AMF Favorite Books 2020 Edition: Voting Thread

Post by BleuPanda »

I'm just going to copy most of the rules from the previous voting thread.

What is eligible?
Here is what we've decided will be eligible and ineligible:
Eligible:
-Fiction novels
-Short story collections
-Plays
-Epics
-Graphic novels

Ineligible:
-Nonfiction books
-Religious texts

How long must lists be?
Lists must have a minimum of 10 entries in order to be used for this poll. On the other side, 100 books is the maximum that will be used for the poll itself, but longer lists are always welcomed.

What about series of books/trilogies?
Please vote for series and trilogies as a single entity (i.e. they only take up one slot on your list).

What is the formula?
We will be using this formula for tabulating the results:
100*(1+10)/(position+10)

How long will this be open?
This poll will tentatively stay opened until August 31st, 2020. This is to encourage those participating to read a few more books between the deadline and now. If there is a general consensus that everyone wants more time, the deadline will be extended.

Please post your final list in this thread; I will also be creating a recommendation thread

BleuPanda, I assume that graphic novels are eligible as well, as Watchmen placed in our last poll. I think your original post should be updated to mention that.

Also, although it placed very highly in our last poll, I believe that we later determined Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" to be ineligible, as it is a work of non-fiction.

Eh, I'd disagree. I think a non-fiction book poll all to itself would be great, but I think non-fiction books and fiction books are way too "apples and oranges" to be listed together.

I updated the first post to include graphic novels.

I think including non-fiction would cast the net too wide. I feel like poetry collections are also in the same boat?

Honestly, my ideal would to be to cut out plays and graphic novels as well, but I also don't think they're big enough on their own here to justify their own poll. Especially with Watchmen's success in the last, it would feel weird to exclude it this time.

As for Fear and Loathing, I swore I had a big conversation a couple months back on whether it was fictional, and The Greatest Books recently moved it from the non-fiction to fiction section, but I haven't read it myself so I don't actually have any idea.

I don’t like the idea of not allowing poetry collections either, especially considering that I planned to put Howl and Other Poems in my top five. But it’s your poll and I totally understand that.

Okay, after reading a bit more into it, I think I'm now fairly confident that the book should be classified as a "novel with strong autobiographical elements". Therefore, eligible for this poll.

I feel like part of the reason to reduce the number of categories is to make sure we're all drawing from the same pool, since overlap is a necessity for works to actually place in the final results (and what we have is already a gigantic range). With the current categories, this is essentially a 'written narrative fiction' poll. I feel like plays are often read the same way as novels by many, and graphic novels have a limited enough pool that it's eligible largely for Watchmen and a handful of others. My problem with including poetry and non-fiction is it increases the size of the pool by a large amount and in such a way that certain people may be inclined to fill their ballot with works that won't overlap. Even though they are all literature, I feel like narrative fiction, poetry, and non-fiction are three distinct forms that many find difficult to directly compare.

I'm not saying this to be against the two mediums; really, I think the best option would be to make separate polls for all three (which I would not run due to my lack of familiarity with the two forms; I imagine individual poems would be easier to survey than entire collections?)

I don't know if there is any clamour for it but a non-fiction poll would be right up my alley!

BleuPanda,

My list has books 1 through 10 ranked, and then books 11 through 100 listed unranked, in alphabetical order. I read quite a few books during college (The Kite Runner, Me Talk Pretty One Day & Never Let Me Go were a few favorites) but then stopped from 2013-2018 when I moved back to Vietnam. Only in 2019 & 2020 have I started reading seriously again and based on the ones I come across - mostly books written by Vietnamese-American or Asian-American authors.

01. Viet Thanh Nguyen - The Sympathizer
02. Ted Chiang - Stories of Your Life & Others
03. Ocean Vuong - On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous
04. Yaa Gyasi - Homegoing
05. Ted Chiang - Exhalation
06. Amor Towles - A Gentleman in Moscow
07. Colson Whitehead - The Nickel Boys
08. Thi Bui - The Best We Could Do
09. Min Jin Lee - Pachinko
10. Kazuo Ishiguro - Never Let Me Go

I will post my list before the deadline. I wonder if in this era of "wokeness" classic but problematic titles will still place high on the final result. I'm sure if an all-time film poll will be held today "Gone with the Wind"'s placing will fall down from the previous poll.

Considering 7 of us still voted for Harry Potter so far, I doubt "wokeness" will have much of an effect. I'm pretty sure we were all aware of problematic subject matter in classics in previous polls, and it's not like stuff like Gone With the Wind only now became controversial (not to mention GWTW likely benefited from the format of that last poll, which pulled from our decade polls if I remember correctly - it jumped over 500 places from the 2012 poll, after all). We generally appreciate these works despite their flaws.

I'm considering adjusting the formula a bit...I feel like #1 being worth ten times as much as #100 feels kind of steep? I was thinking of using 100*(1+23.75)/(rank+23.75), which results in #1 being only five times as strong as #100. This also removes what looked like some extreme drops near the top. In the previous formula, #1 is twice as much as #12. In my new formula, #1 is twice as much as #25.

It just feels like, with the previous formula, a book would need at least one high rank even if it landed on a bunch of lists at lower positions. Considering how wide of a pool we're drawing from for this, I think any mention is significant - #100 isn't low at all. I'm also on the side of favoring consensus over a few strong opinions (though I will likely start this off with a section on everyone's favorite which did not receive another vote).

If anyone objects to this, please let me know, but I'm strongly leaning toward this adjusted formula.

This would place highly in my non-fiction list but while parts of it may or may not be artistic licence, it isn't fictional.

I have to admit that there are several titles on my list (I think there are not six, but ... nine!) that it is very questionable to consider them as "fiction novels":

1. Stefan Zweig: Die Welt von Gestern: Erinnerungen eines Europäers (The World of Yesterday. Memories of a European) – Austria, 1942
19. George Orwell: Homage to Catalonia – UK, 1938
40. Heda Margolius Kovály: Na vlastní kůži (Under a Cruel Star: A Life in Prague 1941-1968) – Czechoslovakia, 1973
41. Helene Hanff: 84, Charing Cross Road – USA, 1970
65. Javier Cercas: El monarca de las sombras – Spain, 2017
76. Enrique Vila-Matas: Bartleby y compañía (Bartleby & Co.) – Spain, 2000
89. Chil Rajchman: Zijroines (The Last Jew of Treblinka: A Memoir) - Poland, 2009
96. Primo Levi: Se questo è un uomo (If This is a Man) – Italy, 1947
98. Groucho Marx: Memoirs of a Mangy Lover – USA, 1963

So, I think they could be deleted from the list and add these others, if you consider it appropiate:

1. James Purdy: Narrow Rooms - USA, 1978
2. Philipe Claudel: L'Archipel du Chien - France, 2018
3. Peter Cameron: City of your Final Destination - USA, 2002
4. Lola Lafon: La petite communiste qui ne souriait jamais (The Little Communist Who Never Smiled) - France, 2014
5. Philip Roth: Goodbye, Columbus - USA, 1959
6. Andrés Barba: República luminosa (A Lominous Republic) – Spain, 2017
7. Henry James: Daisy Miller - USA, 1878
8. Georges Simenon: La Vérité sur Bébé Donge (The Truth About Bebe Donge) - France, 1942
9. Robert Louis Stevenson: The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde – UK, 1886

2. Philipe Claudel: L'Archipel du Chien - France, 2018
3. Peter Cameron: City of your Final Destination - USA, 2002
4. Lola Lafon: La petite communiste qui ne souriait jamais (The Little Communist Who Never Smiled) - France, 2014
5. Philip Roth: Goodbye, Columbus - USA, 1959
6. Andrés Barba: República luminosa (A Lominous Republic) – Spain, 2017
7. Henry James: Daisy Miller - USA, 1878
8. Georges Simenon: La Vérité sur Bébé Donge (The Truth About Bebe Donge) - France, 1942
9. Robert Louis Stevenson: The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde – UK, 1886

Thank you for helping! I'll make sure to add the additional books in the file.

9. Robert Louis Stevenson: The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde – UK, 1886

Uhh...47. Etgar Keret: Seven Good Years: A Memoir – Israel, 2013 is also a memoir, right? So you have another free open slot if that's the case.

18 lists so far and no votes for In Search of Lost Time. Have any of us actually read it? I read Swann's Way at the beginning of the year but haven't felt the urge to return. The only part I really cared for was the opening chapter...

I've not read it myself. Ulysses and In Search of Lost Time (and to a lesser extent War and Peace) are all books that I want to read but haven't sought out yet because they're so long.

I'm someone who loves long, long books (my list is full of them), and even I haven't read this one. It's 4,200 pages!!

The length has put me off too. Once I begin to read a book, I rarely quit, so this would be quite an undertaking. I have however quit Ulysses more than once, because I just couldn't get onto the right wavelength; I believe that when I do get into it, I will enjoy it.

I finally finished my list! I kept switching the Top 2, they might as well be tied. I know only the Top 100 count, but I just couldn't leave the others out, so I made a Top 200 (and I'm still sure I forgot something). First is the rank followed by author, original title, the translated title (if there is one) and the release year (only in the very old ones it refers to the date it's estimated to have been written).
I have tons of old German literature in my list; I'm currently making my way through German literary history and I'm currently at 1820, which explains. There's certainly not enough non-Western literature and literature written by women in here, which will probably change once I get to the 20th century. Currently there's only three works written by women in the Top 100 (Harper Lee, Elfriede Jelinek and Dawn Cook). This whole thing is a work in progress, but the list for the poll is final.

200 | Andreas Gryphius | Catharina von Georgien. Oder Bewehrete Beständigkeit | 1657

A few statistics (Any discrepancy in the numbers is due to me being unable to count and too lazy to re-count, but I guess the tendency is clear):

12 Works:
William Shakespeare

11 Works:
Johann Wolfgang Goethe

10 Works:
Friedrich Schiller

6 Works:
Stephen King

5 Works:
Clemens Brentano
Franz Kafka
Heinrich von Kleist

4 Works:
Samuel Beckett
Georg Büchner
Friedrich Dürrenmatt
Max Frisch
Gotthold Ephraim Lessing
Ludwig Tieck

3 Works:
Edward Bond
Joseph von Eichendorff
Theodor Fontane
Andreas Gryphius
Hartmann von Aue
E.T.A. Hoffmann
Thomas Mann
Arthur Schnitzler
Christoph Martin Wieland

2 Works:
Bertolt Brecht
Michael Ende
Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen
Heinrich Heine
Gottfried Keller
Friedrich Maximilian Klinger
Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz
Heinrich Mann
Adalbert Stifter
Johann Karl Wezel
Wolfram von Eschenbach

Shakespeare as my favorite author is probably not news to the German speakers here, because my user name is the literal German translation of that name.

Before 1500: 9
1500-1599: 8
1600-1699: 17
1700-1799: 42
1800-1899: 52
1900-1999: 69
2000-2099: 3

Well, considering one fifth of the century is already over, I should start getting into contemporary literature...

Novel: 73
Story: 32
Story collection: 4
Epic: 11
Play: 79
Graphic novel (well, technically): 1
Novel series: 2

I didn't think plays would edge out novels, but considering that I spent a few years reading tons of plays, it shouldn't be a surprise.

Finally, thanks to BleuPanda for running this!

This is non-fiction, correct? I haven't read it, so is there an argument for its inclusion here?
