The Clash - The Street Parade: 6
By this stage in the band's career we could expect more light experiments with world music. I like this bands willingness to explore different sounds, although this lightly likable song is not one of their more memorable efforts.

Strange, truly experimental, but oddly appealing.
Against Me! – Black Me Out: 8
Powerful. I haven't heard the album since it came out, but am giving it another spin right now. Angry punk at its best.

I'm sorry to all people who are put off by this song. This was back when I kinda liked Trump, but now that I don't, the song itself holds up pretty well.
My ex-gf brainwashed me with conservative propaganda so that's the only reason I used to like him.

Indeed, though if you read further their feud already began when Trump sued Miller over the use of his name on this very song!Wezzo wrote: ↑Mon Aug 10, 2020 2:35 pm Looks like Mac Miller denounced Trump when he entered the 2016 Presidential race: https://edition.cnn.com/2016/03/11/poli ... ald-trump/
Anyway, the line "Take over the world when I'm on my Donald Trump shit" has not exactly aged well, but it is obvious that this all has nothing to do with Trump's politics. That doesn't make the song much more enjoyable, though as it sounds like a fairly standard rap song of a type that just doesn't appeal to me, despite sampling Sufjan Stevens.

The Weeknd – King of the Fall: 2
Absolutely not my cup of tea. I already don't like The Weeknd much, but this song is particularly tiresome. It drags, is oddly repetitive, has an off-puting tone (like some auto-tune-like buzz over the whole song) and I have long since reached my limit of modern R&B where the lyrics are about nothing else than how amazing the artist is and how little other people are worth (especially the women). I really don't get the appeal of that stuff.

Marlena Shaw – Woman of the Ghetto: 8
Although not quite unprecedented, it is remarkable how much this song (which seems to be rather unknown as far as I can tell) is a precursor to some epic soul songs of the city that we would find in the years that came after this one: Marvin Gaye's Inner City Blues, War's The World is a Ghetto or Stevie Wonder's Living for the City for example. And this is hardly a lesser song than these. Very powerful, with a great voice.

Re: Biggest Fan - August 2020
First off, it’s Yankovic, not Yankovich. There’s a hard “c.” Secondly, this is one of his very best. An easy 9.
Also, Weird Al by itself is spelled without quotations. That’s only if you’re writing his full name, “Weird Al” Yankovic. Common mistake!

Re: Biggest Fan - August 2020
Here to join in the pedantry, even though I'm far more error-prone than most! The Clash's album is Sandinista! as in the rebel army opposed to Nicaraguan dictator Somoza and the Contras as led by Daniel Ortega, the country's current autocratic president. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss and all that...
I think The Clash - The Street Parade as one for the fans, mainly for giving a rare insight into Joe Strummer's feelings, even if they go no further than "Fame sure is alienating, I wish I could blend into the crowd". I would've welcomed more Clash tunes with steel pans, which lead in nicely into the marimbas on Inca Roads on the BF playlist. 8.5
The Flaming Lips - Powerless 5
Against Me! - Black Me Out 6
Mac Miller - Donald Trump 5
The Weeknd - King of the Fall 3
Marlena Shaw - Woman of the Ghetto: 8.5 for the original studio version, which is the only version that counts here but 9 for the 1973 live at Montreux recording with her funny/soulful vocal introduction of her bandmates at the start and her powerhouse delivery of the line "Remember me cos I'm the one who had your babies, I" sampled in 90s big-beat one-hit-wonder Remember Me by Blueboy. I'm posting both songs below because why not:

Sorry for all that waffling, "Weird Al" Yankovic - Frank's 2000'' TV earns a 6 from me.

Nowadays large TV's are pretty much the norm, so the joke here has almost gone lost. I didn't think it wasn't that funny of a joke anyway. The song itself straddles the line of annoying. I'm not huge on Weird Al, as may be clear because I don't keep up with the various rules that apply to spelling his name, but some of his songs are undeniably clever. I just don't think this is one of them.
