Albums and Songs of 1970 Poll

Post by Listyguy »

Out of my mind on Saturday night
1970 rollin' in sight
Welcome to the 70s! This month, we will be looking to find the best songs and albums from 1970. If you want to participate, please post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums from that year in this thread. Only the top 20 will be given points, but larger lists are always welcomed and encouraged. On the other end of the spectrum, you need to list at least 5 songs/albums in order for your list to count towards the tabulation.

The top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final decade poll. Additionally, there will be 50 wild card spots available to the songs and albums that miss the top 10. Wild cards will be determined using the points received in the yearly polls, with the point totals normalized by the number of lists that are submitted in that year. Wild cards also allow songs and albums with unclear release years to receive votes in both years. Points are awarded using this system:

Code: Select all

Rank Points
1	50
2	45
3	40
4	36
5	32
6	28
7	25
8	22
9	19
10	16
11	14
12	13
13	12
14	11
15	10
16	9
17	8
18	7
19	6
20	5
The deadline to vote is midnight (UTC aka Forum Time) on March 1st.

Compilations are not allowed. If you're unsure about a release date, consult RateYourMusic.com and AcclaimedMusic.net. It's worth noting that the following songs from 1970 albums were released in 1969 and are therefore ineligible for this poll (I will add any major omissions to this list over the month):
  • "The Boxer"
  • "Get Back"
  • "Across the Universe"
  • "Pressure Drop"

I guess I can't vote for it, but my favourite song was recorded (live) on January 31, 1970 (or possibly 1st February 1970) at The Warehouse, New Orleans: Fleetwood Mac: I've Got A Mind To Give Up Living/ All Over Again.

The song was originally written and released as "All Over Again" in 1965 by BB King. There are 10 known live recordings by Fleetwood Mac all from 1969 & 1970. As far as I know, none of them has received an official release. The version recorded at the Warehouse is the most famous and most popular.

149. Lynn Anderson Rose Garden
Love the huge list, Henry. The ones above the line are from 1969, and the Lennon is from 1971.
Hymie, are you sure Rose Garden is from 1969 and not from 1970? If so, in 1969, was it released as single or part of an album?

My mistake, ROSE GARDEN is indeed 1970.

Song Top 80:
Dionne Warwick - I’ll Never Fall in Love Again
Syl Johnson - Is It Because I’m Black
These were both singles that were on the charts already in 1969.

60. Sly & The Family Stone – Everybody Is A Star
71. Beach Boys – Cottonfields
The Sly single came out in Dec 1969, and the Beach Boys song was on the 20/20 album in the spring of 1969, although the single I think is a different version and may qualify for 1970.

In an identical vein, Monkey Man by Toots and the Maytals is another 1969 title track of a 1970 album, where you'll also find Pressure Drop, again released in '69.

Hi Listyguy, question about eligibility. DaveC expresses the doubt in this thread about being able to vote for a live version of a song in the year of that version, is that policy?

Of course, even if this were the rule, it wouldn't necessarily apply to songs like Too Much Too Young or Needle and the Damage Done where the live version is the famous/only incarnation.

But what about songs that have a live version not released in the same year or not officially released at all? Not a crisis either way, I'd just like to know whether to class Peace Will Come by Melanie under 1970 (the year of its original release) or 1972 (when my preferred performance was broadcast on TV).

I've got the same uncertainties about Woman of the Ghetto, Orange Claw Hammer, Coat of Many Colors, Turn the Page and FM where I prefer it live but Melanie's is the only instance of 1970 for me. Please excuse my longwindedness!

The general rule is that the earliest release year for a song is used, because we don't vote for specific versions of songs. The case DaveC brought it is a bit different because the song has never been released. In that situation, I'd say that the earliest year of its bootleg availability (if known) should be used.

I managed to dodge that in the 80s polls then as I voted for specific remixes and live versions in years subsequent to release but I'm completely happy to categorise by year of original release for the sake of clarity on both sides. Thanks for explaining! And that's good news for DaveC (provided the bootleg was made available in '70)

Wait, is Pressure Drop from ‘69? I was using AM as a reference and it was on the 1970 page.

Sadly so, we may have to raise an error with the 2018 update! Wikipedia and Discogs have it as 69, originally on this album https://www.discogs.com/Toots-And-The-M ... ter/666607

RYM and Allmusic are both way out with the release as 1979 and 1984 respectively. The weird thing is AM's got it right about Monkey Man (i.e. 1969 release date)
