The Smiths – That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore: 8

I'm not laughing either, but this is meant to be one of the least funny Smiths songs. More of a mixed-feeling songs and these tend to be their best.

479. Blind Blake – Georgia Bound - 5
Why were so many blues musicians blind? ...Anyway, this is a bit more placid than the blues I like.
480. Harry Nilsson - One - 7
481. Randy Newman – It’s a Jungle Out There - 8
I remember my parents watching this. I was a little young for it but I remember enjoying the theme song. Holds up well.
482. Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Barstool Blues - 7
483. The Smiths – That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore - 9
This is a very good song that is completely incongruous with who Morrissey is now as a person.

That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore gets a 9 from me. Ah, irony. Moz knew about that once.

477. The Stone Roses – Begging You 10/10
fasbjd wrote: Sat May 02, 2020 1:02 pm I was a senior in college when Second Coming was released. I was (and am) such a huge fan of their first album and all the singles of that time. I skipped class so I could get the album when the record store opened...and man was I disappointed when I got home. But within all the classic rock riffing, there was this gem. It seems a much more logical progression for the band - a coked-infused version of their ravey 60s psychedelic pop (somewhat similar to what Jesus and Mary Chain had done a few years earlier with Honeys Dead). Unfortunately, there was nothing else like it on the album. But despite the circumstances of it’s release, I still love the song and can always dream of what if.
Couldn't agree more with your assessment!

An absolute classic! This was my also favourite track from the album.

The Wombats – Let’s Dance to Joy Division: 3
Surprised to see this doing so well here. Then again, I was surprised that this became a (minor) hit back then. Just the fact alone that the words of the chorus (Let's dance to Joy Division and celebrate the irony) don't fit the melody is something that annoys me greatly. The guy also has a voice I find irritating. The peppy sound seems like a thin version of thousands of indie pop songs that came before and after.

Hard to rate, because perhaps the words matter a lot here. It oddly sounds like a gypsy song to me, but not one that stands out in particular.

Van Morrison – Almost Independence Day: 7
It's surprising how short these ten minutes feel. Sometimes these long Van Morrison tracks can be mesmerizing or strange, but this one seems to be just an easy time. The lyrics aren't very deep, just waiting for Independence Day, but it with the music it takes on an almost spiritual level.

Yet another Fred. During our current Hymie draught, many candidates try to take the throne, it seems.

487. David Shire – Theme from “The Conversation”
Year: 1974/ 2001*
Album: The Conversation
Biggest Fan: Fred (#851)
* The film is from 1974, but the music was not released separately until 2001.

My favorite song on one of my favorite albums. The run from Listen to the Lion to this one is perfection. As for Almost Independence Day, I love the dreamy, meditative quality...even though it's nearly Independence Day, there seems to be a chill in the air as dusk approaches. I can't help but feel Pink Floyd also held the song in high regard as it clearly was an influence for Wish You Were Here - with the similar guitar lines and the passages where they both scat, mimicking the guitars (not to take anything away from Wish You Were Here which I believe rightly belongs amongst the greatest songs ever written).

David Shire – Theme from “The Conversation”: 8
Starts of jazzy, but turns into a rather obsessive melody. Not even as obsessive as the movie itself suggest, mind. Still, a very good track that sets the mood for one of the great paranoid movies of the seventies.

I feel it could have used a more clear production to make it really pop, but as it stands this is still energetic and bouncy fun.

This is like narcotized department store music, but I suppose this is an above-average example of this sound. "Cherish" a year later, with a soft radio sound, is a 10.
