Albums and Songs of 1974 Poll

Post by Listyguy »

I was there in 1974 at the first Suicide practices
In a loft in New York City
Welcome to the 70s! This month, we will be looking to find the best songs and albums from 1974. If you want to participate, please post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums from that year in this thread. Only the top 20 will be given points, but larger lists are always welcomed and encouraged. On the other end of the spectrum, you need to list at least 5 songs/albums in order for your list to count towards the tabulation.

The top 10 albums and songs from each year will automatically qualify for the final decade poll. Additionally, there will be 50 wild card spots available to the songs and albums that miss the top 10. Wild cards will be determined using the points received in the yearly polls, with the point totals normalized by the number of lists that are submitted in that year. Wild cards also allow songs and albums with unclear release years to receive votes in both years. Points are awarded using this system:

Code: Select all

Rank Points

After Brian Eno (Here Come the Warm Jets is '73 according to AM, '74 according to RYM), now David Bowie is also giving me some worries.

According to RYM Rebel Rebel was already released in Spain in 1973:
https://rateyourmusic.com/release/singl ... bitch_f10/

But I will vote for the song here as if it were 1974 anyway...

Yeah, please don't let ambiguous release years stop you from voting for something! Especially when nobody voted for "Rebel Rebel" last month.

*Bruce Springsteen's "The Fever" may not be eligible since it wasn't "officially" released until 1999. It was "unofficially" released to DJs in major markets throughout the U.S. circa 1974 by Springsteen's producer Mike Appel (against record company wishes), and received heavy airplay in many areas (including mine), which is why I choose to leave it on my 1974 list.

Please feel free to remove it and move everything else up one should you choose; doesn't matter at all to me.

Thanks... albums later!

I have a question about No Woman, No Cry. The version which gets the most acclaim is the one on Bob Marley’s “Live!” which came out in 1975, the year where I was going to rank the song. Is it okay if I ranked it in the ‘75 poll since that version is considered the definite one? (as well as my favorite)

Albums
1. John Coltrane - Interstellar Space
2. Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information
3. The Residents - Meet The Residents
4. The Velvet Underground - 1969: The Velvet Underground Live
5. Joni Mitchell - Court And Spark

Songs
1. Patti Smith - Hey Joe
2. George McCrae - Rock Your Baby
3. Al Green - Take Me To The River
4. Joni Mitchell - Help Me
5. Ohio Players - Fire

We follow the main site on these matters, so all versions of a song are considered one. With that said, if you were to vote for "No Woman, No Cry" next month, its points would be combined with those it gets this month. If it finishes in the top 10 for 1974 though, it would be a moot point.
