Julia Holter - Marienbad vs. Hot Chip - Flutes

Marienbad is probably the more interesting music in the long run, but at the moment I really like the catchy Flues. Both are in the top part of this weeks list

Odd Future - Oldie vs. Death Grips - Hacker
Hot Chip - Motion Sickness vs. Charli XCX - You're the One
Bloc Party - Octopus vs. Melody's Echo Chamber - I Follow You
Lana Del Rey - Ride vs. Adele - Skyfall

Nothing against he best Bond song since, lets say the 70s

Converge - Aimless Arrow vs. My Blood Valentine - Only Tomorrow
The Knife - A Tooth for an Eye vs. Nick Cave - Higgs Boson Blues

Another one where I liked both songs, but of course I have to vote for my nominee

David Bowie - The Stars (Are Out Tonight) vs. Waxahatchee - Swan Dive

Julia Holter - Marienbad v. Hot Chip - Flutes Built around vocal effects, Marienbad stands or falls on the strength of Holter's voice; luckily, it's captivating enough to be a success, only occasionally irritating. Alexis Taylor's singing is always too reedy for me, however, I was hoping Flutes would be an instrumental.

Odd Future - Oldie v. Death Grips - Hacker The main appeal of Oldie seems to be based round in-jokes for fans of individual OF members; saying that, Tyler the Creator's last verse is an inspired rallying cry for outsiders. Hacker, on the other hand, is crammed with surreal boasts/stuff you blurt out when you're wasted to a backing track that seemingly owes just as much to Blancmange as to rap.

Hot Chip - Motion Sickness v. Charli XCX - You're the One Can't say either track's fighting particularly hard for my affections, I miss the gobby Charli of I Love It. Taylor sounds like he's using some of Barney Sumner's phrasing for Motion Sickness, so I'll just pretend it's a lost New Order tune and give it my vote.

]Bloc Party - Octopus v. Melody's Echo Chamber - I Follow You Octopus harries along with Silent Alarm-style jerkiness but with the strobe synths of A Weekend in the City followed by a riff à la Thunderstruck of all songs. Just does enough to surpass I Follow You, which has Kevin Parker's sumptuous production all over but is just lacking in a hook that would have sunk Octopus.

Lana Del Rey - Ride v. Adele - Skyfall Two inflated ballads not especially dear to me, Skyfall wins by dint of being more distinctive in the context of its singer's discography (Adele has many slow songs but you couldn't picture any other as a Bond theme) than yet another public self-flagellation from LDR.

Converge - Aimless Arrow v. My Bloody Valentine - Only Tomorrow I like when metal songs are exciting enough to remind me to try more of the genre, do I hear some Suicidal Tendencies influence in Aimless Arrow? Only Tomorrow is like MBV never went away, meaning congealed vocals behind droning FX with little variation here.

The Knife - A Tooth for an Eye v. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Higgs Boson Blues Cruel to put such strong selections together (2nd vs 3rd this week, possibly among the 5 best songs in the tourney so far) but the little I've heard of The Knife mesmerises me each time, really struck by what sounds like a Chinese flute effect halfway through A Tooth. Higgs Boson Blues loses by margins owing slightly to its pace yet Cave's macabre take on scientific discovery, climate change and celebrity is as scabrously amusing as ever. (Will get round to listening to the new Bad Seeds album, just not encouraged by suggestions that it's essentially a longer Skeleton Tree).

David Bowie - The Stars (Are Out Tonight) v. Waxahatchee - Swan Dive The Stars isn't saying anything new to me lyrically or musically, indicative of a fairly prosaic 21st Century by Bowie's standards (that is, if it hadn't been for Blackstar). Swan Dive is far more richly detailed on all fronts, looking in horror at the future of a relationship where comfort has taken hold with strangely fitting galloping drums that nonetheless drop out in the last verse to bring focus to the song's best lines.

Best songs: Hacker, A Tooth for an Eye, Higgs Boson Blues, Swan Dive

Julia Holter - Marienbad < Hot Chip - Flutes
In Our Heads might be one of my favourite albums, definitely my favourite Hot Chip album. Flutes is particularly gorgeous.

Odd Future - Oldie < Death Grips - Hacker
Oldie is gripping but Hacker has energy

Hot Chip - Motion Sickness > Charli XCX - You're the One
Motion Sickness is a fantastic opener - it's definitely weaker than Flutes, but they're both great. How Do You Do and Don't Deny Your Heart are the other two big songs from the album for me, but neither ended up on AM.

Bloc Party - Octopus > Melody's Echo Chamber - I Follow You
I find Octopus kind of bland compared to Bloc Party's earlier output, but I prefer it to what Melody is putting down.

Lana Del Rey - Ride > Adele - Skyfall
Skyfall is good but it's not my favourite Adele or modern Bond theme. Ride, meanwhile, smashed it out of the park on a first listen for me.

Converge - Aimless Arrow < My Bloody Valentine - Only Tomorrow
MBV edge it out, but only slightly, not keen on either tbh.

The Knife - A Tooth for an Eye < Nick Cave - Higgs Boson Blues
Hell yeah Nick Cave what a track!

David Bowie - The Stars (Are Out Tonight) > Waxahatchee - Swan Dive
Very close, but I found Bowie's just a bit more interesting.

Julia Holter - Marienbad vs. Hot Chip - Flutes
The things Holter does with her vocals melt my brain.

Odd Future - Oldie vs. Death Grips - Hacker
Hacker is the most quotable song of the decade. Oldie has very good verses, and I can see absolutely loving it if you pictured yourself on a night out with the posse, rapping along. But it's too long.

Hot Chip - Motion Sickness vs. Charli XCX - You're the One
I feel bad for not enjoying Hot Chip more, but it is what it is.

Bloc Party - Octopus vs. Melody's Echo Chamber - I Follow You

I couldn't pick one for the 5th match; I like both, and it was too close for comfort.

Converge - Aimless Arrow vs. My Bloody Valentine - Only Tomorrow
Could have gone either way. Both are not really my favorite genres.

The Knife - A Tooth for an Eye vs. Nick Cave - Higgs Boson Blues
The production on "Tooth" is awesome.

David Bowie - The Stars (Are Out Tonight) vs. Waxahatchee - Swan Dive
Bowie's elderly vocals aren't a strength on this song like they are on Blackstar.

I didn't nominate either of the Hot Chip tracks but In Our Heads feels like the most underappreciated album of the decade. A shame Marienbad had to face off against "Flutes"...

Julia Holter - Marienbad
vs.
Hot Chip - Flutes

Odd Future - Oldie
vs.
Death Grips - Hacker

Hot Chip - Motion Sickness
vs.
Charli XCX - You're the One
This was a hard choice. Both songs were added to personal playlists.

Bloc Party - Octopus
vs.
Melody's Echo Chamber - I Follow You

Lana Del Rey - Ride
vs.
Adele - Skyfall
I found myself enjoying the Adele much more than I had in the past. But Lana still edged her out.

Converge - Aimless Arrow
vs.
My Blood Valentine - Only Tomorrow

The Knife - A Tooth for an Eye
vs.
Nick Cave - Higgs Boson Blues

David Bowie - The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
vs.
Waxahatchee - Swan Dive
The toughest matchup for me. Added both to personal playlists. Bowie by a whisker. Not sure how I'll feel about these two after living with them for a year.

Nicest discovery: David Bowie - The Stars (Are Out Tonight)

Hot Chip - Flutes
Marienbad is a brillant artistic achievement but Flutes is a solid contender for favorite song of the decade. Like the other best Hot Chip songs it brings melancholy to the dancefloor in the most touching way.

Death Grips - Hacker
Oldie is a cool showcase of a crew reaching its full potential for the shortest span, but Hacker is just the most quotable batshit blast of fun of the decade

Hot Chip - Motion Sickness

Converge - Aimless Arrow

The Knife - A Tooth for an Eye

2. Julia Holter - Marienbad
vs.
10. Hot Chip - Flutes

Well, Mariendbad is my nomination. What I love about Julia Holter is the way she experiments with vocals as both layers and counterpoint, therefor continuing an experiment started by Brian Wilson in the 1960's, but as far as I know picked up by afterwards by absolutely no one. Arguably, Für Felix from the same album does it even better, but that one wasn't eligible here and Marienbad is far from a poor substitute. It is as mysterious and transcendent as the film I suspect it is named after.
Flutes is good, original and forward-thinking too, but seems almost mediocre to me next to Mariendbad.

14. Odd Future - Oldie
vs.
11. Death Grips - Hacker

There is something about Oldie and it's fond showcase of a rogue's gallery of new rap talents, but I feel I haven't quite come to grips with it's fun factor yet. Hacker on the other hand is more immediate and I find it's sense of lunacy appealing.

8. Hot Chip - Motion Sickness
vs.
12. Charli XCX - You're the One

Motion Sickness is the best of the two Hot Chip tracks this week, even if it is not the best Motion Sickness of the decade. I like pop frequently the most when they mix things up and that is what Hot Chip is all about. Charli XCX's song starts very strong, with a very epic but brooding sound. This feeling remains, but it is still somewhat disappointing that it quickly reveals it is structured as a very conventional pop song. Not a bad one, but I feel like I was promised more.

13. Bloc Party - Octopus
vs.
7. Melody's Echo Chamber - I Follow You

I no nothing of Bloc Party after Silent Alarm, but here it seems they have slightly wavered their post-punk style and opened up to a more warm-hearted indie style. Yet I say 'wavered' as they haven't quite abandoned it yet. It is a mix between the two styles and somewhat appealing, if perhaps too slight to be really great (but that also goes for much of Bloc Party for me).
That Melody's Echo Chamber album was part of Moderately Acclaimed last year and I remember not caring for it. Perhaps that was a mistake, as I Follow You seems pretty strong to me now. It's the type of breezy and beautiful dream pop I am very susceptible to.

1. Lana Del Rey - Ride
vs.
3. Adele - Skyfall

Both of these are in my all-time top 1000, but only one of them is in my top 100. Skyfall is one of my favorite Bond tracks. I remember having a lot of discussion about it in 2012, as even though the song was embraced by mainstream audiences, it got a lot of flack from Bond fans and music lovers as if it were a crime to the legacy of Bond for some reason. Glad to see people came around to it, because Adele is better than most in capturing the sense of romanticized danger that for my qualifies a great Bond song.
But Lana Del Rey's Ride is something else. My favorite song of her after Video Games and because it did well in at least two previous polls on this forum I thought it was going to be a shoe-in for a win, but apparently people here are suddenly in love with Skyfall or something. And as always some people resent Del Rey for some unclear reason. "Public self-flagellation", really Mileswide? To me that song is one of the most cathartic of the decade. It captures the sense of wanting to go somewhere/ anywhere in times of feeling bad in a way not done since Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen, even if the context here is more openly sad. The sadness gets moulded into a sense of freedom that is essential to Del Rey. For me her work still is about the battle between the ecstatic and the fatal; in a way no else tells it. This one already perfected that vision very early in her career.
By the way, already since 2012, the year of Adele, I hoped that Lana Del Rey would do a Bond song. To me she seems the most obvious candidate since Portishead. But yeah, Portishead were never asked either, so I can't get my hopes up too much.

9. Converge - Aimless Arrow
vs.
16. My Blood Valentine - Only Tomorrow

Love or hate Aimless Arrow, but you can't deny the guys of Converges don't let their emotions crop up. I kind of love it's abandon, even if I wouldn't usually put it on. About My Bloody Valentine, I feel like I'm getting closer in understanding them, but not quite yet.

5. The Knife - A Tooth for an Eye
vs.
4. Nick Cave - Higgs Boson Blues

The toughest match-up of the week. I have a soft spot for The Knife and their messy album, but there is a poetry and dark power in Higgs Boson Blues (and let's face it, pretty much all Nick Cave) that shakes me to the core.

6. David Bowie - The Stars (Are Out Tonight)
vs.
15. Waxahatchee - Swan Dive

I remember like Swan Dive, but also forgot what it was immediately. The second time the same thing happened. So an easy win for David Bowie, as this is the best track of The Next Day, a gloriously catchy and quirky interstellar song, worthy of Ziggy Stardust.

Currently the best week, by far. Too sad my favorite discovery of the tournament will be eliminated because I was late on posting my rank.
Some 3 weeks ago I listened again to "Boy From School" on a random playlist and decided to explore Hot Chip stuff. After hearing these two tracks for the game, I listened to "In Our Heads". What a great album! I can't believe I have missed this band almost completely until now. "Motion Sickness", contains a lot of what I love in music: fulfilled background, a propulsive rythm, and that great intro with all the sounds presenting themselves in a pleasant sequence.
The same elements (creative, beautiful and unique sounds put together to generate a rythmic and chilling wall-of-sound) appear also in "Marienbad" (with Holter's voice doing almost all the work incredibly) and "A Tooth for an Eye". "The Warning", "Made in the Dark", "Loud City Song", "Ekstasis" and "The Money Store" are all in the my "to-explore" list, now.

Based on what I've listened to, I find her songs self-pitying and/or low-energy. But I can understand how others can see romance and desire for escape in her music. In equal measures, I accept I can get the wrong idea about particular musicians and I respect your opinions on music, Rob (you weren't wrong about The Hissing of Summer Lawns!), so I am willing to view LDR in a fresh light. What album of Del Rey's would you recommend to a Lana-sceptic like me?

We both know that Goldfrapp should've been commissioned to do a Bond theme anyway!

Hard to say. They all have their differences, but are also of one piece. Norman Fucking Rockwell is the consensus choice, a sort of complete realization of everything that came before. Born to Die stands out, because it is the most poppy of them all, with a lot of hip-hop beats and some dance-able tracks, although the lyrics are a little weaker than on other albums. If you like a Bond/ noir aesthetic, Ultraviolence is the best choice, but that is also the one were she dives most deep into her psyche, so if you don't want self-flagellation that is not the one to go. Honeymoon is the most quiet and soft, but is also a concept album with a narrative. I would not go with Lust for Life, a minor effort (though with a handful of great songs) were even I thought Del Rey was moving towards self-parody.

Last year I wrote extensively about her in this topic: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6719&p=90716&hilit= ... rey#p90716
I'll probably write a follow-up for it in that same thread, with something about NFR.

This should have happened indeed, but when she was at her most popular they went with Madonna for unclear reasons.

Bond themes are like Grammys, they rarely go to an artist at their peak. To not let Amy Winehouse* release the track she'd written for Quantum of Solace because she somehow couldn't crowbar that title into her lyrics was bad enough but it would've been nice to hear any soul singer be asked to do the theme while they were in their prime (Gladys Knight and Tina Turner's heydays having long since passed by the time they were asked).

Origin of Symmetry-era Muse* (like Goldfrapp and Portishead) would've made a standout Bond song from the villain's perspective, which Garbage and David Arnold did a decent job of with The World Is Not Enough.

Listened to NFR! last night (only the once but I have heard a few individual tracks on the forum's Weekly Chart), nothing really lingered beyond listening aside from hope is a dangerous thing...and Doin' Time but of course Gershwin & Sublime are partly to thank for the latter's memorability, will give the album another whirl though.

Reckon I'll go with Honeymoon for the reasons you gave and also because I feel I know a good chunk of Born to Die. I appreciate the well-thought out tips  Predictably excellent thread on LDR as well, like the fact you explored why people might not share your affinity for her music.

*I know neither of these acts is no more immune from criticism than LDR is. Nor should they or indeed any musician be- please feel free to make leather out of any of my sacred cows!
