Nick Cave - Obviously this is very high quality music, but I'm struggling to connect with it the way sonofsam describes above. It is very similar in tone and style to Skeleton Tree, but lacks the knockout punch of that album ("I Need You") and doesn't show much variety over its very lengthy runtime. I need to spend more time with it, but wasn't as blown away as I would've liked after the first two listens.

Angel Olsen - For whatever reason, I've never made an effort to get into her work, but I think I'll start after this album. The orchestration on some of these tracks reminds me of some great albums from the 70s.

Swans - Their run of albums earlier this decade of My Father... / The Seer / To Be Kind was legendary, and is among my favorite ever for any individual artist. 2016's The Glowing Man didn't do much for me, but I wouldn't really call it a disappointment; after five hours of incredible music on their prior three albums, what more did I really want from Swans? This new album, with a reformed lineup, doesn't even really try to recapture their past glory, as indicated by being the first Swans work in a while with a sub-two hour run time. This album is content to be lower-key gothic folk, and seems almost like a Michael Gira solo album. The music is still really good, and I have a feeling it'll be a grower. The track Sunfucker (what a title!) is an immediate standout. I do wish he had made better use of Anna von Hausswolff as a collaborator. Her album last year, particularly "The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra", provided some of the same thrills as peak-era Swans, but she's under-utilized on the tracks she appears on here.

Anna Meredith - This is likely to be my favorite out of any of these albums. I love the maximalist style, this album is so playful at times it feels almost childlike (in a good way). The song Paramour, which I enjoyed as a single release a few months ago, has really grown on me and will be one of my top tracks this year.

Caroline Polachek - Excellent work, one of my favorite female pop albums in recent years. Door, Hit Me Where it Hurts, and the title track Pang are all standouts.

Still spending more time on the other albums mentioned above, but it's all very good work.

There are almost no albums left to be released this year that I'm interested in (the only one on my "to listen" list is the new Coldplay album, and a Coldplay album in 2019 probably isn't gonna be top 10 AOTY material, let's be real here).

So here's everything I've heard so far:

Great:
