"Paper Doll" was one of the 2 or 3 biggest records in the USA for the 1940s. It was number one for 12 weeks and on the chart (which was only a top 30 then) for 36 weeks. It's listed as the biggest selling non-holiday single of the decade with over 6 million in sales.

Boris Vian - La Complainte du Progrès: 7
This song just rolls along very nicely. It has various melody and temp shifts, but somehow it all connects well. I had no idea what he was going on, but somehow I felt his mix between humor and frustration. And yes, lyrics translation learned me that it is about a man who seems to be done buying things for his lover (the "complaint of progress": love is not enough, materialism becomes a relationship requirement). I don't care much for slower, more sentimental chansons in general, but done this way it is a lot of fun.
The Mills Brothers - Paper Doll: 6
Man, these lyrics are silly. No matter how good the music or the performance, you can't live lyrics like these down. Earlier this week I found myself in a weird, but not all serious discussion about these companies that let you have sex with live-like silicon dolls. Apparently in the 1940's, someone already had the idea, but the dolls were made of... Paper? One of the worst materials I can thinks of. The weirdest thing about this whole song is that it is sung extremely seriously. I find it unintentionally hilarious. That works in it advantage, because otherwise it would probably be a proficient, but unexciting song for me. Now I can image the mental state of America in 1942, in the middle of the Second World War. People needed a diversion and turned toward... Paper Doll! What the...?

Man, these lyrics are silly. No matter how good the music or the performance, you can't live lyrics like these down. B - The fact that you think that lyrics are vitally important has you imagining all kinds of things that nobody back then ever thought of. The song is not in any way about what you say it is.
The song has been named one of the Songs of the Century and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Many artists have recorded it, including Bing Crosby for his album Songs I Wish I Had Sung the First Time Around (1956), Frank Sinatra for the album Come Swing with Me! (1961) and Pat Boone for his album I'll See You in My Dreams (1962).
The song was written in 1915 (although it was not published until 1930) by Johnny S. Black, whose greatest success would come with his song "Dardanella", which sold 5,000,000 copies in a recording by bandleader Ben Selvin in 1920 and a further 2,000,000 copies of sheet music. Black died in 1936, six years before his second greatest success, "Paper Doll", swept the country.
Black was apparently inspired to write the song after he was jilted by a girlfriend. The author Jack London Riehl wrote that Black was "a pianist, who augmented his income by boxing. His girlfriend ran off with another boxer, and he wrote this song, which began, 'I'd like to buy a paper doll that I can call my own ...' and ended 'I'd rather have a paper doll to call my own than have a fickle-minded real live girl.'
PS - Thinking about it, your post must have been a joke, right?
Re: Biggest Fan - November 2019
Not usually on the same hymnsheet as Hymie for pre-60s music but he's right, you're looking at this waaaay too deeply (unless it's a parody, in which case carry on!) Paper dolls were cardboard cutouts, you know, for kids. It's just like people today joking about marrying their dog or their car ("They won't answer back/leave me for my best friend"), they're not thinking of the, erm, mechanics of the imagined relationship!
I'll get up-to-date but, while I'm here, The Mills Brothers - Paper Doll gets a 5. It goes at a sprightly pace and the backing harmonies are tight but the lead vocals curdle on impact.
All I got inside is vacancy!

6 - Chorus is catchy
309. Boris Vian – La Complainte du Progrès
7 - A chanson I like, a rare event. Mostly for the lyrics - the send-up/critique of 50's materialism is very fun.
310. The Mills Brothers – Paper Doll
6 - I could ignore how funny I find the lyrics, but my score would be lower. What a lovely and strange song. I think there's some corners of the internet that could use this as an anthem.

Re: Biggest Fan - November 2019
Yes, to a large extend it is. It is very tongue in cheek and as I wrote on I kind of decided to run with it. The whole thing about World War II and silicon dolls is not serious (though I did think about silicon dolls when listening to this; obviously not an association that existed in the fourties). But there is some truth in what I say when I find the seriousness of singing in combination with a certain goofiness in the lyrics (he has had 'millions of girls', who all let him down, so he turns to cardboard cut-outs) rather funny. I can't help myself.
I also am incapable of not hearing lyrics as long as I can understand what the singer sings. It certainly doesn't influence all my ratings, but I do value when lyrics are in sync with the musical and vocal delivery.

Punk that wants to smash things up is among the best punk. Laura Jane Grace is also one of the genres best vocalists.
On another note; I wanted to update the top 100 of this game this weekend, but I have been under the weather this whole week and am behind schedule. I'll postpone it to next week.

As Wikipedia has just taught me, this song is about white crosses a church put up in its yard representing the number of abortions occuring in the USA. Just listening to the song and the lyrics that's something I wouldn't have gathered, but it's interesting to note. Overall, a nice punk song.

I love how the instrumentals create a sort of tumbling sound.
Jackie Wilson – Doggin’ Around: 4
One of those songs that just passes me by without making any sort of impression.

Re: Biggest Fan - November 2019
I am shocked that people get nothing from what is probably THE BEST singer in rock and roll history, Jackie Wilson. He pours his heart out on "Doggin' Around." The song was #1 for 3 weeks on the Billboard R&B chart in 1960. It's a HUGE classic record. If that vocal performance just "passes you by" I guess you are listening for very different things than I am.

Vashti Bunyan - Train Song: 8
I had Vashti Bunyan on my radar for some months now, but haven't been able to dig in yet (damn you Moderately Acclaimed, Year End and Decade End, you leave me no time for obscure sixties artists!). As I thought, this is really my thing. A beautiful melody as a worn-down sepia photograph and a voice that chills me.

301. Stereolab – Tone Burst
4
302. Franz von Suppé – Leichte Kavallerie Ouvertüre [A.k.a.: Light Cavalry Overture

I have a pretty vast ignorance of classical music. I always liked this one but didn't know it's title.
Added to 2007 playlist (based on release date for rendition I found on Spotify)
303. Gary U.S. Bonds – Soul Deep
Gospel overtones on this are nice. I like it but don't love it.
5
306. Eurythmics - Angel
7. Added to my 1989 playlist.
307. Alternative TV – Love Lies Limp
6. Added to 1977 playlist.
308. World Party – Put the Message in the Box
8-Like this one quite a lot. Added to 1990 playlist and I could see this one ending up on my All Time list in the future. Sounds like an E.L.O. outtake in a good way.
310. The Mills Brothers – Paper Doll
Having grown up very close to the Mills' Piqua, Ohio stomping grounds, I'm more aware of their material than most of their peers despite its vintage. Great combination of lyric and skeletal arrangement. This one's in my Spotify library.
9
312. The Good, the Bad and the Queen – History Song
6. Possible grower, added to my 2007 sampling playlist.
313. Jackie Wilson – Doggin’ Around
Love the honky tonk piano accents. In my Spotify library.
8
314. Vashti Bunyan – Train Song
Lovely voice, nice singer-songwriter number. Added to my 1966 playlist.

Just a fine Bob Marley/ Wailers track. They deliver the quality you expect from them, but it is not as transcended as many of their most well-known tracks.

Re: Biggest Fan - November 2019
It seems classical music is getting more popular around here. This time it doesn’t come from Dexter:
316. Johannes Brahms - Violin Concerto in D major: III. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace – Poco più presto

Whereas Dexter seems to have gone more for the lighter classical music, this one seems to belong more to the - let's say - more loaded ones. The violin is still used at times for frivolous moments, but also turns more moody frequently. The music is also much more layered, with a lot going on. I didn't know this piece, but this is more the kind of classical I truly like.

When talking about duet it is usual to discuss how well the voices match, but here I especially like the contrast between the vocal qualities of the two ladies: one deep, one high. Still their delivery is similar. It creates something beautiful. It is a big pleasure to listen to these two.
