This is from 1969, bumping everything up (live versions count for the year of the original song's release).

I don't agree with that. That would mean that things like "Show Me The Way" from "Frampton Comes Alive" would have to go in 1975 instead of 1976. And several songs from "Mad Dogs And Englishmen" would go in prior years than 1970. In the case of the Who live from "Woodstock" I would agree with 1969 because that track is not on the "Woodstock" album.

Much like the main site, the poll is version agnostic. I'm not going to be incredibly strict with release years so ro use your Frampton example, I'd accept votes in 1976 as well as 1975.

I thought I had posted my lists yesterday, must have been censored by the Clapton Illuminatis

Songs :

1) Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You
2) Simon & Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy in New York
3) CAN - Mother Sky
4) Minnie Riperton - Les Fleurs
5) Black Sabbath - War Pigs
6) Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song
7) Tim Buckley - Song to the Siren
8) Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
9) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Ramble Tamble
10) Black Sabbath - Iron Man
11) Exuma - Fire in the Hole
12) Black Sabbath - N.I.B
13) The Velvet Underground - Oh! Sweet Nuthin
14) Deep Purple - Speed King
15) The Beatles - Across the Universe
16) Cat Stevens - Wild World
17) Stevie Wonder - Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours
18) Crosby, Stills & Nash - Our House
19) Neil Young - Southern Man
20) The Kinks - Lola

Albums :

1) Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
2) Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
3) Deep Purple - Deep Purple in Rock
4) The Stooges - Fun House
5) Exuma - Exuma II
6) Neil Young - After the Gold Rush
7) Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory
8) Black Sabbath - Paranoid
9) The Beach Boys - Sunflower

And if I could once in my life give negative points to an album, I'd give them to Layla and Other Assorted Songs (just to be clear, I don't think it's the worst album of all time, or even the worst album on AM, but it's easily the most overrated and probably the album I dislike the most in AM top 500)

The 1970 to 1973 run of Black Sabbath is incredible, but I'd argue Paranoid is the weakest of the 5 albums. The self titled and Master of Reality are the 2 genres defining ones and Vol. 4 is just home run after home run with impressive diversity (I wouldn't fight as much for Sabbath Bloody Sabbath but I still think it is more consistant than Paranoid).
Even worse is seeing Paranoid as the most acclaimed song. Paranoid (the album) boasts War Pigs and Iron Man, 2 songs for ever in the metal hall of fame is there ever was one (is there one ?) but Black Sabbath, N.I.B., Children of the Grave, Sweet Leaf, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Changes, Snowblind and Supernaut (with Beck's favorite riff of all time) all are way more interesting and exciting than Paranoid

You almost definitely know this but the band recognised Paranoid was a Communication Breakdown rip-off and put pressure on the label not to release any follow-up singles when they saw to their horror that it was being seen as a *gasp!* pop song that people were dancing to. I like it- it's as catchy as metal gets- but, as you say, it isn't a patch on N.I.B., Hand of Doom or much of what was to follow.

I'm equally unenamoured by Layla the album outside of Layla the song. Layla was probably one of the lizard people too ;)
All I got inside is vacancy!

Listyguy, I've made a change to my songs list. I thought "Heartbreaker of the Year" by Denise LaSalle was from 1971 but it looks like it was released in 1970. I've added it at #11 on my list. Thanks!

Re: Albums and Songs of 1970 Poll

Post by Listyguy »

A few notes and observations:
  • Don't try to compare these point totals to years past. With the new point system, a voted that maxes out their list will be distributing 408 points, roughly double the amount that they used to be able to (210).
  • "Only Living Boy In New York" received four first place votes and one second place vote, which was almost all of its points.
  • I tabulated all of these results with a still in progress program, and while I monitored the results pretty closely, it's definitely possible that I made a mistake. So if you notice anything that's off, let me know.
  • The full results file is attached.

Not that it counts but I will also be holding onto "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" for 1971. Oops.

For reference, here are the top 15 from the last time we did this poll (2014):
3| "Theme de Yoyo" / The Art Ensemble of Chicago
5| "Child in Time" / Deep Purple

The Revolution...is 1970- it appeared on Small Talk at 125th and Lennox, a 1970 live album, before it showed up on 1971's Pieces of a Man. It's missed its chance to get into the top 10 sadly...

Er... I think you meant to say ‘My Finest Worksongs of 1970’. And I think you forgot the RYM link: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/DrDre/fi ... ongs-1970/

It’s so lovely to have you back.
Well ... yes, I meant to add the link, but that list is still somewhat in progress. I did not manage to complete a top 100 there and tomorrow I am going on vacation for two weeks...

Thank you, I feels great to be back and have the opportunity to listen to more music again :music-listening:
Hey Dan, I finally caught up and have the 1970 list complete. At the beginning of this year my aim was to establish a top 100 for each year starting 1950, but that is going to take me too much time (yes I am a perfectionist). So I am going back to a minimum of 50 songs, or all songs with 4 stars and higher, still a nice collection per year.

Admirable list, as always. "Het Dorp" by Wim Sonneveld is a pleasant bit of nostalgia with moving lyrics, and a nice discovery. I also noticed it high on antonius's list. It's the kind of song that at first sounds a bit out of place among the other songs on your list, but after listening to it a couple of times I can understand how it ended up being a Dutch treasure.
...will keep us together.
