Beach House - Space Song < Disclosure ft. Lorde - Magnets
Very close match, but i find the disclosure sound and Lorde's vocal's more appealing

Majical Clouds - Downtown > Roots Manuva - Facety 2:11
Mijical Clouds are fine, didn't really stick out, but Facety I just find kind of annoying

Grimes - California > Erykah Badu - Hello
California is amazing, same love for this as the love I have for the whole album in the Moderate Game. Hello is interesting but had no chance.

The 1975 - The Sound < Car Seat Headrest - Vincent
Have heard The Sound before, I kinda like it, but I prefer Vincent. Close match though.

YG - FDT < Parquet Courts - Human Performance
FDT is an evergreen, always relevant track but too one-note compared to how great Human Performance sounds - very Damon Albarn

Maxwell - Lake By the Ocean > Beyonce - All Night
Maxwell was fine and I'm not huge on recent Beyonce stuff

Blood Orange - Augustine < Shura - What's It Gonna Be?
Close match again, Shura is just more engaging to me

Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart > Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam - A 1000 Times
Both awesome, went with what felt like the more ambitious track

Beach House - Space Song v. Disclosure feat. Lorde - Magnets Space Song feels suitably weightless with an unexpected country twang to it, very easy on the ear. The beat to Magnets doesn't differ drastically from other Disclosure tunes I've heard but Lorde gives the track character, alternately drawing sweetness and vengefulness from the lyrics where it's needed.

Majical Clouds - Downtown v. Roots Manuva - Facety 2:11 Majical Clouds is firmly responsible for the most impressive track named Downtown in this tournament, the hushed instrumentation creating an eerie feel; the vocals just aren't quite to my taste. Facety sees Four Tet produce the rapper born Rodney Smith, whose lived-in, mellow tones bounce off the rubbery bassline. If you like what's been happening in UK hip-hop the last few years, regardless of whether you like this song, I recommend Roots' earlier albums Awfully Deep and especially Run Come Save Me.

Grimes - California v. Erykah Badu feat. André 3000 - Hello Not going to dwell on anything Art Angels-related, unless the album grows on me, which it might. 3 Stacks and Ms Jackson's dawwta reunite to coo along to a nice contrast to Hello's competitor.

The 1975 - The Sound v. Car Seat Headrest - Vincent Matt Healy seems open about his band's influences, which makes The Sound more endearing but no less like a agreeable enough Peter Gabriel update. Vincent tries to hide its true feelings with wryness but depressive confessions creep in to give the pacey post-punk tune depth.

Rob's not going to like your comparison of his choice with Damon Albarn :D

YG feat. Nipsey Hussle - FDT v. Parquet Courts - Human Performance The closest Nipsey Hussle got to renown in his lifetime, the track should be lauded for not holding back against Trump but don't quite match a more reserved critique of the President, Joey Badass' Land of the Free, or Flaming Lips' comparison of terrorists to him in Free Radicals. Human Performance seems to presage PC's own Freebird II, at least in A. Savage's throaty delivery, which has to be a plus as far as I'm concerned.

Maxwell - Lake by the Ocean vs. Beyoncé - All Night Lake by the Ocean ambles along unhurriedly, leaving Maxwell space to enchant us with his naturally polished vocal stylings. All Night is more at home as a breather before the righteous Formation but also offers a more peaceable reflection of life in the modern Carter family than its preceding singles.

Blood Orange - Augustine v. Shura - What's It Gonna Be? Both 80s-worshipping tracks but I'll side with Augustine for its unpredictable intro.

Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart v. Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam - A 1000 Times Cold Little Heart is more technically accomplished but Leithauser's delivery occurred to me as more engaged and engaging.

I've been accused of making tenuous links between artists before, but I stick by this one on a relisten. Verse guitar sounds like Plastic Beach, chorus vocals remind me of a few songs on blur. And it's also really good, another common theme between the artists XD

I can relate- as you'll know from Biggest Fan, I keep hearing Elvis Costello in other singers, such as in A. Savage's voice here and in Freebird II, which we'll cover in the last week of this round. He doesn't sound like EC to me in any other Parquet Courts songs, it's just an inflection in his vocals when he gets particularly emotional in these 2. Don't personally hear Damon vocally myself but I can hear musical resemblance and both Albarn + PC seem incapable of making the same song twice.

This week is more than usual a mix between the bad and the amazing for me (there is quite a drop after my number 10 of the week). The best ones I already knew, though, so it is lighter on discoveries than usual.

3. Beach House - Space Song
vs.
12. Disclosure ft. Lorde - Magnets

On a song level Space Song is the masterpiece of Beach House; well along with Myth. It lives up to it's title, with it's majestic sense of weightlessness. Magnets has the benefit of having Lorde present and the lyrics initially help me ease into the idea that we are getting an actual Lorde solo song. Sadly, the chorus is a letdown and eventually I feel that Magnets doesn't quite add up to anything truly special.

5. Majical Clouds - Downtown
vs.
13. Roots Manuva - Facety 2:11

This week's Downtown is very different than last week's. It doesn't reinvent the wheel of ballads, but I'll be damned if it doesn't sound soulful. It's just a beautiful, affecting piece of music and a masterclass in tender singing without overselling it.
The simple elegance of Downtown is being followed by a very different type of song, because although Facety 2:11 is very short, it crams a lot in that running time. It sounds very busy. In a way that is it's strength as it makes for two and a half minutes that really pack a wallop, although I don't have any particular feelings about the end product.

6. Grimes - California
vs.
15. Erykah Badu - Hello

I believe that California has appeared in a song poll here before, but then it didn't do much for me. It has grown on me a lot since than. A strange hybrid between a sad ballad and a peppy pop song, overlaid with a lot of electronics, it has become one of Grimes' most likable and emotionally affecting songs for me.
As for Hello, I want to like it as I admire both André 3000 and Erykah Badu, but the repetition of 'Hello' and later the silly 'Don't change, squirrel', just annoyed me to no end. Not a career highlight for both if you ask me.

16. The 1975 - The Sound
vs.
4. Car Seat Headrest - Vincent

Although I don't quite get the hype of The 1975 I have actually liked them from time to time. Not here though, as this is stereotypical pop music for the 2010's. Despite a catchy chorus (and with in mind that catchiness can turn to annoyance with me rather quickly) this one captures was I frequently don't like about modern pop: it has not texture. The use of autotune to make the voice sound more ugly doesn't help.
Car Seat Headrest on the other hand, hardly fails me. I like their sound, lyrics and especially the way how Will Toledo makes songs that aren't afraid to meander all over the place. Vincent is a supreme example, especially thanks to it's great extended guitar solo that starts of the song.

11. YG - FDT
vs.
1. Parquet Courts - Human Performance

FDT filled a need in late 2016 for someone like me who was shocked by the win of Trump, but I also feel that songs that are so one-sided, finger-pointing and frankly insulting to people who voted for Trump can really be great. It is frankly simple propaganda. I might agree with it, but I there won't be anything to return to after Trump's reign has ended. Love the opening line though: "Just when I thought things couldn't get any sicker".
Human Performance is my own nomination and for me one of the best songs of the decade. "Phantom affection gives a human performance" is one of the best lines from the 2010's, especially in context of the song as a whole. From the guitar riffs, to the deadpan delivery that can't disguise sadness, to the literate, brilliant lyrics, this song is just complete to me.

14. Maxwell - Lake By the Ocean
vs.
9. Beyonce - All Night

Lake By the Ocean is okay. Kind of forgettable to me, which leads to me not having much to say about it a few minutes later.
All Night is one of the better tracks from Lemonade if you ask me. I sometimes find songs from that album a bit too overblown and the lyrics to generalized, but here it all works, probably because of a closer-to-home subject. And the horns are a great touch.

7. Blood Orange - Augustine
vs.
10. Shura - What's It Gonna Be?

Blood Orange deserves more attention from me. I'm not particularly a soul man and even less as modern soul is concerned, but something about this guy gets to me. It's just very affecting and I like the quality - say texture - of his voice.
As these pop songs go, What's It Gonna Be? works for me. Why this one? I don't know, it just gets me moving, I guess (I'm aware I'm not writing my best stuff today).

2. Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart
vs.
8. Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam - A 1000 Times
Cold Little Heart was one of those songs I considered for a nomination, but luckily someone else did. An amazing song that I'd expect to rank high at AM, but barely hangs on. Since when did critics lose appreciation for sweeping yet delicate soul songs like this. The wonderful instrumental first half sounds like something you can't beat... Until that voice comes on. Amazing.
A 1000 Times is another good ballad, though one with more quirks and harder sounds. Nice discovery.

This week I had to rush this a bit.

Beach House - Space Song vs. Disclosure ft. Lorde - Magnets
I was super hyped for "Magnets" when it was released, because Lorde was my Billie Eilish. In retrospect, Lorde does her part, but Disclosure does not.

Majical Clouds - Downtown vs. Roots Manuva - Facety 2:11
Majical Clouds falls into my hated territory of dreamy indie emo.

Grimes - California vs. Erykah Badu - Hello
"California" is on par with "Rather Be" in my eyes - a pop song that does just enough.

The 1975 - The Sound vs. Car Seat Headrest - Vincent
The intro to "Vincent" is the most ear-grabbing thing this week.

YG - FDT vs. Parquet Courts - Human Performance
The bluntness of "FDT" is what makes it work. The song has become a bit dated because the election has come and gone, but it's still enjoyable. I nominated it because I love the album it's on, Still Brazy, which is the most dance-worthy rap album I've heard. "FDT" is probably the least danceable song on the album, but it's the big single and the only song eligible for this tournament. The opening to "Human Performance" is definitely similar to "Freebird II." Anyway, it's a solid track.

Maxwell - Lake By the Ocean vs. Beyonce - All Night
"All Night" is my second-favorite track on Lemonade next to "Pray You Catch Me," though like "Grown Ocean," the song is better in the context of the album.

Blood Orange - Augustine vs. Shura - What's It Gonna Be?
The 80s sheen of "What's It Gonna Be?" is perfect. Reminds me of both Madonna's dance-pop era, as well as the instrumental style of Paramore's After Laughter. "Augustine" was a worthy contender, though.

Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart vs. Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam - A 1000 Times
"1000 Times" was kinda unbearable. The vocals are so over the top, the slow pace is like a forced march. Forget the dream, the melody is repeated a thousand times. The mix feels wrong, too; the vocals are way on top, and the bass is at the bottom, and there is a large void in the middle that only slightly fills with some coloring here and there. "Cold Little Heart" is too similar to "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond" for my taste, and Kiwanuka's vocals are a tad anonymous. Chord progressions are very pretty, though.

Disclosure ft. Lorde - Magnets
Very close call, I am starting to enjoy Beach House much more than I used to but I think Lorde elevate Magnets (how do they work?) a bit higher

Roots Manuva - Facety 2:11

Erykah Badu - Hello

Car Seat Headrest - Vincent
Possibly my favorite artist of the decade, without a doubt my favorite rock one, and Vincent is probably my 3rd favorite of him. And the competition doesn't do it for me.

YG - FDT
Light Up Gold and Wide Awake will feature high in my decade list but I didn't connect much with the 2 albums in between and Human Performance doesn't do much to change that feeling. At least I'm happy to shout FDT chorus.
