Either 70s or 2010s would be wonderful for me. I’m not sure if I feel the need to rediscover the 2010s considering that I’ve already been doing that for two months prepping for EOD.

I do think jumping into the 10's immediately would be redundant, because we're certainly going to have EOY and EOD polls in the coming months.

For selfish reasons I wanted to do 2010's now. For me, after the eighties, I have gone full circle with these polls. Did one for each decade, except the 2010's. I always listen to a lot from the poll's decade, but am not going to do that once again now I have all of them. The 2010's would be a good cap. That's just me though.

As long as we're doing an EOD for 2010s, I'm easy with 70s or 10s next, I prefer both decades to the 80s. I do, however, think precedence should be given to the opinion of more longstanding members who have already been through the decade cycle.

My "con" argument against the '10s being cycled next is that we will have just done a substantial '10s poll (and would we cycle back normally to the '10s again in 2023 -- or much later?). My "pro" argument is that if a bunch of '10s polls would risk being a retread, another '70s poll could certainly be called a retread; plus someone like me has not done a deep dive into the '10s, which our year-long poll would help remedy.

If we kept with the normal cycle, the '10s would come up in 2023, which doesn't seem like a long time to wait, so I'm leaning toward waiting until then.

Maybe the answer then is to utilize the "end of decade" poll for the 2010's to satisfy those looking to summarize their favorites from the recent past, then continue to treat the year-by-year decade polls in the same order we have always done, with the 2010's coming up in 2023 (it may seem like a long way away, but trust me it's not!).

I guess I'm just furthering my own case here, but is it really necessary to break stride with how we've proceeded over the last 12+ years? No matter how many times we go over each decade (I've been through two 70's polls already), I find there's ALWAYS more to explore from our past, if you're willing to open up a bit.

I strongly agree with this point. There's a lot of great music to be found in the lower ranks of the AM lists that I certainly haven't heard yet, and having a focus of a given year or decade really makes it easier to focus on that. And I didn't even mention unranked stuff...

I looked through the Old Forum a while back, and for the 2000s they did a poll for 2000s albums and songs after the decade ended, and waited until the cycle of albums came back to the 2000s a year later for the cycle of decade polls. I feel like we should do the same thing here. Plus, it'd be interesting to get a perspective on what albums from the decade we loved now, and how tastes changed by the time 2023 rolled around. I don't think we should wait until 2021 to release the first 2010s poll (I wouldn't be too happy about that personally). Let's do the 70s once the 80s poll ends, as expected.

I'm being persuaded that it is wise to hold back on the 2010s until 2023, I feel that my 2010s lists will be rather preliminary at the end of this year, but maybe a breathing space will provide a better perspective than launching straight into year polls. Anyway, I do love the music of the 1970s.

00's or the freakin' 70's. A hard choice. If we do the 00's we get the opportunity to become frontrunners on the web! Also remember that for every good song of the 00's there are 5-10 from the 70's. It will be almost SHOCKING diving right into the year 1970 now in january. Jobim, Rodriguez, Velvets!

One good piece from the 00's below:

Re: Albums and Songs of 1989 Poll

Post by Father2TheMan »

As to the "What next?" debate:
I vote we let EOD take care of the 2010s for now and do the 2010s year by year in 2023.

I personally would like to do the 2000s next for year by year since I started to get "out of touch" musically around then and it would force me to do some deep diving into the decade's tunes.

But I am sure I would still make some new discoveries from the 70s if we did them next.

Another option would be to do a pre-1950 poll...but I am guessing there is less interest from most of the forum in those years.

So onboard the 70's poll I've already started looking into 1970 - speaking as someone new to this game, I'm keen to keep going in order since there'll already be so much decade discussion next year.

There's actually quite a bit of interest in the pre-50's era. However, we traditionally do the decades in reverse order, so 70's would be next, followed by '60's in 2021, then 1900-1959 in 2022.

Fred wrote: Sun Nov 24, 2019 9:05 pm Also remember that for every good song of the 00's there are 5-10 from the 70's.
That's the other way round for me, the 70s is by far the decade I like the least (if we start with the 60s to the 2010s). There are obviously a couple exceptions a year, but the 71 to 76 stretch is the crossing of the desert for me.
The 00s though ? Bet there are a few years I can come up with a top 30 albums without going below 4 stars.

Albums :

1) Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
2) The Cure - Disintegration
3) Fugazi - 13 Songs (Fugazi EP + Margin Walker EP)
4) Galaxie 500 - On Fire
5) Pixies - Doolittle
6) Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster & Panaiotis - Deep Listening
7) 808 State - 90
8) Noir Désir - Veuillez rendre l'âme (à qui elle appartient)
9) De La Soul - 3 Feet High and Rising
10) Nirvana - Bleach
11) Mano Negra - Puta's Fever
12) The Mekons - The Mekons Rock 'n' Roll
13) Neneh Cherry - Raw Like Sushi

Less depth than 88, but that top 5 is crazy good. Paul's Boutique is my favorite album of the decade.

Songs :

1) The Cure - Lullaby
2) Beastie Boys - Shake Your Rump
3) Beastie Boys - B-Boy Bouillabaisse
4) Pixies - Hey
5) Fugazi - Waiting Room
6) Beastie Boys - Shadrach
7) Faith No More - Epic
8) Beastie Boys - Looking down the Barrel of a Gun
9) Another Sunny Day - You Should All Be Murdered
10) The Stone Roses - I Am the Resurrection
11) Galaxie 500 - Blue Thunder
12) Madonna - Like a Prayer
13) Mano Negra - Sidi H'Bibi
14) The Mekons - Amnesia
15) Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance

So I now know that Waiting Room is 88 (would have been my #2) but I had it in 89 because of the album...

Yeah, maybe we should do 2010s first. Dig up every future classic possible. Then let it rest a few years and then re-do it. The 1970s don't go anywhere.

For fun or reflection perhaps, the number of songs from each 70s and 10s year on my ever evolving top thousand list:

1970: 49 songs
1971: 30
1972: 29
1973: 38
1974: 32
1975: 44
1976: 26
1977: 35
1978: 31
1979: 24

2010: 8
2011: 3
2012: 7
2013: 5
2014: 2 [The 'Interstellar' (indian) drone chase song ("Cornfield Chase" by Hans Zimmer) and "Ben's My Friend" by Sun Kil Moon]
2015: 5
2016: 4
2017: 5
2018: 1 (sorry, Frank, MGMT and Beach House, even Julia Holter is not very interresting anymore...)
2019: 1 (a jazz tune so it doesn't really count...)

PS. "Rock by older people was often made when they were young". "Youth is wasted on the young" (Greenberg)

I don't know who's decision this is ultimately, but here's how the schedule would lay out if we continued doing this the same way we have since the inception of the yearly decade polls:

2020 - 1970s
2021 - 1960s
2022 - 1900-1959
2023 - 2010s
2024 - 2000s
2025 - 1990s
2026 - 1980s
2027 - 1970s
2028 - 1960s
2029 - 1900-1959
2030 - 2020s

Then global destruction.

There's actually quite a bit of interest in the pre-50's era. However, we traditionally do the decades in reverse order, so 70's would be next, followed by '60's in 2021, then 1900-1959 in 2022.

I would be down for the standard sequence in that case. 😁

My option would also be the 2010s first. In fact I half assumed that it was going to be like that and I thought it was my opportunity to have a much delayed catch-up with the decade. But I could perfectly wait until 2023 for that. Anyway I'm not going to participate on the 1970s, 1960s and 1950s poll if this is the final decision, I'm not participating on the 1990s and 1980s too. I'm an old member of the forum and I already participated twice. I enjoyed it a lot the first time and even the second but I prefer to dedicate my spare listening time to other things/games.
Since the opinions on this thread are quite divided (the first ones were mostly keen to the 1970s but lately some people chose the 2010s) maybe the best way to decide is to make a poll on the subject. Moreover this thread is for 1989, maybe it's better to continue with the comments on an specific thread.
