Marky Ramone and the Intruders – Telephone Love: 6
A Ramone punking it up as if the seventies never ended. Fun and I guess it is too much to ask a Ramone to develop over time.

314. Vashti Bunyan – Train Song: 8.5
315. The Wailers – Midnight Ravers: 7.5

316. Johannes Brahms - Violin Concerto in D major: III. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace – Poco più presto: 9.5
I tend to limit myself to only including a handful of pre 20th century classical pieces on my lists, and even then they are downgraded somewhat. But given that this has come up, I need to score it appropriately here.

317. Maria Bethânia & Gal Costa – Sonho Mue: 6
318. Marky Ramone and the Intruders – Telephone Love: 5

The next song is bubbling under on AM. Also, perhaps the first song to appear here from a participant of Swedish Idol:

319. Tove Styrke - Ego
Year: 2015
Album: Kiddo
Biggest Fan: Jackson (#997)

Modern pop of a kind I don't particularly like. Sounds too plastic for my tastes.

1. Johannes Brahms | Violin Concerto in D major: III. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace – Poco più presto | 10
2. Maria Bethânia com Gal Costa | Sonho Meu | 8
3. The Wailers | Midnight Ravers | 7
4. Jackie Wilson | Doggin' Around | 7
5. Vashti Bunyan | Train Song | 7
6. Marky Ramone and the Intruders | Telephone Love | 5
7. Tove Styrke | Ego | 5

My second perfect score for this game. The final movement of a brilliant concerto piece from the Romantic period that has a joyful and majestic sound but recently has been tinged with an ominous, dark and even violent tone. Quoting Asher Gelzer-Govatos: "Never been able to hear it the same way since Paul Thomas Anderson used it to brilliant effect in There Will Be Blood." Just check the final scene in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWizfJUYT7o.

PS: Rob, the correct name of the Bethânia song is "Sonho Meu" and not "Sonho Mue."

I know I'm in the way of first impressions on The Crickets but I've put off my other scores this month for too long:

Eurythmics - Angel 4 This plays out like an Annie Lennox solo song- worthy but not a great deal happening musically, dry-ice production and Lennox having lost the light touch she brought to earlier Eurythmics recordings.

Alternative TV - Love Lies Limp 7 Punk-reggae that couldn't quite match singer/Sniffin' Glue writer Mark Perry's heroes The Clash but enjoyably messy nonetheless.

World Party – Put the Message in the Box 5 Seems unfinished and just slips out of view as a result.

Against Me! - White Crosses 6 I voted for AM! in the recent punk bands poll mainly on the strength of their debut album Reinventing Axl Rose. By White Crosses (the album and the song), they had completely shed their ramshackle country/folk-punk tinges that were already disappearing on their previous record, the streamlined but still solid New Wave. Their lyrics may have been getting more important (especially after this album when Grace transitioned) but this song showed how slick they were getting, so they were no longer as relevant to me.

The Good, the Bad and the Queen – History Song 5 When this album catches fire, it results in the everything-goes approach of Three Changes and the title track, both of which are in my personal top 1000. Through too much of it, though, Albarn & co seem determined not to make memorable music and so it proves here.

Jackie Wilson - Doggin' Around 5 No doubting Wilson's vocal prowess (as well as his 3 soundtrack staples, I Lost You is a favourite of mine), this just doesn't go anywhere.

Vashti Bunyan - Train Love 5 Doesn't distinguish itself from many other folk songs for me.

The Wailers - Midnight Ravers 6 Showcases a harmony-led style elsewhere exhibited on the album by Stir It Up but with not enough lasting impact.

Johannes Brahms - Violin Concerto in D major: III. Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace – Poco più presto 6 I'm completely cloth-eared when it comes to classical, I preferred the tender solo parts to the full-throttle orchestra sections, which just felt like fairly typical bluster of its genre.

Maria Bethânia com Gal Costa – Sonho Meu 7 As Rob said, nice contrast and blend of vocals, which doesn't outlast its welcome.

Marky Ramone and the Intruders – Telephone Love 8 Feels more power-pop than straight-up punk but an enjoyably dumb headrush.

Tove Styrke - Ego 5 Starts off with what sounds like synth steel drums, promising a harder-hitting take on tropical house, but settles into a pretty identikit groove.

I guess Johnny Cash swiped the bassline from the Crickets' version for Guess Things Happen That Way and it's for that reason I'd personally opt for the later rendition of You've Got Love. It still gets no more than a 6 from me due to the sappy delivery of lyrics that aren't bad just perfunctory.

I forgot to rank Boris Vian – La Complainte du Progrès ! It's a charming early examination of "luxury's disappointments" (© Billy Bragg) but maybe too delicately delivered, Jacques Brel would have gleefully torn this track up, while Georges Brassens would've taken a wry sideways view of the material. Once again, it's a 6.

Prince - U Know: 5
For the most part all these Prince songs appearing here have given me the idea that both critics, consumers and us AM forummers have actually managed to pinpoint the truly great Prince songs and that most that didn't get more than one vote really doesn't stand out. U Know is a good is case in point (with Free as the opposite, the exception). It may not be bad, but in the vast catalogue of our Purple Overlord I find no reason to turn to this one.

Eagles - The Best of My Love: 4
With the exception of a handful of songs I never quite got the appeal of the Eagles. This is a good example of why. It may be proficiently sung and played, but somehow it remains dull. There is a complete lack of true inspiration, spontaneity and for me depth of feeling here and it always threatens to lull me into sleep.

Absolutely, there are greater crimes than thinly veiled theft of musical ideas if you manage to improve them, which Cash did!

Seeing as I've dropped by, I'll rate the last few days:

Prince - U Know 7 A more relaxed tempo on a Prince song usually means only one thing and so it is here. The production, though, leans towards neo-soul and The Artist Formerly Known As Symbol doesn't fall in love with his voice like he'd normally do on his boudoir ballads, it makes for surprisingly comfortable listening.

Eagles - Best of My Love 5 Immaculately yet glacially delivered country-rock, pales next to anything on the same year's Grievous Angel by Gram Parsons, who arguably founded the genre.

Jimmy Eat World - You with Me 5 Amiable enough mainstream rock but, like the last entry, would have sounded more effervescent with less studio time.

Decent memories of this song, though the highlights of this album are its cover, and the Eagles playing Tom Waits.

Jimmy Eat World - You with Me: 4
I never was much impressed with this band, but at least they were catchy. On this instantly forgettable song they aren't even that.

The Rolling Stones – Love in Vain: 7
Say about them what you will, but few of the sixties British rockers could pull of traditional blues (this time around, Robert Johnson) both so authentically and still personal as The Rolling Stones.

The Rolling Stones - Love in Vain 6 Nothing wrong with the instrumentation, not least when Richards goes all pizzicato in his picking, but it's Jagger that delivers here, pushing himself as ever to his vocal limits and gleaning every ounce of soul out of the song. It's just not one of their more exciting numbers, still hard to believe it didn't get any more traction in the A-T list though.

315. The Wailers – Midnight Ravers Always very good, it is my lack of knowledge in this style that keeps me from putting it in my lists. 8/10
316. Johannes Brahms - Violin Concerto in D major: III. Allegro giocoso, One of my favorite concerti. It would be an obvious 10 if I rated the classical music here.
317. Maria Bethânia & Gal Costa – Sonho Mue What beautiful voices! And this rhythm is still as "exotic" to my ears as ever, and so pleasant. 7/10
318. Marky Ramone and the Intruders – Telephone Love Excellent! Excellent! Very melodic punk. 7/10
319. Tove Styrke - Ego I have a big problem with the chorus, it's a shame, I liked the rest. 5/10
320. The Crickets – You’ve Got Love As usual.. but more boring. 3/10
321. Prince – U Know it's not the Prince I love 5/10
322. Eagles – Best of My Love Not my dope at all 3/10
323. Jimmy Eat World – You with Me not much to say, too smooth 5.5/10
324. The Rolling Stones – Love in Vain the rhythm is surprising, I was going to put less at the beginning and then the more I went to the end of the song, the more I found it good. 7/10
