Athlete Lists

Post by Holden »

Hey I’m starting a project similar to the Acclaimed Music/TSPDT/TreasureTv/etc. (which I have a thread for advice for) but please, if you come across ranked athletes, be them all-time, yearly, specific sports, etc., please post them here. Thank you!

Any and all lists, even of specific sports, and especially foreign lists (I am a United Statesian if it wasn't clear already) would be amazing! I have a formula that lowers the points of more-specific lists, so literally any list of this type would be absolutely wonderful!

Lists like this are helpful, so keep them coming if you find them! What I’ve done is created a formula and given multipliers to various criteria, including living persons, so any and all lists are amazing!

Re: Athlete Lists

Post by andyd1010 »

I'll start with my bread and butter: The best men's singles tennis players of the 21st century. Other lists will require more research. After the previous discussion about popularity, my ordering of the top three here is pretty unpopular. The margins between the three are extremely small. I think Nadal's 19 majors are more impressive than Federer's 20 because he won them all with Federer and/or Djokovic established as a dominant force, whereas Federer won 12 of his 20 majors before Djokovic won his first and before Nadal won his first outside of clay. Nadal has the best career winning percentage of all time and leads both Federer and Djokovic head-to-head in Grand Slams. But Djokovic is the youngest, has had the upper hand against both of them for most of the last decade, and I could easily see him ending up at No. 1. I give Federer a lot of credit for maintaining such a high level at age 38, but I think his two biggest rivals raised the bar even higher than he did.

1 | Rafael Nadal
2 | Novak Djokovic
3 | Roger Federer
4 | Andy Murray
5 | Stan Wawrinka
6 | Andre Agassi
7 | Lleyton Hewitt
8 | Marat Safin

Also, I have added a few more lists, and the total athletes included between all of them is 1087!

Again, thank you so much for these lists! When I put up any version of the website, I would like to include sources (obviously), and I was wondering how you wish for me to refer to yours? I'll link to this site, unless you have them posted elsewhere, but for the title I was just wondering what you would like. For example:
ESPN SportsCentury: Top 100 Athletes of the 20th Century
Complex Sports: G.O.A.T. Athletes: The Definitive List
If you would like your name or something else, that would be absolutely fine!

Some Guy on the Internet: The Best Men's Singles Tennis Players of the 21st Century

Good question. I shouldn't attribute it to my company, and I just found out if I type my name and title it goes right to a page with my phone number, so I should probably do something else... I'll think on it.

I think that's fair. I agree that I definitely wouldn't include lists of just a simple statistic like yards.

Re: Athlete Lists

Alright, here's my first attempt at a list of the greatest athletes of all time. I haven't consulted anyone else's opinion on this yet, and it's hard to narrow it down to 100, so I have 118 at the moment. I wouldn't enter this one into your aggregation quite yet, since I think it could probably use some tweaking. I welcome any criticism and suggestions for people I have too high or too low, or people who should or shouldn't be included. I'm happy to debate and defend my choices, but I am also very open to arguments for why I should change it.

If you're giving every source a title, you could attribute this to Andy, a sports researcher at a major U.S. sports media company... if that's not too generic.

Rank | Athlete | Sport
1 | Michael Jordan | Basketball
2 | Wayne Gretzky | Hockey
3 | Muhammad Ali | Boxing
4 | Lionel Messi | Soccer

Not a commentary on your list, as I have almost no expertise in sports, but Lionel Messi so high will make a Big shakeup!

My roommate is one of the preeminent soccer (football) researchers in the country and considers him the greatest player of all time, and I think it's fair to argue that soccer has the deepest talent pool of any sport, so I think he deserves a high place. I went back and forth about whether or not to place the three tennis greats ahead of him and Ronaldo, but tried to combat my bias a little bit. I thought it might be overkill to have half of the top six be tennis players. And there's almost nothing separating him and Ronaldo. Their career achievements are strikingly similar.

Couldn't procure a full list from him, but he said that Messi is a clear #1 - that Ronaldo is the best finisher in the history of the game, but that Messi is a better all-around player. He thinks there's a sizable gap between Messi and Ronaldo, then another sizable gap before Pele and Maradona, about whom he said he'd have to think for a long time before deciding which one is better. After I looked into it a bit more, I decided to move Ronaldo and Maradona back a few places. Feel free to include my top 100 as is. I'm curious to see future updates from your aggregation - I'm sure there are athletes I overlooked! Or achievements I'm not aware of that would make them deserve higher rankings.

Here's another list that came to my mind about a sport that might be a bit more obscure. Television commentator Dave Hendon, writer Hector Nunns and professional snooker player Alan McManus choose the 10 greatest snooker players ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYP655z1ryo

This is the final list:

1 | Ronnie O'Sullivan
2 | Stephen Hendry
3 | John Higgins
4 | Steve Davis
5 | Mark Williams
6 | Ray Reardon
7 | Mark Selby
8 | Neil Robertson
9 | Joe Davis
10 | Alex Higgins

Okay, so unfortunately (sorry, especially to andyd1010 who made his own list) I have ultimately abandoned this project. I simply was not enjoying it, and picking athletes was a poor choice, as I have little to no interest in sports.

No worries! If you have a more refined aggregate than the last one you posted, I'd be happy to see it. Otherwise, don't worry about it. It was a good exercise for me to brush up on some more sports history.
