Top 500 Albums Not on Acclaimed Music (RYM/BEA Combined List)

The list below represents the top 500 albums, based on a combination of the all-time lists on Rate Your Music (http://www.rateyourmusic.com) and Best Ever Albums (http://www.besteveralbums.com), that do not appear on Acclaimed Music (either in the all-time top 3000 or as Bubbling Under entries) as of the November 29 site update.

The RYM and BEA lists both contain 10,000 entries; I am using the lists as retrieved from both sites on November 29, the same date the AM update was posted. As you may know, RYM recently updated their charts to the algorithm being used for the site’s eventual (and long, long, LONG-gestating) replacement site Sonemic; site subscribers now have access to the entire 10,000-album all-time list, which has not previously been the case, and I couldn’t resist. (Non-subscribers can see only 5,000 albums, although positions from 5-10K are visible on albums’ individual pages.)

The RYM overall list includes both live and “archival” albums (the latter defined as albums comprised of previously unreleased material dating back at least 10 years) but excludes compilations, which aligns it with AM’s criteria. BEA includes everything, but fortunately their list isn’t swamped with comps (the highest-rated is Bob Marley’s Legend, at #376).

Using a reverse-point system (i.e., the #1 album gets 10,000 points, etc.), I compiled a top 3000 list, of which 1738 are also on the Acclaimed Music top 3000, with a further 464 listed on AM as Bubblers. Below are the top 500 albums of those remaining. (Obviously the two 2020 albums included here are destined for the AM top 3000 in the next update.)

The highest-ranked of these albums on the overall RYM-BEA top 3000 are the two Fishmans albums, which actually finished back-to-back at #134 and #135. In case anyone’s wondering, it isn’t until #2904 that we get to the first album to appear on only one site’s list (the archival 2000 box set The Jimi Hendrix Experience). If anyone’s interested in seeing the full top 3000, I can post it as an attachment.

Very nice list here! I really enjoy the idea behind this list, and it does a great job showing what the sight doesn't show well enough. Some of them (like say, Let It Be... Naked) are ones that the site wouldn't include as a matter of policy, but many more are those from genres and demographics underdiscussed by the critical populace as a whole.

In the interest of completeness, I should note that RYM's album list excludes EP's as well, while both BEA and AM include them. This explains, for example, the absence here of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada (the latter is in BEA's top 1000, and is the #1-ranked EP on RYM).

Also, some of the same gray-area issues exist on all three sites re: "compilation or not?" (You can practically see the same ongoing debate about Hatful of Hollow on all three.)

I second the recommendation of Journey In Satchidananda. NPR put it in their list of 150 albums by women, which is how I found out about it, and they wrote a separate essay on it

It's a crime The mollusk is not in the top 500. I'm guessing a lot of people have not heard it. It deserves to be in the top 100. Not since the White Album has their been such an album of musical diversity.
