Biggest Fan Songs - November 2019

Post by Rob »

Welcome to the November 2019 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.

There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.

Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.

You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

Sorry Zombeels, but outside of a cute Beatles-reference I don't hear what you hear in this.

Zombeels returns yet again, this time with an even more obscure song, not on Spotify. Also, this band should not be confused with Billy Boy In Poison.

297. Billy Boy On Poison – 4 Leaf Clover

Album: Drama Junkie Queen
Biggest Fan: Zombeels (#175)

Chuck Mangione – Land of Make Believe: 9
Amazing discovery! It starts as if we are getting a variation on Somewhere Over the Rainbow - and well, in a way that's what it is, but more epic and longer. The Wizard of Oz makes an appearance in the lyrics somewhere before the halfway point. It is a tribute to an idealized dream world, sung with feeling and lushly orchestrated. It works probably do well because the naivety is embraced and done without irony. It feels like the center point of a great musical. Superb; you'd think this could be a classic.

Billy Boy On Poison – 4 Leaf Clover: 3
This on the other hand... I don't think there is anything to this. To me this feels devoid of inspiration, passion, feeling or anything to take notice. The singer and band feel strangely like amateurs. I'm happy for them that they found one fan, but won't be surprised if Zombeels remains the first and last.

Nine Inch Nails – Just Like You Imagined: 8

A great instrumental, that in less than four minutes captures a whirlwind of emotions that NIN (or other bands) usually need a whole album for. There is a lot happening here, with many instruments continually being introduced and reintroduced. The entrance of the piano is pure bliss.

6 - Maybe better in the context of the album?
299. Franz Ferdinand - Michael
9 - Great cut from a personal favourite album. Only thing really against it is that I've always felt the chorus sounds a bit off, like it's too flat. Everything else is fantastic - the lyrics, the solos, the verses. Anything from Franz Ferdinand is peak nostalgia for me.

Today starts a film festival I work for and this will continue on to Sunday. Since I don’t want to think about this game in the meantime I drop all songs up and until Monday all at once, but if you prefer you can of course go through them day by day.

Incidentally, today’s song is the 300th, which mean we’ll get a new top 100 soon. I will probably not get to it until and week and a half or so, so if you want to catch up, this is the time! Everything until song 300 counts.

Wednesday

300. Кино́ [Kino] - Группа крови [Gruppa krovi]
Year: 1988
Album: Группа крови [Gruppa Krovi]
Biggest Fan: Panam (#229)

Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

Thursday

The second appearance of Stereolab here:

301. Stereolab – Tone Burst
Year: 1993
Album: Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements
Biggest Fan: Rumdoll (#338)

Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

Friday

Today another classical piece. The one in the playlist is the one that first appeared on Spotify. If Dexter has another preferred recording of the piece, please let me know.

302. Franz von Suppé – Leichte Kavallerie Ouvertüre [A.k.a.: Light Cavalry Overture
Year: 1866
Not from an album, but part of the opera Leighte Kavallarie (or Light Cavalry in English)
Biggest Fan: Dexter (#531)

Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

Saturday

303. Gary U.S. Bonds – Soul Deep
Year: 1981
Album: On the Line
Biggest Fan: Wezzo (#687)

Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

Sunday

The next song comes in many versions. Since Brad nominated the version credited to composer and lyricist Webber and Rice I assume he meant the original album version, that precedes the more famous musical and movie versions (I never knew Jesus Christ Superstar was an album before it went to the stage and the movies). Anyway, it fits a Sunday mass.

304. Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice – Heaven On Their Minds
Year: 1970
Album: Jesus Christ Superstar
Biggest Fan: Brad (#640)

Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

Monday

305. Tom Waits – 9th & Hennepin
Year: 1985
Album: Rain Dogs
Biggest Fan: Antonius (#545)

Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

Enjoy the film fest, Rob!

Jack Drag - We Could've Been Big 6 The tiredly meta lyrics aside, this is like a diverting approximation of Eels re-recording Ziggy Stardust.

Chuck Mangione with Esther Satterfield - The Land of Make Believe 2 I get that it's a parable for a dream of a better society than the troubled present (as The Wizard of Oz was alleged to be for the Great Depression) but Satterfield consistently tries to deliver it in this operatic register that doesn't quite land. The mixture of jazz and orchestral instrumentation here is straight out of a variety show, making the whole thing feel false, including the message.

Billy Boy on Poison - 4 Leaf Clover 5 Each rhyme is telegraphed and takes an age to get there. The 1st verse feels tense but the bluster of the chorus punctures that atmosphere for the rest of the song.

Nine Inch Nails - Just Like You Imagined 5 I like what I know of NIN but I get the same impression as Safetycat that listening to this as a standalone track doesn't do it justice. The passing squiggle of jazzy piano briefly varies this from sounding like incidental music in The Matrix.

Franz Ferdinand - Michael 5 I always saw this as being fairly interchangeable with This Fire in its structure and riffs, thus bringing more attention to what's being sung, which is an unconvincing imagining of gay attraction (you can practically hear them pretending to make a limp wrist along to the backing vocals). Kudos to them for trying to put themselves in someone else's shoes, though.

Kino - Gruppa Krovi 7 Sounds somewhere between new wave and New Romantic with darker vocals, sort of like a moody Flock of Seagulls. There's no way to tell if I like it more because I can't tell what's being sung or if it would gain stature by me knowing the language but I found it gripping for what it was.

Stereolab - Tone Burst 7 I promised I'd get into more to Stereolab when Brakhage appeared on Biggest Fan. This entry has guilt-tripped me into actually getting round to it, I'm listening to Tone Burst's parent album as I speak, honest! While this doesn't match its BF precursor (sequels never do), the outro is discordant and sweetly tuneful at the same time.
Rob wrote: Wed Nov 06, 2019 7:41 am 302. Franz von Suppé – Leighte Kavallerie Ouvertüre
Sorry for the pedantry, especially as you have other things on your mind, but it's Leichte Kavallerie Ouvertüre ;-) Anyway, LKO successfully evokes the sounds of war and, in its quieter moments, the sounds of a Viennese ballroom (if that's what it was aiming for) but seems too stiff and stuffy for me, resulting in a 5

Gary U.S. Bonds - Soul Deep 4 Promising intro leads into an overwrought vocal performance of a song that doesn't really connect.

Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice feat Murray Head as Judas - Heaven on Their Minds is unexpectedly a psych-prog masterclass! The guitar work is inventive but not as indulgent as similar instances in this era or genre, the key and tempo changes are smooth, the lyrics reflect how a contemporary case against Jesus might sound without being a strawman argument. And it rocks! This might wholly be a score made as an overreaction to the fact that a Lloyd-Webber song doesn't make me want to tear my ears off but for now, it's a 9.

Tom Waits - 9th and Hennepin 8 A pleasingly familiar surreal hobo travelogue from Waits but in a more restrained way than some of the fantastically grotesque fever-dreams on Rain Dogs. The insistent marimba makes it a nice photo-negative of Singapore.

Кино́ - Группа крови: 7
I saw this film, Leto, about events leading up to the formation of this band, earlier this year. That one already made clear they had a love for post-punk. This is a good variation on the genre.

Stereolab - Tone Burst: 6
Is it just me or is this just tuned all too greatly? It seems oddly muddled and it feels the sound is turned down, regardless if I turn it up. It feels like I'm listening to a demo. Maybe that's the point, but at the moment I feel like there is a really great song there, buried in a weird mix.

Franz von Suppé - Leichte Kavallerie Ouvertüre: 7
I've known this song for pretty much all my life, but never knew who was the composer (never heard of the guy before) or what the piece was called. That's probably because only a part of it, let's call it the most light and sprightly part, is used in probably over a 100 cartoons. But the Overture as a whole is actually satisfying.

Gary U.S. Bonds - Soul Deep: 7
Still have to listen to the original, but I find this a catchy, punchy soul song. Seems to do badly here, to my surprise.

Murray Head - Heaven on Their Minds: 7
Some songs from Jesus Christ Superstar have been around all my life - although then the versions from the movies or the stage musical; I wasn't even aware it was an album before those. My mother is a fan of Mr. Webber and mostly through compilations I have become more than a little familiar with the 'hits'. But Heaven On Their Minds is not among those and a more obscure pick. I saw the movie some - I don't know - 15 years ago, but don't remember this one. As presented in it's album version it is a surprisingly good rocking song with some strong lyrics, from the perspective of Judas.

Tom Waits - 9th & Hennepin: 6
More of a spoken word piece and despite there being characters it is more of a mood sketch, as well as some sort of scene setting for a story that never actually gets told. It's nice, but too short to work out of context of the album, especially as musically it isn't remarkable, even if it fits the mood.

Eurythmics - Angel: 5
Annie Lennox has a great voice, but this is too sanitized and sentimental to really get me.

Alternative TV – Love Lies Limp: 8
I like this type of punk: extremely unpolished, with unfiltered lyrics and a vocal delivery that is more emotion than singing. The frustrated humor is a lot of fun. It also beats The Clash to the reggae/punk mixup game. Cool song!

Eurythmics - Angel: 4
In the late '80s, Eurythmics ran hard away from their signature sound, and I don't think it really paid off for Annie Lennox until her solo album.

Neil Young - Peaceful Valley Boulevard: 7
On Neil's 74th birthday (oops, yesterday, whatever), I'm re-rating this and eating my old review. After listening to it again in the context of the album, and going over the lyrics (and listening to some very forgettable songs from his previous album), this song now feels like a pretty good epic.

Could get 4-5 with a better mix. The vocals are way too low, drowned out by everything else.

It's fine, I quite like the guitars, but it never really lifts off.

Sounds like something from CABARET.
