I saw that this morning too, and immediately went to their website - the list is not up yet. I don't think the print issue is coming out for a couple of weeks so I wouldn't expect to see the list for a while.

I confess I'm not as excited about this as I would have been a few years ago. What I'm hoping for is that this is a completely new list, unlike the "update" they did in 2012 (which was basically the original 2003 list with about a dozen randomly interspersed new entries from their best-of-the-2000s list).

Better Bruce than U2

Ooooh boy. I was heartened by their EOD lists so this could be good. I’m more interested in them revamping their 500 songs list, but this has definitely piqued my interest as well

Obviously, someone will need to transcribe and post.

And, cue the collective apoplectic outrage of internet music geeks (including me, I'm afraid) right off the bat:

#500 is Arcade Fire's Funeral.

I'll transcribe it because I have some time.
Just so nobody else does the same and it would be for nothing...

Not only that, but a Harry Styles solo album is ranked at #491! I know Rolling Stone is going to be Rolling Stone, but I had hoped to get further than 10 albums in before closing my browser tab in annoyance.

Here it is.
The list offers a few nice suprises (Lauryn Hill in the Top 10!), but otherwise it's pretty standard.
A few of the issues I have:
- Some artists have too many albums here: The Beatles (9), Bob Dylan (8), Neil Young (7), The Rolling Stones (6)
- I didn't read the entries they wrote, but apparently nobody double-checked the orthography. Lynyrd Skynyrd released their debut album in 1937, if you didn't know (and it's not just one mistake, it's quite a lot. I hope I've found them all, if not please let me know).
- The (almost) complete absence of non-English-language acts is horrible and questionable from a cultural viewpoint.
- Far too many compilations! Recognizing compilations in a list like this seems wrong to me generally.
- Instead of being criticized for only recognizing Rock music, they now added a lot of Rap and R&B, which is a good thing, but the list is still not nearly diverse enough to be taken seriously.
- They sadly seem to believe Wynton Marsalis saying Jazz is practically dead after 1970.

Re: Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time (2020 edition)

Post by Harold »

Thanks for getting this transcribed so quickly!

I did jump straight to the top 50 when I visited the RS website. I'm sure the rest of the list will confirm the initial impression that this is a fascinating and frustrating effort by RS to revamp the canon (I have no doubt they're already receiving hate from old-school fans just for dropping Sgt. Pepper's... to #24, and their new #1 is a really interesting choice although it would not have been mine) while still remaining Rolling Stone. It's certain to generate much debate, in a way RS hasn't been able to for quite a while.

Next question re: music sources not as relevant as they once were: when will Pitchfork finally do an all-time top 500 list?

Doing a quick scan, looks like Bob Dylan has the most entries (8; includes an album with The Band); the Beatles and Rolling Stones follow, with seven and six, respectively, followed by Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin (five each). Among others with multiple entries, Stevie Wonder, Prince and The Who have four. If anyone else should be in there, please advise. (I imagine someone will post a complete list of acts with multiple entries.) Thanks. :P

Among females, Aretha Franklin and Joni Mitchell look to have the most (4), with the following scoring three each: Madonna, Janet Jackson and Fiona Apple. M's Like a Prayer is lower than on the initial list, though The Immaculate Collection and Ray of Light made nice jumps. Not many compilations on the list, which further shows how the reverence of Immaculate .

Note: Beyoncé has two solo albums, and one with Destiny's Child. No surprise that her self-titled set and Lemonade were top 100- not necessarily my favorites, though they were very well-received.

I mean, such a list will never be perfect, but I much prefer this to the original list. I like Rolling Stone courting hot takes over paying lip service to the rock establishment. Couldn't even imagine them putting Shakira or Boyz II Men on a list like this before, but here we are.

A look at the voters shows it skews a lot younger and a lot more toward contemporary pop, indie, R&B, and rap. I haven’t checked who voted the first time but I have a feeling there won’t be a ton of overlap.

The three 2019 albums have two logical choices and also Kid Cudi. Haven’t listened to it myself but also haven’t seen a lot of critical acclaim for it.

No offense to Drake fans but Take Care might be the most overrated album on the list...

This is a lot more interesting than I would have expected, especially after their last update to the list essentially kept the same order at the top. Moving Sgt. Pepper's down to 24, and below two other Beatles albums, is a nice way of making up for previously overrating that album at #1 and perhaps marks a definitive symbolic shift in the canon away from that album. I like that they integrated a lot of 2010s albums, even if I don't necessarily agree with all their picks. Hip-hop is perhaps better represented on here than on any other major all-time list, with T50 placements for 36 Chambers, Low End Theory, Illmatic, TPAB, MBDTF, and Auqemini. Female artists seem to have much better representation than they did on the previous list. It's not like it's the most amazing list I've ever seen, but it's at least an attempt to get away from just catering to the Boomer audience.

It's interesting list
As it is a new list and not a copy of the previous list with the inclusion of 10 new albums, it is already a good thing.
Even with the inclusion of more artists outside the rock niche, I have the impression that rock artists with pitchfork profiles like Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Iggy Pop were more valued in this list.
The various appearances of Fiona Apple surprised me. Björk, Kate Bush, Erykah Badu and Massive Attack also did very well.

The fact that "Aretha Franklin" is more prominent than "The Who" shows that the publication stopped treating non-rock genres as a supporting cast.

This list made me curious about the update of the music list

... If Pitchfork continues to aim to review all the decades' lists for albums and songs they have released annually, I think it will take at least 5 years for them to publish an all-time list.

That Kid Cudi album is from 2009, not 2019. That's RS's error, and it's kind of an embarrassing one.

And I’m VERY happy at how much hip-hop there is in the top fifty, versus the one (1) rap album in the entire top 100 last time around (Nation of Millions).

As latin American, my first impression was "No Buena Vista Social Club!!!" but I'm glad for Shakira and Selena.

Rosalia? A little bit overrated..

If Daddy Yankee and Bad Bunny are considered, the first one should be Tego Calderon.

My comments..so far.

A few takes on first pass:

– The lack of electronic music is glaring. Nothing from Burial, Aphex Twin, Yellow Magic Orchestra, The Knife, The Prodigy, William Basinski, Boards of Canada; only two Daft Punk (and one is the Disneyfied pastiche of Random Access Memories), only one Kraftwerk album (!) – which shows that even the biggest beasts you might expect were passed over.

Not sure the demographic split of their panel but cursory inclusions of '90s trip-hoppy acts such as Portishead, Massive Attack and DJ Shadow suggests the new voters were a certain type of Gen X whose electronic exposure was always adjacent to the alt canon.

– Some of the biggest Pitchfork-ish acts of the 2000s are also absent, most notably Animal Collective/Panda Bear, but also The Avalanches, Interpol, Modest Mouse et al. Again, feels like a narrowing of what makes the grade. Arcade Fire at #500 is a magnificent troll, I will give them that.

– A few of the eye-catching pick (Harry Styles, The Weeknd, Bad Bunny) are over-compensations for this current poptimist moment and/or weighted voting for the celebrity contributors. No two ways about it.

– The inclusion of hip-hop and R&B albums into the upper reaches is a great sight, even considering the above gripes. Seeing OutKast, Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, the Wu, Nas et al that high felt inevitable when the next major all-time list came around, and here we have it.

– Kid A, Kendrick and Kanye outranking Sgt Pepper's is a thrill to behold.

Oh! And: I would have put big money on The Who being the great losers from the classic rock canon, but it is in fact U2 who tumble from grace. A fascinating sub-narrative.

As I noted in another post, RS got the date wrong for the Kid Cudi album - it's actually from 2009, not 2019.

There are three 2019 albums, though, and your point still holds true. Presumably the "two logical choices" are Lana and Billie; the "and also" would be Harry Styles's Fine Line. (Or the "and Peggy," if you prefer, and by the way where IS Hamilton here?)

Hi guys! First time posting. But this list made want to get out of my cave.

Boy! What a mess! A lot of recent albums that I doubt will stand the test of time bumping out classics. I usually overlook the ranking and just look at what’s included (that is why I like the consensus that AM presents) but this is weirdly annoying. Nobody with a straight face can say that “If You're Reading This It's Too Late” is one of the best albums in history. And Red in the top 100? (Probably her best but…really? top 100?) And I’m happy to see the love for Kendrick, Frank and Kanye but I think they went a little bit overboard with their rankings.

But beyond that, one thing worries me and I bet I’m not the first to notice.
Look! Between RS’s and NME’s top 100 they share almost half of the same entries.

2. The Beatles - Revolver (1966)
3. David Bowie - Hunky Dory (1972)
5. The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico (1966)
9. The Beatles - The Beatles (1968)
11. Nirvana - Nevermind (1991)
12. Patti Smith - Horses (1975)
17. Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back (1988)
18. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless (1991)
20. Radiohead - OK Computer (1997)
21. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010)
23. David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972)
24. The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main St. Street (1972)
25. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On (1971)
26. The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds (1966)
28. Amy Winehouse - Back To Black (2006)
30. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993)
34. The Beatles - Abbey Road (1969)
36. Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks (1975)
38. Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks... Here's The Sex Pistols (1977)
39. The Clash - London Calling (1979)
42. Stevie Wonder - Innervisions (1973)
43. The Beatles - Rubber Soul (1965)
48. Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love (1985)
50. Dusty Springfield - Dusty In Memphis (1969)
51. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (1977)
52. The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed (1969)
53. David Bowie - Station To Station (1976)
54. Talking Heads - Remain In Light (1980)
56. Neil Young - After The Gold Rush (1970)
62. Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde (1966)
63. Joni Mitchell - Blue (1971)
64. Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
65. REM - Automatic For The People (1992)
68. Van Morrison - Astral Weeks (1968)
71. Neil Young - Harvest (1972)
73. Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home (1965)
74. Nas - IIImatic (1994)
79. Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue (1959)
82. Carole King - Tapestry (1971)
83. The Band - The Band (1969)
85. Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run (1975)
87. The Beatles - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)
89. Lauryn Hill - The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill (1998)
91. Prince And The Revolution - Purple Rain (1984)

All great records (some among my favorites) but nowadays there’s almost nothing special about this publication or that one announcing their list because they are starting to look the same.
Some of their old tendencies remain (you still won’t see the Eagles on NME or Ash on RS) but overall these lists are becoming too similar. See how many entries on P4k’s 80’s list are in here too. 10-15 years ago it would have been unimaginable to see RS, NME and P4k agreeing this much. Everybody is losing what made them special. I’d rather have boomer Rolling Stone, 90’s/00’s loving NME and pretentious/hipster Pitchfork. Everybody defending their own front.

And another thing. I’m from Latin America. I know some people want more international presence but I’m not a fan of the idea. If it’s already kind of absurd to argue that… I don’t know… Astral Weeks is better that The Blueprint, imagine throwing a massive batch of new genres, sounds, sensibilities and sociohistorical background to the mix. It’s going to be a fucking disaster. I’d rather have separate lists by country or genre.
That said, these jokers tried and I hate what they choose. Shakira? Bad Bunny? Daddy Yankee? Selena? That’s it? Just the ones white people would know about? What about Café Tacvba, Soda Stereo, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Charly Garcia, La Maldita Vecindad, Julieta Venegas, Natalia Lafourcade? All of these artists have more diversity of sound in one album that the ones they included in their entire discographies. And if RS is such a fan of compilations, why not add one of classic artists like Celia Cruz or Perez Prado?
It all makes it seem like a trend, and Latin-American music is not one. Reggeaton is! I really doubt that in their next update Daddy Yankee and Bad Bunny will remain.
And if you want to become more international why only restrict yourself to spanish language options. What about other legendary acts like Os Mutantes or Serge Gainsbourg (If you included noted criminal Phil Spector, why not him?)

Whatever! That’s my take.

This is a very good list and I’m blown away. I’m glad that this magazine has moved away from the 60-70s “canon” in order to make way for genres such as Hip Hop and R&B, which have shaped the most trends in popular music for the last forty years. I’m also pleasantly surprised by how gutsy this list is. A year ago I spoke on how Rolling Stone’s music coverage was maturing now that Jann Wenner didn’t have as much of a hold (and rightly so) as he had before on the magazine. And it’s continuing to show.

I have to applaud them for putting To Pimp A Butterfly, It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back and Enter The Wu-Tang in the top thirty. They’re truly deserving of their ranks. While I wish more jazz, electronica, and world music was on the list I have to say it’s very diverse anyways. And of course, the number #1 on this list is very deserving.

I don't have any problem with some cumbia on the list, actually it's historic!!! But definitely it's necesary more classic latin american albums. Ruben Blades, Hector Lavoe, Chavela Vargas, Mercedes Sosa, Inti Illimani, Chabuca Granda, Silvio Rodriguez, etc.

Yeah! I'm surprised that The Who managed to hold up that well (Boo! for keeping Tommy and dropping Quadrophenia). I love them but I also believe their popularity is stalling a little bit (Aside from the hits, their Spotify numbers are unremarkable).

As for U2 (cue sad face) I feel betrayed. I expected at least War to appear alongside The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, which were kicked from the top 100. They didn't drop as hard as others (they are in the top 150) but for such a legendary band that was championed for decades by RS, it feels like a statement. I bet this would look different without the itunes fiasco.

But there are two classic rock acts that were affected more than U2. First, it's The Police. They went from having 3 albums to just 1: Syncronicity. It improved its ranking but again, for such a legendary band it feels short. I would have kept Ghost in the Machine.

But by far and away, the biggest loser from this list was Eric Clapton.
Fresh Cream... gone! Wheels of Fire... gone! Blues Breakers... gone! 461 Ocean Boulevard... gone! Slowhand... gone!
And the two that remained (Disraeli Gears and Layla) took big dives. I love the guy... this is really sad.

Can someone make a list of the biggest drops from the 2012 list.

I guess my takeaway would be to make a definitive Rolling Stone list with all the albums that made the 2003, 2012 and 2020 ones. I think that wouldn't look so bad. In fact I think that would be the best option going into the future. It wouldn't generate as much controversy but maybe instead of replacing, just keep adding, and get rid of the ranking. Just because Kendrick and Rihanna aren't influenced by Clapton that doesn't mean his work isn't worthwile or good on its own.

Anyway, come on Rolling Stone. I know you love classic rockers. I know you're willing to give 5/5 stars to any new album by a classic rocker. So why didn't you give a placement to "Blackstar"? Why???

Looking at some reddit threats on this list has been interesting. Like, I love the Beatles but people are mad that they no longer have 4 albums in the top 10. Or that they don’t have the number one spot (which I think in large part is because at this point, there’s no one consensus choice.) Five albums in the top 50 is pretty damn good! And because there’s no consensus of course that splits the vote.

One criticism I agree with: they just really shouldn’t put jazz on there at all. It’s kind of silly to argue that (as one commentator noted) Drake’s “Take Care” is better than literally all other jazz albums except for Kind of Blue. Just leave jazz out of it, it’s almost disrespectful.

Also, no Sufjan - both Illinois and Carrie and Lowell should be on there. And no Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective, no Turn on the Bright Lights by Interpol or the first xx record...definitely missing a few classic indie records from the last 20 years.

And a few just weird choices on the pop music front. Like, I’m not going to argue with popular newer artists that maybe aren’t my absolute all time faves getting some high spots (like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé having record sin the top 100 - they are huge, iconic, and talented, and even if I wouldn’t have put them in my own list doesn’t mean those artists and records aren’t deserving - not many people are really at that level of pop music mastery these days.)

But still there are a few interesting choices to be canonized so soon. Why is there a Weeknd record that no one really even cared about the year it came out or when the decade just ended on this list? It wasn’t even his big breakthrough? Or the Harry Styles record from last year that got some decently positive reviews, but like, I don’t know, is it as influential as Arcade Fire’s Funeral? And yes obviously the quality is totally subjective but it’s still fun to argue these things 😄

One last thing: some of the inclusions are great but the rankings are a bit crazy to me. Aw well, like I said it’s all totally subjective anyway. I still think that even if I feel like A LOT is missing and there are also a lot of artists and albums that I don’t necessarily, personally, feel “belong” on a canonized list like this it’s still great to compare to their 2003 list and see more inclusion, representation, hip hop being taken much more seriously, a little less baby boomer nostalgia, etc.

Las thought: What’s Going On makes perfect sense at number one. It really is universal to all music lovers, whether it be rock, soul, hip hop, etc.

I don't have SO MANY complaints about the list, but to move Funeral from the top 200 to the last place on the list? Come on, man, that really sucks! It should be the opposite way around!

Also, I think there are some really weird choices about certain artists. Bowie, for example: Blackstar is not on the list, but they moved Station to Station to the top 50, almost. A higher position than Hunky Freaking Dory.

I'd rather have the Acclaimed Music top 500 albums, it's much better. :D

In all honesty this list is ok, I am very glad to see Boyz II Men make this list. I loved them in the 90s and they seem to have faded from a lot of people's memories.

I will give them some credit for having a very surprising list with some of the new positionings. The best surprise reaction I got towards this list was Sade's 'Love Deluxe'.

But despite some of the positives, I found the list pretty uncomfortable with many of the enterings and positions from the albums of the later half of 2010s on an All Time subject. I feel some of them entered the All-Time a bit too soon.

I've heard better deliveries, flows and less corny lines from Azealia Banks than Drake and although 'Lemonade' is quite a strong material, the album's production never screamed "Groundbreaking" enough to be considered a widespread Top 200. The sound of Jonsi's bow guitar roaring with the heavy reverb on 'Agaetis Byrjun' was one example of groundbreaking and even the productions on albums that's didn't make it in Acclaimed Music's Top 3000 like Yoko Ono's 'Fly' and Roisin Murphy's 'Hairless Toys' sounded more riskier and fresher.

In the end, it's not my list. So it's really down to the Rolling Stones.

I knew I was going to hate this list the second I saw Funeral at 500, it's the same nonsense they did to Aquemini last time (which thankfully they've redeemed themselves on), it's just kind of absurd to think that they consider some really questionable albums over Funeral.

Also I had to laugh that they were bragging in the forward about having 86 albums from the 21st Century and then half of those were from pop artists that pretty much everyone agrees did much better work elsewhere (Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Usher, etc.)

BUT, I will have to say that when I got to the Top 200 I found myself nodding my head in approval more often than not. Some of those old records like Born in the USA and The Wall are still really great so I'm glad they're in the top 200 but they seem to finally acknowledge that the last 30 years weren't just latter-day eras for Dylan and Springsteen and that hip-hop has an enormous amount of classic albums that should have been part of the canon years ago.

And honestly, their top 50 actually has a lot of overlap with my top 50 that I'll hopefully be dropping in our poll soon...

I can't really be too mad at this list, I think it's a step in the right direction and a lot of people still read and respect Rolling Stone so hopefully their audience is going to check out some of the albums they don't recognize this time around.

One last thought, I almost closed my browser tab when I saw Red and then Take Care that high, they're okay but I wouldn't even put those in the top 1000 all time...

If you love the classic rock canon, or more recent hip hop/poptimist/neo soul artists - you Will have plenty to complain about in terms of rankings but not necessarily inclusion.

But white indie, metal, and electronic artists of last 20 years and one prominent new jazz voice got totally screwed. Sure they took a few no brainers they couldn’t leave off (Elephant, Sound Of Silver, For Emma, Funeral) and included a few they shouldn’t have (Currents, AM) - But no Sufjan Stevens, Spoon, War On Drugs, Car Seat Headrest, Kamasi The Epic, Courtney Barnett, SK got one in but not The Woods which is top 100 all time in my book, no Grizzly Bear, St. Vincent, Animal Collective, The Xx debut, Built To Spill, Modest Mouse, Nick Freaking Cave (whose had the best after 30 run of any rock or hip hop recording artist ever), The Shins, Fleet Foxes, Tool, Destroyer, New Pornographers, Queens Of The Stone Age, Mountain Goats Sunset Tree, Parquet Courts (I’d take Wide Awake and Light Up Gold over at least a third of that list), Future Islands, Sun Kil Moon’s Benji, Swans, Wolf Parade, The National, The Knife, Four Tet, Black Keys, Elbow, etc etc etc.

Not saying every one of these artists had to have a spot, but they have all produced albums as good or better than some that made the cut.

And am I correct that Smiths didn’t land a single album.

Love all the new hip hop neo-Soul inclusions but Torn a bit on how highly many of them are ranked - just feel where before things weighted too heavily to the white classic canon, In this woke cultural moment The new list has overcompensated a bit in reverse. Not every title Throws me w ranking but Songs all the way to 4, Miseducation at 10, Thriller at 12, Pimp at 19, ready at 21, snooze fest Voodoo at 28 - come on... all, except for Voodoo great albums, but not as great as they are ranked - no complaints about Marvin at 1, Purple Rain in top ten, Nation at 15, Aretha at 11, or Kanye at 17 those all feel in ballpark to me.

Obviously Voodoo is my biggest complaint in top 50, especially ahead of Riot goin on, which it emulates but fails to match every step of the way. Someone please explain the appeal of this album to me - I’ve given it over 15 spins since its release and have never latched on to it in the slightest.

And fav surprise inclusion - Jason Isbell’s Southestern - that really is one of the best singer-songwriter albums of last 10 years but the type of album pitchfork ignores on principal.

Couple other things I loved - The Stooges and Fun House on and Raw Power not - have always found Raw Power the most pedestrian of the band’s three releases but it’s usually their highest vote getter in polls like these.

Led Zep I getting second highest spot for that band.

Most depressing slide - Forever Changes almost out of top 200.

So RS published an awful list AGAIN! They have decided to put some C+ pop and rap albums on their list.So many albums are out of the list and some are criminally low or some are criminally high.Just look at some of the albums from the post-90s,They do not deserve to be called "One of the Greatest of all time".These are some of the albums that i think deserved a spot on the list:

Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm not(The Genre-defining album that is more influential than AM and was more successful)
Absolution/Origin of Symmetry(One of them at least should have made the list,The most Beautiful Guitar Riffs and Solos from the 21st century are made by Muse's second and third album and i believe guitar solo and riff is what rock is all about)
Hybrid Theory(The Best Selling Rock album of the 21st Century and it was also so influential,Now is regarded by some critics as the iconic album)
Teens of Denial and Blurryface(These 2 should not be called "One of the greatest of all time" anytime soon, but when i see some overrated albums from the same decade made the list i think why they didn't make it)

Albums that are low:
Nevermind should have made it through the top 3,I don't think there is an album more important than this.
OK Computer should have been in top 10,It is so important and i think it's kinda disrespect putting it out of the top 10.
The Bends being out of top 100 is a shame.
The Stone Roses is often regarded as one of the top 100 albums ever.
And some more that you know.

Albums that are higher than expected.(Just look at the most of the albums from the post-90s you will realize yourself especially the 2010s)

Overall it is a list with many many problems in order of ranking and album selection.I am not mad because i saw this coming.

I think the iTunes fiasco crystallised what a lot of people were thinking: that U2 assumed their position at the front of pop culture was pre-ordained, that they should always be front of the queue no matter how dull their records or how much further they felt from a youthful zeitgeist.

People were bored enough of Bono pontificating (while avoiding tax), but that really was a tipping point of 'why can't these guys just f_ off'. Now there's a retroactive downgrade afoot. They did it to themselves, really.

I learned long ago to not care about these Rolling Stone lists, but I'm happy to see Blue so high.
