Neil Young doing Kraftwerk? As unlikely as it sounds, it works.

Neil Young - Transformer Man

9

From my favorite of his "weird" albums. (While his '80s run was halfway a disaster, I'd call it superior to his 2000-09 albums. Though I guess he was supposed to know better in the '80s.)

If you like, there is also an ordinary, acoustic version of this song from his Unplugged show.

This song comes in two versions: a single version from 1973 and a re-recorded album version of 1974. I think only the album version is available on Spotify, so I went for that one, but if Fred has a clear preference for the single version we can go for that one. It is bubbling under on AM:

410. Mott the Hoople – Roll Away the Stone
Year: 1973
Album: The Hoople, but released as a single a year earlier in a different recording
Biggest Fan: Fred (#686)

Mott the Hoople – Roll Away the Stone: 5
I only know this band for All the Young Dudes, which is a great song. When this started I thought I was in good hands, because I was in the mood for some seventies style rock. But something here doesn't quite gel. Mostly the voice, which just doesn't seem quite able to keep up with the music. Besides, the lyrics are dull and too repetitive for my tastes. Too bad, because behind all that lies a solid rock tune.

Tim Buckley's voice remains strange, no matter how much I hear it. He's in a good mood here and dare I call the song groovy?

Google recommended this version. I liked it a lot!
407. Dio – Holy Diver - 7
:music-rockon:
408. Yann Tiersen – La Dispute - 5
Perfectly fine film score.
409. Neil Young – Transformer Man - 3

Almost too much going on here. It kind of works?

Cartola - Sim - 3
No comment.

Young Jessie with Maxwell David & Orchestra - Mary Lou - 9
Not to be confused with "Hello Mary Lou", written by Gene Pitney and recorded by Ricky Nelson. "Mary Lou" was a hit single when it recorded by Ronnie Hawkins with more fine on the record's sound than Young Jessie's version where it raw.

The Penguins - Ookey Ook - 1
This release is hard to sell or rarely known by other listeners. They are more known for their song, "Earth Angel".

Wire - Mr. Suit - 4
It pretty acclaimed because their music received by some peoples.

Prince - Partyup - 6
He was more known for his song, "Purple Rain".

Sandi Thom - What If I'm Right - 2
It pretty poor because thinking of its wish as a Punk artist, this song mainly Country.

Franz Ferdinand - Outsiders - 9
They are more known for their song, "Take Me Out".

Lorde - Team - 6
She was more known for her songs, "Green Light" and "Royals".

Neil Young - Transformer Man - 4
Not to be confused with "Old Man", his song but not related to "Transformer Man". He was a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Mott the Hoople - Roll Away the Stone - 3
No comment.

Dio - Holy Diver - 2
Ronnie James Dio, their member, is more known as a member of Rainbow.

Tim Buckley - Sweet Surrender - 1
Poor rating because his vocal is still weird.

WhoMadeWho – Hi & Lo (Konstantin Sibold Acid Mix): 4

On cynical days I feel that much electronic dance music doesn't seem to have evolved that far from New Order's Blue Monday from 1983. Some days confirm these feelings. Sadly this happened on a day I was especially not in the mood for electronic dance music. I'm happy for people who see the point in making this song, but today I can't find it. It sounds like a million other songs to me.

Bouncy violins from the Balkan. Extremely traditional, so don't expect any kind of surprise, but the energy quotient can't be denied.

Fine pop punk, rather melodious for the genre. It seems to be something of the twenty-something version of Alice Cooper's I'm Eighteen, lyrically.

This is a very nice one, with a melody that has a very appealing flow and vocals to match. Might be a grower.

Apparently I gave MIA a 6 as well. This one is fine and I like some parts (deep voice joining in is a nice touch) but overall just doesn't interest me.
