Results: Top 150 Artists of the 2010's

Post by Rob »

There were some delays along the way but I’m happy to finally present the top 150 artists of the 2010’s. These were the people we enjoyed most listening to during the past decade, defining our lives with their sounds. There is a great variety of styles presented here, proving once again that the 2010’s were not as easy to pigeonhole in genres as one might be lead to believe.

Let’s first thank the following 36 people for voting in this poll:

- acroamor
- Akhenaten
- andy1010
- ArcadeFire
- Arselan
- BleuPanda
- bonnielaurel
- Chris K.
- Cold Butterfly
- Dan
- Edre Peraza
- Father2theMan
- Franklotion
- Gillingham
- Henry
- Holden
- Honorio
- Jackson
- LunarPiper
- Madzong
- mcfearless
- Michel
- Mileswide
- Moonbeam
- Nassim
- Neil
- PlasticRam
- prosecutorgodot
- Rob
- Rocky Raccoon
- Schüttelbirne
- sonofsamiam
- Toni
- votingbloc
- Wezzo
- Wisnu Tirta Aji

Together they voted for no less than 804 separate artists! Nonetheless, I wanted the final list to contain only artist who had at least 2 votes and in contrast to our recent decade polls for songs and albums I wanted a round final number and the first that showed up was #150. To give some more context, with only a single vote that would be at #1 you would end up at #187 in the list.

A few notes before the countdown starts:

- In my naivety I didn’t notice upfront that some people voted for similar people in different ways. For example Killer Mike is in Run the Jewels, but also had some solo work released. Some people voted for both Run the Jewels and Killer Mike separately, some for one of both and some made a combination under the guise “Killer Mike/ Run the Jewels”. Since I saw it too late and there were already too many delays I decided to think of a solution myself instead of questioning the forum. I decided to solve this by counting as they appeared in the list. So a vote for “Killer Mike/ Run the Jewels” was added to both Killer Mike as well as Run the Jewels, but a lone vote for Killer Mike just went to him as a solo artist. For the final list this only affected the ranking of indeed Killer Mike and Run the Jewels as well as Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming (which also received votes under Shabaka Hutchings, but he doesn’t appear solo in the final list). Whether this is the right way of handling this is up for debate, but I’m sticking with it.

- Most of the presentation should be clear as what it means, but after “Albums in the AMF EOD Poll” there is always a curious word or sentence followed by the main voter(s). This is for the biggest fan(s) of the artist and the word/ sentence is a song title I thought worked in praise of the artist. Yes, I ripped this off from Moonbeam’s eighties poll. By the way, the biggest fan is either highest rank, or anyone who had said artist in his or her top 10.

- One thing you might miss is a comparison with our artist ranking with the one currently on AM. I initially wanted to include this, but since AM does not include the last two years of the decade yet and has likewise not included the EOD lists I feel that the current list doesn’t represent the critical standing of many artists enough to make this a meaningful inclusion.

I'll do 30 a day, so it will take until Sunday. Let’s start, shall we?

Great presentation, it must’ve taken a while to collect all those playlists!

I can’t speak for Sons of Kemet et. al. But I think your point distribution for Killer Mike/Run the Jewels seems like the ideal.

Sorry for making your life difficult with the Killer Mike / Run the Jewels double listing! This was a unique situation given Killer Mike's RAP Music - one of my favorites of the decade - was produced by El-P, so it was in a way a Run the Jewels project. It's a similar situations to how I give credit for the mid-90s solo albums of Wu-Tang Clan members to the group in my artists lists given they were all produced by RZA and feature many other members of the group.

I included Run the Jewels, Killer Mike, and El-P on my list so you’re not alone on that, sorry Rob for any trouble that caused!

I’d definitely include all those solo albums to the overall Wu-Tang discography by the way

That's it for today. Tomorrow #90 to #61.

By the way, our first of the day, The Gaslight Anthem, was the last to get in with just two votes. By now, that has become impossible, as we passed the 200 points mark.

Biggest surprise here to me was that Weyes Blood made it "only" to #91 after the huge success of Titanic Rising last year on this forum. I thought that would boost her up further. And to make create a sort of cliffhanger for tomorrow, the #90 is a similar case of an artist who you might expect to see way higher.

On the other hand, Fiona Apple cracking the top 100 with only one album released is certainly a measurement of the popularity of The Idler Wheel... Of course we already saw D'Angelo and A Tribe Called Quest pulling of something similar, but they didn't make the top 100. Another teaser: there is one more artist coming up tomorrow who made it even higher with just one album released in the decade. Any ideas who it could be?

Happy to see Holly Herndon and Colin Stetson just making the top 100. Both not obvious choices.

It's gotta be Daft Punk, right? Or do they not count with the Tron: Legacy soundtrack?

Rob, I'mma presume you're counting Tunes 2011-2019 as an album and plump for Burial? Have to say an ace presentation's been made even better by you crowning me as one of your queens :romance-kisscheek:

Technically Burial did not release a single album this decade and yes, I do count soundtracks as albums, so Daft Punk and Burial are not who I'm referring to. Besides, whether Daft Punk and Burial make it remains to be seen!

There were not as many voters in this poll as some of our other polls, and some of the people who did vote are newer to AM, so these results should be unpredictable. A few random thoughts:

Jenny Hval missing the top 100 is a disappointment as she was fairly prolific and consistently excellent throughout the decade.

I'm curious on the Weezer placement, as some of my friends are diehard Weezer fans but they universally hate most of their 2010s output.

I would not have guessed that I was the biggest fan for Weyes Blood.

Slowdive? The Avalanches? SZA? None of those seems particularly likely to me.

Daft Punk and Burial are definitely making it!

Now that you say that I’ve figured it out, but surprises me that Tom Waits didn’t make it...

This is definitely an oddity, but there in another one coming up later today whose glory days were in past decades and whose 2010's output is generally much maligned (and like Weezer did not have an album or song ranked). Who is it? Find out at #88. (I'm full of teasers at the moment).

Not having voted but being a diehard Weezer fan, I'll say this about their 2010s output. Weezer put out their two strongest albums since the 90s in the last 10 years. They just also released 5 other albums that range from mediocre to terrible in the same time span.

Re: Results: Top 150 Artists of the 2010's

That was today's output. A few reflections:

- The highest ranked artist with only one album released is indeed Billie Eilish. I guess mileswide and Holden eventually saw it coming, but it is kind of interesting that thought initially went out to veteran artists with late-career releases, while the real reason that Eilish released only one album was of course that she debuted only in 2019. So alas, no Tom Waits, The Avalanches, Slowdive or SZA. Of these, only Slowdive came close to the final list. The others did poorly, I'm afraid.

- Of course, Eilish is outranked by the only person to rank without releasing any album at all: Burial. To make things even crazier, he still managed to place two works on our album list. Nothing can stop this man.

- Green Day is the highest ranked artist on the list without either a song or album ranking in our poll. It was also the biggest surprise for me to see them at all. I lost track of them after the disappointing ¡Uno! and have not heard anybody say anything positive about their subsequent output, but apparently it found some fans here.

- The biggest surprise among underperformers today to me is Perfume Genius. I thought he was adored on this forum and thought at least a spot in the top 50 was guaranteed, but here we have him at #90, with no ranking higher than #27. Just a case of bad luck of the right people not showing up to vote?

- I don't have many good teasers for tomorrow. We'll quickly find the last artist who did not have an album rank in our EOD poll. However, we won't meet the artist with no song ranked tomorrow, that one is way up higher. Who could these people be?

Billie Eilish did have the Don't Smile at Me EP in 2017, which is what initially sparked her popularity.

I would guess the "no songs" one is Laura Marling though a top 30 placement sounds surprising (but so would not making to the top 150)

Yes, but as should be clear with the Burial example, I didn't count the EP's for this mind game.

This is both surprising and not surprising. Ever since 21st Century Breakdown I can say that Green Day has been very disappointing. That being said I am a huge fan of their older material and love them. Even though the Trilogy was a bloated mess, I still feel like there is around 12 good songs sprinkled throughout. Revolution Radio was also underwhelming but did produce one of their best songs "Bang Bang" and the epic "Forever Now". So I kinda feel indifferent about them in the past decade. If Father of All came out in 2019 then they would not have made my list because that album blows.

I feel the exact same way about the trilogy and Father of All. I have a slightly different take on RevRad but only slightly.

Re: Results: Top 150 Artists of the 2010's

Post by Rob »

That's it for today. Only the last 30 to go. Tomorrow we'll know out collective favorite artists of the last 10 years!

Some thoughts on today's additions:

- We have talked about underachievers, but by now we see some artist perform above expectations. Who saw First Aid Kit at #40 coming? It also seems a ranking unique for Acclaimed Music. I also didn't think CHVRCHES would make the top 50 and surpass most more prominent pop star like Taylor Swift, Ariane Grande and Charli XCX.

- Then there is Katy Perry, certainly also an overachiever here. Although a hugely successful artist I never even noticed the faintest hint that she had any popularity on this forum. I mean, that she had no album ranked is perhaps not a big surprise as she is more a single artist than an album one, but even those singles didn't do all that well in our song poll, with only one song ranking. Nobody made a guess about who the highest rank artist without an album could be, but I have my doubt that anyone considered Katy Perry.

- During the process of compiling this list Flying Lotus had a strange journey. In the first half of the lists I entered he appeared a lot. So much so that he seemed to be heading to place near or even in the top 10. In the second half of the process though, he suddenly stopped appearing in lists altogether, excepting the second-to-last list I entered. Weird, but it kept him down in the end, even if #46 is still a respectable spot.

- Senseless trivia: M83 are the first act to appear who had a top 10 ranking in one of or other EOD polls: with Midnight City appearing in the top 10 songs. They were quickly followed by Daft Punk. None of the artists with an album in the top 10 have appeared yet, but of course it's all but certain that they will!

- I really had to resist to use a still from Cats with Taylor Swift. No, I don't have anything against her, but it almost seemed too funny.

- Carly Rae Jepsen had easily the widest selection of song titles that I could use for the Biggest Fans descriptions. Nobody comes even close.

- Courtney Barnett has the best still.

Oh yes, you're right. For some reason I had in my head that it was just sub-ten (even after correctly adding the information in my very presentation). So that's one down I guess.

Slight correction: Ariana, not Ariane.

It's funny to me that I'm the biggest fan of CRJ, but I didn't vote for any of those songs.

This is one of the funniest polls we've ever run in a way. Green Day and Coldplay as top 100 2010s acts, and Katy Perry over the likes of Joanna Newsom? I certainly agree that some of these don't really seem to represent the forum, which isn't surprising given the lower number of voters. It will be interesting to compare this list to an approach that applies a formula to our songs/albums EOD lists.

I am a fan of a lot of these placements too, like The Roots and Andy Stott placing better than they might elsewhere. Taylor Swift seems like an underperformer especially relative to some of the other pop acts considering how well she did in some of the other polls. James Blake was also an underperformer as I'd consider him one of the most influential musicians to debut in the 10s.

I only half agree. I do think this list has it share of odd moments, but in broad lines I feel that the rankings make sense. And while 36 participants is certainly not on par with our EOD song and album polls, it is still a solid enough number to get results that should represent the forum. There was a wide variety of lists too. Without naming names, there were lists that had a focus on our usual suspects, there were lists which mainly paid tributes to heroes of earlier decades, there were "arty" lists, poptimist lists, lists that skewered to the later years of the 2010's with mostly still very young artists (young even for this decade) and even a few lists with a lot of names that are frankly obscure. It felt balanced enough for me.

And don't forget that artist poll some years ago (2016 I think?), when all of a sudden the likes of Limp Bizkit, Nickelback and similar popular names never mentioned on this forum suddenly placed.

Re: Results: Top 150 Artists of the 2010's

So, that's it!

A few last notes:

- Kendrick Lamar at #1, with even Kanye West not really coming close. Lamar took the lead during compiling from pretty much the start and it was obvious to me long before I had done the final calculations that he would win. And why not? Whether or not you think he is the best, there is something to be said for him being the quintessential 2010 artist. Not only does he represent it's most popular genre, hip-hop, but Lamar also reflected on many of the most important themes of the decade, collaborated with many of it's greatest themes, while maintaining an interest to diversify his sound. No artist could hope to even come close to capture a whole decade as it was experiences by everyone, but Lamar might have done it the best. He wasn't in my own top 10, but he did make my list, despite me not being the biggest hip-hop fan on the forum by a long shot.

- Probably the most notable thing in this final list is the top 10 placement of Lorde. I didn't see it coming and I doubt anyone else did. I always thought she would make top 30 or something, but #10? Good job!

- Equally notable: Janelle Monàe at #3. Like Lorde I thought she would do well, but this well. In fact, during compiling I had a strong feeling Beyoncé might make top 5. The places that Monáe and Beyoncé ended up in are more or less a swap of my expectations.

- Lower on the list we find another overachiever in Laura Marling, at #29. Although she tends to get great reviews she has a tendency to be ignored by the same critics once list-making time arrives. RateYourMusic is also unkind to her. Seeing her do great here is a small victory for one of my favorites. As Nassim already guessed, she is the highest ranked artist without a song on our EOD poll.

- The worst still of the whole presentation has to be the one for Radiohead. It turns out it is surprisingly hard to find decent stills of them from the 2010's were all band members are clearly visible. What's up with that?

- Here is a collection of some noteable names that did not make the top 150, with their eind position in brackets: Wilco (#156), Oneohtrix Point Never (#169), Miley Cyrus (#170), Paramore (#193), Christine & the Queens (#211), Nicolas Jaar (#218), Wolf Alice (#219), Rihanna (#221), Ty Segall (#282), Thee Oh Sees (#283), ANOHNI (#284), Earl Sweatshirt (#292), Justin Bieber (#339), Anderson .Paak (#359), Anaïs Mitchell (#384), Denzel Curry (#450), King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (#460). Any you thought would make it, but missed the cut?

- The most streamed artist of all time on Spotify is also a very 2010 artist, but he did not make our list: Ed Sheeran. Not that I ever thought he would make it. Even his final placement of (#275) seems surprisingly high, considering he is a non-presence on this forum.
