Biggest Fan Songs - January 2020

Post by Rob »

Welcome to the January 2020 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.

There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.

Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.

You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

January
February
March
April
May
June
July
August
September
October
November
December

Year: 1981
Album: La cuna
Biggest Fan: Panam (#182)

346. Elvis Presley – You’re the Devil in Disguise: 8
347. Roy Harper – Twelve Hours of Sunset: 5 Yawn
348. Frankie Allen – Just a Country Boy: 7 - quite a nice discovery
349. Buddy & Ella Johnson – Bring It Home to Me: 4
350. Hank Williams – Mind Your Own Business: 7
351. Nirvana – Stay Away: 8 - a staple of the grunge movement
352. Love and Rockets – Sweet Lover Hangover: 8 - excellent, catchy song from a vastly underrated band
353. King Crimson - Red: 8 - classic prog rock.
354. T. Rex – Electric Slim and the Factory Hen - 6. Always been a T-Rex fan, but they have done better
355. Neil Sedaka – Oh! Carol - 5. Fairly generic oldie.
356. Ray Baretto – Pastime Paradise - 4 - a really poor version of the classic Stevie Wonder tune. Wants to bring latin/Cuban influences in the mix. The middle part actually works for me - but the vocals and their delivery ruin the first part and therefore my rating...

Ray Baretto – Pastime Paradise: 8
Disagree with spiritualized here; I think this is very well done. The Stevie Wonder tune has already delivered two classics - Stevie's own as well as Coolio's Gangster's Paradise - but there is room for one more. It is simply a great tune and by slowing the original down Baretto creates an appealing groove that also helps the vocals (they don't match Wonder, but work well as they are). Then there are the improvisations which go along nicely, until it circles back to the chorus. It both honors the original as well as reinvents it. Good stuff.

Now we are at this for one year it is a good moment of taking stock. Personally, I'm fine with continuing, but I wanted to poll how interested people are still in this. There has been a drop-off in participation as of late, although with the holidays, a year-end poll, a decade poll, an eighties poll and other games that is to be expected. Honorio has sadly announced to quit the game and other regulars are no longer turning up. Just a hiatus or a momentary lapse of interest/ time? Please let me know.

Absolutely still interested! It might surprise some but I don't overly like to criticise on here unless I can temper it with praise, so I only usually add my view once I hear at least an 8 or sometimes a 7. There hasn't been much I can place in that bracket recently (I may have to downgrade my Nirvana score, even) but the Love and Rockets track is within that kind of range, I'll try to rejoin the fold in the next few days :greetings-waveyellow:

Maybe I was a tad hasty with my predicted marks of the 23 songs I've missed. Taken together, they could have easily soundtracked the family Christmas gatherings of last year that already seem a distant memory.

There's your younger sister playing Ne-Yo as a throwback to what she bumped before getting into Drake, your uncle who claims to have roadied for Uriah Heap "before they were big" nodding appreciatively to Crimson, the gramps jiving about to Elvis & Sedaka, your Cousin Jay trolling everyone by slipping the Haddaway track in...

It might not all be to your taste but you had a lot more fun than you'd like to admit. And all of the tracks I'm catching up on are fun. Apart from...Roy Harper* and Whitney Houston ballads in the Xmas Party Playlist? Is this your doing again, Jay?

Back to business, three-word-reviews for most tunes in the two threads:

Ray Baretto - Pastime Paradise 6 Catchy, kitschy sashay

Ne-Yo - Beautiful Monster 5 I remember the song, I'd forgotten the Extreme G/Wipeout 2097-techno of the backing track! Doesn't redeem it but makes it more diverting.

*Not a slight on Harper's song, it's just not something to put on while entertaining guests. Houston's one, on the other hand...

O Rappa - Minha alma (A paz que eu não quero) 6 Very tasteful in a late 90s way, like dinner-party samba or the equivalent of Santana's Supernatural album out round about the same time.

Rhodes piano lines meander over the top of the traditional samba rhythm on the cowbell-like instrument, which I'm told by Google is an agógo.

After a few listens, the rhythm is the only element that's lodged in my brain so far but I felt peace while listening, even if O Rappa didn't.

O Rappa - Minha alma (A paz que eu não quero): 5
Lacks something for me. There is some appeal to the singing and the instrumentals, but it seems somewhat underproduced, almost.

Merle Haggard and the Strangers – Here In Frisco: 6
Don't expect an ounce of originality, but there is something pleasant about the slow tempo here.

Gorillaz – Don’t Get Lost in Heaven: 8

I'm not someone who believes everything Gorillaz do is golden, but there is not denying that when something of them works, it works extremely well. The funky rhythm, the choir, the lyrics: it just all feels complete and exactly right. Could almost have been a single.

By the way, regarding my post earlier this week, it's good to get some positive feedback. I myself am very much willing to continue this, so we go along and see if participation picks up after the year and decade poll.

357. Ne-Yo – Beautiful Monster - 2 : Horrible. Generic techno beats, and the singing is weak.
358. O Rappa - Minha alma (A paz que eu não quero) - 4 : Here is the song that wants to be everything: hip-hop, soul and trip hop. It doesn't succeed much at either style. The language barrier doesn't help, sadly.
359. Merle Haggard and the Strangers – Here In Frisco - 3 : Soppy and soft country, far from the grittiness of Johnny Cash, the only way to go country for me...
360. Gorillaz – Don’t Get Lost in Heaven - 5 : rather average track from Albarn & co. It feels like filler and I was waiting for a beat to barge in :)
361. Bad Brains – I and I Survive - 3 : I usually am partial to a good bit of reggae. In "I and I Survive", it fails. The classic reggae rhythm is present and fine (although not sure about the guitar solo), but the vocal delivery is awful ("whhhyyy")

356. Ray Baretto – Pastime Paradise - 7
More of a reimagining than a cover. Great stuff.
357. Ne-Yo – Beautiful Monster - 6
I don't mind... this. It feels very distant from the sound of other 2010 dance tracks, which i appreciate.
358. O Rappa - Minha alma (A paz que eu não quero) - 3
359. Merle Haggard and the Strangers – Here In Frisco - 7
I'm very amenable to this sort of old country tune.
360. Gorillaz – Don’t Get Lost in Heaven - 8
Most of the album is higher rated than this for me. Still amazing.

Bad Brains – I and I Survive: 7

I only knew Bad Brains by reputation as a hardcore punk band, so I was surprised when I got a very mellow reggae track. Not even a reggae punk like some songs by The Clash, but reggae played straight. Complete with white men pretending to have a Jamaican accent, something that has always struck me as completely fake. Regardless, this is actually a very good reggae tune, played in earnest and with some fitting socio-political lyrics. If it was a little shorter it might have been truly great; now it kind of drags towards the end.

I'm a little unclear as to whether you're referring to The Clash or Bad Brains here... Bad Brains are all black, of course, and singer HR's mother is originally from Jamaica, which probably explains his accent. Most (all?) the band members are Rastafarians. Glad you liked the track!

Part two of Brad’s week. This time he brings an acclaimed song, that ranks at #7067 on AM:

Well, although the comment certainly extends to bands like The Clash, I was actually referring to Bad Brains. Why? Because I'm an ignorant idiot who assumes that every punk band from the eighties is white.

X - We're Desperate: 7
This is old-school punk: very rough and in a way very bad, while in another way very good. They sound desperate indeed, even if I can't shake the feeling that despite all their bleak posing the punks had the most fun.
