Post by Moonbeam »

We've spent the last 10 months sharing our love of the 80s, and it's time for one final celebration!

Summary

Before we do, here are some stats from the monthly polls:

Code: Select all

Year Album Ballots Album Votes Song Ballots Song Votes

1987 40 716 45 3006
1988 37 708 46 2655
1989 39 758 45 2876
In total, 2,539 albums and 12,525 songs received at least one vote. That's a lot of love! Because of that, halfway through the poll, I asked whether participants were interested in an expanded final field, particularly as there were some questions regarding the new point system and whether it was more closely aligning with the overall AM list. Most seemed to be in favor of the expanded pool, so in this final round, 200 albums and 300 songs will compete for ultimate 80s glory.

Scoring System

Image

Those who did were not in favor of an expanded pool said they felt it would be more work to rank more albums and songs, with likely little effect on the final outcome. I sympathise with that sentiment, and this is why I have adopted a point system for the final round which does not punish albums or songs for not being included on many ballots. The final rankings will be based on the Simple Ranking System used in sports. Basically, the submitted lists will give me a count of "wins" and "losses" for each pair of albums/songs, and these win and loss totals will be used to determine the final ranking. For example, if Song A and Song B both appear on 20 different lists, and Song A appears higher on 12 of these lists, this system will treat it as if there was a "game" between Song A and Song B in which Song A scored 12 points and Song B scored 8 points. Albums and songs that don't appear on as many lists will tend to have point differentials closer to 0, such that they should cluster toward the middle of the list.

Consequently, I would encourage you to rank as many albums and songs as you feel you know well enough to evaluate, whether you love them or hate them! There is no minimum number of items to rank for either poll. In theory, you could rank just 2 songs or 2 albums and submit your list.

How to participate

Here are the templates for submission.

These Google sheets are set to "View Only" mode. You can make a copy (File -> Make a Copy) or download (File -> Download) so that you can edit them.

Fill in your rankings in column G for each spreadsheet, and then send your ballot to princepoll2016 [at] gmail.com, either as an attachment or as a shared Google sheet.

Alternatively, feel free to simply write a ranked list and send as a PM to me here - I've built up my spreadsheet skills thanks to this poll, so please don't let technology be a barrier to your participation!

I'll be busy teaching an accelerated course in January and early February, so let's set the deadline for February 10th,2020. I know this eats into the next decade poll a little, but I likely won't have time to collate everything before then.

Version questions

Image

In some cases, a song is popular in various versions, for example the original 1983 release of "Blue Monday" as well as its 1988 reimagination "Blue Monday '88". As I have combined votes across years for songs (and albums), I'd encourage you to rank songs and albums based on your favorite version released in the 80s.

Had to lookup TLDR, turned out I already had. Thanks for this Moonbeam. Even with spreadsheet skills it is a lot of work.

Radical lists! Surreal to think that everything from Sinatra to Public Enemy via Arvo Pärt and Swans are covered in one decade!

Today I've started my daily plan of listening to 4 albums and 6 songs from these, can't guarantee I'll keep that up but staying along those lines should allow me to complete this with plenty of time before the deadline...

Sorry if this was already answered somewhere and I just missed it, but how were the wildcards decided? Were the points normalized by votes cast in that year?

Also, it looks like 1982 has 17 and 19, but no 18? Not sure if this is a numbering mistake or if the wrong album was added to the final round.

The wild card points were equal to the number of accumulated points divided by the number of ballots. For songs that had votes for multiple years, I added votes to the most voted year or the year with the AM listing. For example, suppose a song got 150 points in 1982 as a result of 8 votes and 50 points from 1983 as a result of 3 votes. The votes were combined so that the song had 200 points, and the wild card points is equal to 200/(total # of 1982 song ballots + 3). The +3 comes from the fact that I transferred the votes from 1983 to the 1982 poll.

The year place for The Lexicon of Love and Chronic Town was a mistake! I had forgotten to add someone's ballot that year but didn't update the year places.

Damn, 300 songs. If that was mentioned before I missed it. It's cool that it encompasses so much, but I feel it is a bit daunting to rank twice as much as usual, especially with this whole end of decade thing coming up, as well as that the eighties have more songs than other decades that I simply don't have burned in my memory. At least the deadline is two months of. I'll have to see if I can make it work.

I feel a bit like the teacher who had bad reputation for assigning too much homework!

I am more than happy if people want to submit lists based on just the albums/songs they know. I’m not expecting anyone to listen to all of the albums and songs, or so any additional listening if they don’t want to.

Don't worry!
I just finished my first step, putting all the songs in three columns!

I love it! I love it!
I like it, but no more than that!
And I don't like it!

I end up with almost a third of the songs in each group... but it makes the classification much easier afterwards.

I've posted lists for all the years, but I won't be able to commit to a list for the final game. Going to be travelling and working a lot next couple of months and don't have the time.

Thanks for a great game, though!

You can send them to me via PM, but I think it's best not to post your lists publicly, as I'd like the final results to have some element of surprise.

There were some decent albums that made it to the decade poll in 2013, and did not fare so well this time around, including":

6/98. (my decade rating/decade poll rating) Joe Jackson Body and Soul
12/150. Whitney Houston Whitney
51/112. Marillion Misplaced Childhood
65/145. Living Colour Vivid
67/135. Rick James Street Songs
74/122. Simple Minds New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)
82/108. Mary Margaret O'Hara Miss America
89/139. Echo and the Bunnymen Porcupine
109/146. Prince Lovesexy

Most disappointing is the decline for Joe Jackson' "Body and Soul" which actually made it to the top 100 of the decade last time.

"Body and Soul" and "Miss America" are currently in my to 100 of all time, so they will be missed. Also in my top 100 AT is "Life's a Riot with Spy vs. Spy", but I expect that everyone has a few disappointments.

Also stunned that not a single Bragg album made the cut, despite me having each in my top 5 for the relevant year! I would've had Almost Blue instead of Imperial Bedroom and The Gift rather than Sound Affects but I know those ain't exactly consensus choices...

Looking at the album list, I have listened to most of them but so many fall in the "I have heard that but have no recollection of it" category that I have no idea how I'm going to rank them (and also am mad at myself for not taking quick notes after listening to them).

Got another song and album ballot thanks to Chris K.

14 of the 16 song ballots so far have included ranks for all 300 songs. 9 of the 15 album ballots have ranks for all 200 albums.

That said, there shouldn't be any pressure on anyone to fill a complete ballot. I might not be able to get there, especially for the albums poll!

Hey Moonbeam,

during the past weeks I listened to all 300 songs that reached the final round of the 80s poll.
That was quite some work, but also a lot of fun.

I just sent you the Excel file with my favorite 100 songs ranked in column G. Let me know if this is OK.
And hopefully my #1 will make it to the top 10!

It's been less than a week since I sent my list and changed my mind about a lot of it, "Shake Your Rump" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven" have improved.
Some bands in which I realized that the name of the band were bigger than the songs lost some positions.
And, mainly, I have a huge difficulty in classifying the bottom positions of the list.
Anyway, now just wait for the results...

If you have the time you should rank all the songs you have an opinion on. Because of the win/loss calculation used by Moonbeam, even just putting the song you dislike the most at 101 will help your top 100 more than not ranking it.
Basically, your #100, which is still a song you liked more than 200 others, is now losing against 99 songs and has no bonus against the 200 others so you're not doing it any favor !

I sent a private message containing my album list to Moonbeam, but it's stuck in my outbox :(

Andre wrote: Sun Feb 09, 2020 10:42 pm Hey Moonbeam,

during the past weeks I listened to all 300 songs that reached the final round of the 80s poll.
That was quite some work, but also a lot of fun.

I just sent you the Excel file with my favorite 100 songs ranked in column G. Let me know if this is OK.
And hopefully my #1 will make it to the top 10!

Moonbeam, just resent my list to you as discussed and promised. :music-rockon:

Nassim, thanks a lot for pointing that out. I now ranked 150 songs #1 to #150 and put the other half on #151. :music-guitarred:

Why not? A few other people have sent files that aren't working for me, so try to get your list in!

Up to 30 album ballots and 34 song ballots now. The 90s poll had 29 and 30 and the 00s poll had 24 and 24, so this is good!

This won't be relevant to you now but, as far as I understand, a message on here will stay in your outbox until the recipient logs in next. While it's not massively reassuring to see your PM just sitting there, it will eventually get to its destination! :angry-tappingfoot:
