The Koln Concert 86 - Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd 73
Coming Up 82 - The Age Of The Understatement 80
Black Sea 91 - Beauty And The Beat 83
Historian 87 - 666667 Club 85

When I started listening to Drive By Truckers it gave me a greater appreciation of Skynyrd. But for every Sweet Home Alabama there’s something like Gimme Three Steps about how getting a gun pointed at your face is a normal every day story and not, as sane people would react to it, a terrifying traumatizing life event.

Black Sea was my first Fennesz album. It’s hard to explain why I like Fennesz albums so much, you just get totally entranced before you realize it.

I think your standards of what constitutes a normal every day story might be slightly skewed. Getting a gun pointed at your face in the rural South in the 1970s was, maybe not everyday, but more common an occurrence than you might imagine.

Gimme Three Steps is based on a real event:
...a real-life experience Ronnie Van Zant had at a biker bar in Jacksonville known as The Pastime, having a gun pulled on him for dancing with another man's woman

Even so, any reasonable person’s reaction to that should be abject horror, his song normalizes it. It feels like an endorsement of our national gun fetish.

I get the distinct impression the narrator considers a threat of murder is a reasonable, proportional response to dancing with someone’s girl.

"Well the crowd cleared away
And I began to pray
As the water fell on the floor
And I'm telling you son
Well, it ain't no fun
Staring straight down a forty-four
Well he turned and screamed at Linda Lou
And that's the break I was looking for
And you could hear me screaming a mile away
As I was headed out towards the door"

Sounds like abject horror to me. I think you're reading things into Lynyrd Skynyrd that are not substantiated by the text but rather on stereotypes of the American South.

On a side note... Noir Désir's L'Homme Pressé was written in 1996, 24 years ago
I have pumped the lyrics into Google Translate and amended some of them, but this is REALLY uncanny.

Can anyone else see who he is singing about (although not on purpose ?)

I'm a frozen model
With a sun tan
Debased, man in a hurry
My bullshit is the fate of the world
I don't have time, I'm off
My career is at stake
I am the media man
I am more than political
I'm going fast, very fast
I'm a universal human comet
I go through time
I am a reference
I am omnipresent
I become omniscient
I invaded the world
That I do not know
I don't care
Whatever i know
I have men at my feet
Eight billion potential
Enslaved morons
Except some of my friends
From the same world as me
You do not imagine
How Gay they are
Who wants me
And crumbs from my brain
Who wants to enter
In the web of my network
Daily activist
Inhumanity
Immediate profits
Media favors
I am rich, very rich
I work in real estate
I know how to do business
Some can pay
I know all of Paris
And then the rest too
My unique knowledge
And their women I
Frequent obviously (excellent play on words here)
The purse strings
Relax for me
There are no more secrets
I am the King of kings
Exploded ratings
Pulverized the audience
And what do you think
It's my way, it's my chance
I love the shows
On television
No time to watch
But I make them
We spit food
To those hungry eyes
You see they are asking
We know they are greedy
Of our rot
Better than jam
To pigs
Who wants me
And crumbs from my brain
Who wants to enter
In the web of my network
You know who i am
A man in a hurry
A man in a hurry
A man in a hurry
I am a man in a hurry
A man in a hurry
A man in a hurry
I'm a daily activist
Inhumanity
And immediate profits
And then media favors
I am rich, very rich
I do in real estate
I know how to do business
Some can pay
And then I go through time
I became ubiquitous
I am a great reference
I can always bring my science back
I go fast, very fast
My career is at stake
I am the media man
I am more than political
'Cause I'm a busy man
A man in a hurry
A man in a hurry
A man in a hurry
A man in a hurry
A man in a hurry
I'm a daily activist
Inhumanity
And immediate profits
And then media favors
I am rich, very rich
I do in real estate

So we are at this again, are we? As is usual by now, I listen to every album twice in the first round (if time permits) and write a review. Here we go:

8. Fennesz – Black Sea
Ah, the old conundrum of the ambient album: how much does it’s sense of presence matter? A lot of this music of course does not only feel like background music, but is also partially intended that way. That makes it hard to rate at times. A lot of the appeal to me depends on whether the album can both make me calm while still managing to convey a certain mood or atmosphere. Is this too reductive? Last year’s Moderately Acclaimed entry Submers by Locsil was a prime example. Black Sea only gets there halfway. It certainly has a sense of space and a feel of tranquility, but I miss something to make it stand out, in a way Fennesz’ earlier Venice did. Every now and then it does become special, like in the subtle disruptions of The Colour of Three, or the more darker edges of Grey Scale, but usually it is a fine if unmemorable ambient work for me.

7. Suede – Coming Up
Earlier attempts to get into Suede failed – mostly; I love their song Stay Together. Their iconic debut album did little for me, but somehow their less famous Coming Up does work. It does have the same old weakness, that Suede songs can sound a bit interchangeable to one another, not in the least because Brett Anderson has a way of singing most lines and especially pretty much every chorus the same way: quick, normal tempo, long haul… That’s what you get here too, but somehow I could get into it better now. Maybe because the songs seem to have more cool, as if this band finally gave in and decided that they wanted to fully invest in the “glam” of glam rock. Also, the two most famous songs here, Trash and especially Beautiful Ones deserve their status as Britpop classics. The latter could have been the envy of Bowie and Bolan.

6. Lucy Dacus – Historian
One thing that has made (mostly female) singer-songwriter genre of the late 2010’s so special is that the cloying tendencies that started the decade slowly developed into something much more deeply felt. More and more of the artists also started to dare play with sound. Simple guitar-picking and a steady rhythm won’t do anymore; songs can now have shifting melodies and even movements. This is hardly more clear than with Historian, which contains not a single song that has a one-track mind. On Night Shift we start with a quiet, sardonic telling of a tale, but before you know it you find yourself in drawn-out cries of held-back despair. Dacus knows that a story in music can be more than just words, emotion also comes from changes in music. And that knowledge is what makes Historian another solid entry in the genre.

5. Noir Désir – 666.667 Club
The history of Noir Désir is overshadowed by the fact that it’s lead singer eventually became the murderer of his own girlfriend. Few bands live such a thing down and I’m curious to the status of this band in France nowadays. In certain rock circles they are still held in high esteem though and it is not hard to hear why. If you can shake the dark legacy you will find a great rock album here. Maybe not the most innovative of the nineties (I mean, when Fin de siècle started I thought for a minute we were getting a cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit), but one with great consistency and variety. Above all it has a sense of swagger and cool which was not necessarily something the nineties dealt in all that much. I didn’t look up translation of the lyrics so I hardly know what it is about, but the music is enough. From it’s then-fuzzy, then-crunchy guitars to the masterclass in vocals by Bertrand Cantat (his speedy delivery in L’homme pressé holds a challenge to even the fastest rappers). If like me you can separate the art from the artist you will find a very fine rock album here. It is a testament to the strength of this week that this isn’t even the best rocker in this group of 8.

4. Last Shadow Puppets – The Age of Understatement
During an earlier edition of Moderately Acclaimed, I think two years ago, we had Danger Mouse’ Rome, another album that payed tribute to Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western film themes. The Age of Understatement does this too, but in a far more interesting way. It honors the genre, but isn’t enslaved by it, somehow creating an album that feels far more like a lived-in version of the genre. The music gives these tales drama and tension that are uniquely their own and therefore more authentic than Danger Mouse managed.

3. Edan – Beauty and the Beat
Modern day hardcore hip hop mixed with the sound of the psychedelic sixties? Without irony? I didn’t know I needed it, but now I do. It’s one of those nice cases where I go into an album from this game blind and find myself surprised by what I get. It’s full of surprises, both lyrically and musically and hits hard. If there is one complaint, it is perhaps that I like the most flower power song here, I See Colours, so much I wished there was more of that. Luckily, there is more of other stuff.

2. Lynyrd Skynyrd – (Pronounced ‘Leh-’Nérd ‘Skin-‘Nérd)
Free Bird is one of my favorite songs of all time. From the melancholy first half with heart-felt singing by Ronnie Van Zandt to that massive guitar solo… Although much derided nowadays I think it is deservedly iconic. Still, I never actually heard any other song from the same album (in fact, the only other Lynyrd Skynyrd track I know is Sweet Home Alabama, which I also love). I guess perhaps negative stereotyping of the band as racist rednecks hasn’t helped (to be fair, they did wave the confederate flag on stage). The joke’s on me, because this is rock how I love it: rough, dirty, yet played with competence and feeling. It’s southern rock without the cloying sentimentality or forced bad-ass-ness that sometimes makes the genre hard to take. No, this is spirited and fresh playing and with Ronnie Van Zandt the genre has perhaps it’s most soulful singer. All eight songs are gems, but my favorite discovery has to be Tuesday’s Gone, were the guitar work stands proudly next to Free Bird.

1. Keith Jarrett – The Köln Concert
I really wanted to support Lynyrd Skynyrd, as this forum could use a little love for classic southern rock, but The Köln Concert is just majestic. The backstory is justly famous. In short, Jarrett asked for a specific piano for this concert, but due to a mix-up, an out of tune, partly broken piano was delivered. Many keys were unusable. Although Jarrett initially walked away and cancelled the concert, he was persuaded by the teenage girl that organized to concert to give it a try. This created a challenge for Jarrett: improvising around the unusable keys. I’m not expert enough to hear how he does this, but I know that the end result sounds truly magical. Complex and uplifting and during it’s 66 minutes it never wavers, keeping me in it’s spell. I know jazz snobs sometimes sniff at it, but I think it is a deserved classic.

A simple overview of my votes:

1. Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd) vs. Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert
2. Suede - Coming Up vs. Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement
3. Fennesz - Black Sea vs. Edan - Beauty And The Beat

Winners in red.

1. Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd) vs. Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert

I know The Köln Concert has its fans, but it's always felt directionless and unfocused to me. Lynyrd Skynyrd, on the other hand, is a masterful example of hook-driven guitar rock, the likes of which I find myself appreciating even more now that it's so out of style.

2. Suede - Coming Up vs. Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement

Less a vote for Last Shadow Puppets and more a vote against Suede, which is one of the innumerable Big British Bands that I've never really connected with.

3. Fennesz - Black Sea vs. Edan - Beauty And The Beat

Both very solid albums, but the drones of Fennesz seemed more appropriate as a soundtrack to this feeling of coronavirus dread that's hit the globe.

4. Noir Désir - 666,667 Club vs. Lucy Dacus - Historian

The closest match of the week for me; Noir Désir was a new discovery to me, and I was blown away by how good it was. So I opted to vote for that over Lucy Dacus, but I think Historian is a great album and I could have easily voted the other way.

Their iconic debut album did little for me, but somehow their less famous Coming Up does work.

2. Lynyrd Skynyrd – (Pronounced ‘Leh-’Nérd ‘Skin-‘Nérd)
All eight songs are gems, but my favorite discovery has to be Tuesday’s Gone, were the guitar work stands proudly next to Free Bird.
I know right? Coming Up was the first Suede album that I truly enjoyed - I liked it way more than the first two. The follow up album 'Electricity' is also pretty good and in a similar style.

As for Tuesday's Gone - this was a great song that I only found out about after watching that classic movie 'Dazed And Confused' and its equally classic soundtrack. The song appeared in an iconic scene at the very end - it was such a great blending of cinema and soundtrack that the song could almost have been written for that one scene.
