MCCh 2020 (15) August 31

Post by Otisredding »

The best albums of 2020 (update August 31)

The numbers presented next to each album title are the weighted average rating, and, in brackets, average and number of ratings (out of 32 included sources). The weighted average is based on a formula that includes a) the average of ratings and b) the number of sources that have rated the album.

The magazines I used for the ratings were:
EUR + Australia: Gaffa-dk; Gaffa-sw; Humo; Indiestyle; Jenesaispop; Laut; Mondosonoro; Musikexpress; Nojesguiden; Ondarock; Plattentests; Sentire Ascoltare; The Music
UK: Clash; DIY; God Is In The Tv; Load And Quiet; Music OMH; The Guardian; The Line Of Best Fit; The Skinny
USA + Canada: Allmusic; Consequence Of Sound; Earbuddy; Exclaim!; Nothern Transmissions; Paste; Pitchfork; Popmatters; Rolling Stone; Spectrum Culture; Under The Radar

Highlights: Rob makes the top three songs from the album according to Allmusic, Consequence of Sound, Jenesaispop, Plattentests, The Skinny, etc…

Out of curiosity what was Fiona Apple’s new score? What source? I see it didn’t fall by more than 0,01 as the score hasn’t changed.

So I check out metacritic’s site every now and then. I’ve noticed that your rankings fall in really close to how they have theirs ranked based (obviously) on critical acclaim. I’m just wondering why Rose City Band’s ‘Summerlong’ is not on your list yet. Meta critic has a current score of 95. Is it perhaps that there are not enough reviews to qualify? Just curious. Thanks for all you do here Otisredding. One of my favorite forums.

Here is the updated playlist:

The Microphones in 2020 is still not on Spotify. Here it is on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7BkabF31ak

The highlights should be added to Otisreddings' post soon.

Not much to say, except that I wish I saw that Nubya Garcia two days earlier, because it would have made my album cover list for the poll. It's the best of the year so far.

Disappointingly low debuts in the chart for Microphones in 2020 and Inner Song.

You would have thought lockdown would have encouraged musicians to write and record more music but not many new entries, especially in the top 20.
